In the literary work If You Eat, You Never Die, the author, Tony Romano, intertwines several short stories into a unified family history that is simply captivating. The collection of stories is centered around an Italian-American family, who are growing up in Chicago during the 1950′s. Romano takes the time to develop the characters through the experiences and interactions with one another. The writing style is very informal and captures the characters individuality very well. Furthermore, to make this series of stories even more interesting and practical, Mr. Romano undoubtedly draws from his own experiences as an Italian to formulate the wonderful fictional Italian family that is featured in If You Eat, You Never Die. The chapter I chose is titled after the name of the book If You Eat, You Never Die and is from the view of Lucia or Mama. This chapter is set inside the Comingo’s kitchen and is a conversation between Jimmy’s wrestling coach, Jimmy, and Mama. Jimmy the previous night had been forced to eat dinner even though he was very close to being overweight for his weight class in wrestling. The next day Jimmy failed to make weight and his coach demanded an explanation. When Jimmy explained that his mother made him eat Jimmy’s coach decided to have a talk with Jimmy’s mother about the matter. What makes this chapter stand out to me is the cultural differences that are magnified by this exchange. On one side you have Jimmy’s coach who sees it to be perfectly acceptable to not eat and cut weight for a sport and on the other side Mama who sees not eating to be almost blasphemy. In this single chapter Mr. Romano shows the reader how truly difficult things can be for first generation immigrants as they try and juggle the American customs and those of their parents and their country. Mr. Romano also writes in way to show phonetically Mama’s broken English as seen in the excerpt between the coach and Mama. “When Jim works at practice, he’s got to have at least a chance later to use what he learns.
