The Best Four Wheelchair Vans We Have Seen In 2013 It is hard to live with a disability, because everyday things become a challenge. A U.S. Census Bureau report from 2008 states that 3.3 million non-institutionalized Americans over age 15 use wheelchairs. The reason why there are so many people with disabilities is that the U.S. spent decades at war. This is why the mobility industry is rethinking the products it provides to support a growing demographic. Vantage Mobility International (VMI) and Braun Ability are two leading industry players that spent decades converting wheelchair vans from companies such as Chrysler, Toyota, and Honda into wheelchair-accessible modes of transportation.
For many Millennials, a number of their childhood memories are likely to include a popular form of entertainment during the late 1990s and early 2000s: Disney Channel Original Movies. Thus it is with a sense of nostalgia that one such individual could elicit a connection between one of those movies, LeVar Burton’s Smart House, and Ray Bradbury’s short story “The Veldt.” Labeled as science fiction, both of these works share the common theme of a dependence on technology as illustrated by the lives of the Hadley and Cooper families. In particular, these cautionary tales convey to the audience that too many advancements can sever the relationship between parent and child, foster a lack of responsibility, and establish a new, irreversible way
The clinical setting can be terrifying for a nursing student. Nursing students are not only concerned about properly caring for patients, but they have just as much concern regarding the techniques of how to properly address patients and their families in a manner which conveys the care and concern they wish to possess when they become registered nurses. Certainly, heightened levels of anxiety may inhibit a student nurse’s ability to make sound judgment calls with regard to appropriate nursing interventions (Foley, 2016).

On November 4, 1970 in Los Angeles, California Genie’s condition was brought to attention by a social worker. The worker discovered the 13-year old girl in a small, dimly lit, confined bedroom. An investigation by authorities exposed that the child had spent most of her life in this room and typically was tied to a potty chair. Genie was found in diapers because she was not potty trained. Her case is an example of extreme isolation from human contact, society, sunlight, and any other environments besides her room. The deprivation of attachment showed when she was timid to humans, almost afraid. Someone whose life was a developmental nightmare could not possibly be expected to have the basic trust that the world is trustworthy and predictable. The life she lived was incredibly horrifying as morals, and psychology portray just how severe the consequences were on Genie.

When Genie was found, she was thirteen years old, and was presumed to have been in her home since she was around the age of two. She had either been strapped to a child’s toilet, or tied to her bed with complete immobilization during this time, also never being shown any speech—never truly giving her a language to speak. It was discovered, that Genie’s father seemed to be the reason she was locked away (Newton). Although Genie was born through a C-Section, she had little to no problems at birth. She was born a normal healthy little girl. Her medical records all showed that she was growing at a normal rate. Doctor reports are stating that around about a year, Genie was alert and able to sit by herself, but was falling behind in her weight category. Researchers later discovered this may have been the beginning of the malnutrition. There was a problem that was later discovered, requiring Genie to wear a brace on her leg, slowing down the time she learned to walk. Psychologists believe it was this instance that led Genie’s father to believe she was mentally challenged. It is also shown that because of these thoughts, Genie’s father felt it was necessary to hide Genie from the public—whether because of embarrassment or protection. Most researchers will speculate that Genie’s father was a...
Social structures involve different levels that each recognize the importance of establishing “stable patterns of relationships” in order to strengthen our ties to the outer world. In the film, we learn Genie did not have a connection to her family nor any association with

The number one questions the surrounds the case of Genie Wiley is whether she was born mentally retarded or was this a result of her ten years in isolation from birth? This question can receive two different answers based on how you choose to perceive the nature or the nurture of another person. Genie did have the capacity to grow, just as Victor did in a similar study years ago in France. Once their isolation was removed, they began to civilize, which leads myself to believe that nurture took more part in the development in Genies behavior rather than a genetic disorder that her father seemed to believe she had.
Genie’s abuse and social isolation was mainly a result of her father’s decision and justification that Genie was severely mentally retarded and believed hiding her from the world was the best option for everyone (Curtiss, 1988). The only visual stimuli that Genie could interact with were her potty chair, crib, carpet, and plain empty walls. Genie’s severe neglect and abuse in her childhood ultimately lead her t...

Watching The Secret of The Wild Child, I felt an enormous amount of sympathy for Genie. The thing I found most disturbing was the fact that she was tethered to a potty, she could have caught a wide range of disease from it. What I found most interesting about the documentary was how her rehabilitation team allowed her experiment to fall through. I believe that Genie could have benefited more if the experiment
All the various experiments were most likely overwhelming and stressful for Genie, and could have been the major reason why she was never able to learn how to make sentences. I believe Genie was never really loved since she was always transferred to different foster homes. I also believe that if Genie stayed in one foster home, she could have been less overwhelmed and more capable of learning how to speak. Genie’s mother also viewed the experimentations on Genie as unethical and eventually sued children’s hospital for doing scientific research rather than providing therapy to rehabilitate her. Genie’s mother won the case, and further experimentations on Genie were no longer allowed. When experimentations were over, Genie went to her first foster home. At her fist foster home, she was intensely punished for vomiting. The experience of her getting punished was so traumatizing, that Genie needed to go back to Children 's
