The novel Girl Last Seen was written by Nina Laurin. The story within the novel takes place in a small town right outside of Seattle, Washington over the span of about a month. Drugs are easily accessible and violence is common in this little town. The main character is Ella Santos. However, at one point in her life, she changed her name to Lainey Moreno. She is a young African American woman in her mid 20s. The only way that she is able to get through life is the pills that she takes. Throughout the novel, Laine would have dreams of what it was like when she was hidden away from everyone. Although she did not remember very many details, she always remembered how she felt when she was there. The scars on her wrists and ankles also allow her to remember how she was treated during that time. There was also a full chapter of the time right before she was kidnapped. It was a conversation between Laine and her mother. Her mother was about to be put into jail and Laine was going to become a ward of the state. It was a thrilling story to follow and it left me guessing until the end. The only thing I did not like was how all of the exciting material did not happen until the very end. The realization of who the kidnapper was the last thing to happen and nothing else happened after that. I also enjoyed how the story was written. The author’s way of writing was easy to read. I would read multiple chapters at a time because I never found a good place to stop. I recommend this book to others. It is a great mystery story and is very interesting. Others also believe the same thing. For example, Heather Gudenkauf, a New York Times bestselling author called the novel, “A heart-stopping thriller that had me guessing to the very end.” I rate Girl Last Seen a 8.5 out of
