Caleb’s Crossing and Lose Your Mother are two different stories that take place at different points in history but have many of the same issues. Both books deal with the oppression and differences Natives in the New World and African Americas apart of the transatlantic slave trade face when it comes to outsiders trying to understand their cultural ways. In Caleb’s Crossing Bethia makes an effort to build relationships with the Natives around the Massachusetts Bay Colony leading her to her friendship with Caleb, her success of acceptance but the failure of equality. Similarly in Lose Your Mother Saidiya goes to great efforts to understand her African history by traveling to Ghana, she finds success in the new perspective she gets but failure …show more content…
Women were expected to stay at home and take care of the house. When Bethia’s mother dies she is expected to take of her siblings and put her educational aspirations on hold. Caleb may be a Native but even he is allowed to pursue a higher education simply due to the fact that he is male. Their friendship is also never allowed to become anything more than a friendship. Bethia’s father arranges her marriage for her, she does not actual end up going through with it but during this time arranged marriages were extremely common. Her efforts include traveling to Ghana and immersing herself in everything offered to her to learn about the slave history there. Saidiya talked to native Ghanaians young and old, toured castles, met with tribes and heard the old tales of the slave trade. Saidiya wanted to understand what led people to the slave trade and where their families were now. She was not necessarily in search of her own specific family’s lineage but that of all Africans who were put into the transatlantic slave trade. Women were auctioned off as “merchandise” to the best suitor they could get in town. Beauty, though important, was not as important as the dowry the woman possessed, because it was the dowry the family provided that could exalt a man’s societal status to all new heights. Once married, women were expected to have son’s for their husbands in order to take over the family business. A barren woman was not an option and could have easily been rushed to the nearest convent to take her vows of a nun, for no honor could be brought otherwise. No woman could run from the societal and legal pressures placed upon them. Throughout Part I of Caleb’s Crossing,by Geraldine Brooks, children are viewed, and treated, entirely different by Puritan society as opposed to that of the Wampanoag. This can be clearly seen because Bethia is the daughter of an important, and devout, Puritan figure while Caleb is the son of the leader of the Wampanoag. Caleb is raised in traditional Wampanoag fashion, allowed to run around and remain unchecked while adults labor at agriculture and other chores. The Wampanoag philosophy on children can be most accurately portrayed by the quote, “... they say that since adult life is full of hardship, childhood should be free of it" (44). This

This source provided the unique perspective of what was thought to be the perfect household, with a man who worked and a wife who cooked and cleaned. However, it also showed how a woman could also do what a man can do, and in some cases they could do it even better. This work is appropriate to use in this essay because it shows how men talked down to their wives as if they were children. This work shows the gradual progression of woman equality and how a woman is able to make her own decisions without her husband’s input.
Slavery is a term that can create a whirlwind of emotions for everyone. During the hardships faced by the African Americans, hundreds of accounts were documented. Harriet Jacobs, Charles Ball and Kate Drumgoold each shared their perspectives of being caught up in the world of slavery. There were reoccurring themes throughout the books as well as varying angles that each author either left out or never experienced. Taking two women’s views as well as a man’s, we can begin to delve deeper into what their everyday lives would have been like. Charles Ball’s Fifty Years in Chains and Harriet Jacobs Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl were both published in the early 1860’s while Kate Drumgoold’s A Slave Girl’s Story came almost forty years later
In all, Tademy does a great job in transporting her readers back to the 1800s in rural Louisiana. This book is a profound alternative to just another slave narrative. Instead of history it offers ‘herstory’. This story offers insight to the issues of slavery through a women’s perspective, something that not so many books offer. Not only does it give readers just one account or perspective of slavery but it gives readers a take on slavery through generation after generation. From the early days of slavery through the Civil War, a narrative of familial strength, pride, and culture are captured in these lines.
Laurence Hill’s novel, The Book of Negroes, uses first-person narrator to depict the whole life ofAminata Diallo, beginning with Bayo, a small village in West Africa, abducting from her family at eleven years old. She witnessed the death of her parents with her own eyes when she was stolen. She was then sent to America and began her slave life. She went through a lot: she lost her children and was informed that her husband was dead. At last she gained freedom again and became an abolitionist against the slave trade. This book uses slave narrative as its genre to present a powerful woman’s life.She was a slave, yes, but she was also an abolitionist. She always held hope in the heart, she resist her dehumanization.
“Deborah Sampson, the daughter of a poor Massachusetts farmer, disguised herself as a man and in 1782, at age twenty-one, enlisted in the Continental army. Ultimately, her commanding officer discovered her secret but kept it to himself, and she was honorably discharged at the end of the war.” She was one of the few women who fought in the Revolution. This example pictured the figure of women fighting alongside men. This encouraged the expansion of wife’s opportunities. Deborah, after the Revolution along with other known female figures, reinforced the ideology of Republican Motherhood which saw the marriage as a “voluntary union held together by affection and mutual dependency rather than male authority.” (Foner, p. 190). This ideal of “companionate” marriage changed the structure of the whole family itself, the now called Modern Family in which workers, laborers and domestic servants are now not considered member of the family anymore. However even if women thought that after the war they would have been seen from the society in a different way it never happened. After reading the slavery accounts of Olaudah Equiano 's "The Life of Olaudah Equiano" and Harriet Jacobs ' "Incidents In the Life of a Slave Girl", you gain knowledge of what slaves endured during their times of slavery. To build their audience aware of what life of a slave was like, both authors gives their interpretation from two different perspectives and by two different eras of slavery.
Naba and Ayodele’s stories were similar to many other people. It truly shows the wretchedness of slavery and the negative effects that it has. Unfortunately, the abolition of slavery does not happen for a long time and this sort of mistreatment of human beings continues for years to come.
Throughout history, it is not uncommon for stories to become silenced; especially, when such a story is being told by the voice of a slave's. Slaves were not granted the same equal rights as the free men. They also were not seen as whole individuals -- worth less than the average citizen, to be sold and traded as property. Abina Mansha was a female slave whom once lived in Asante but came to live in the British Gold Coast Colony during 1876, after being sold to Guamin Eddoo by her husband, Yawawhah. As Abina claims in her testimony, her purchase was no accident. "Slavery had been abolished throughout the British Empire, a law extended into the Gold Coast in 1874. Yet ironically, the demand for laborers on the growing palm oil plantations and in the houses of those who own them means that the trade in slaves into the Gold Coast does not dry up following the war" (Getz and Clark, 2011, p. 6). Abina And The Important Men: A Graphic History written by Trevor R. Getz and Liz Clarke, but spoken in different perspectives, helps shed light on Abina's personal lifestyle; while the date and location provides us with further insight on how the world reacted to 19th century Western culture.
The story of Abina began on the Gold Coast of West Africa in 1876. She was enslaved in her youth and later was sold to Quamina Eddoo. He was an “important” man who had palm oil plantations. During that time, Britain established the Gold Coast Colony and Protectorate in the west part of the Asante Empire. In Britain, slavery was abolished. So, the same rules spread through the British colonies as well. However, slavery still existed in the British Gold Coast Colony and Protectorate. So, Abina decided to run away to Cape Coast in order to become free. She came to James Davis, another “important” man. He was an interpreter for the colonial courts, who desired to help her as much as he could. He helped her to bring her case to the court. Another “important” man was a judge, William Melton. Although he did not want slave owners to become angry with him, he agreed to review her case.
As the years dragged on in the new nation the roles of men and women became more distinct and further apart for one another. Women were not allowed to go anywhere in public without an escort, they could not hold a position in office let allow vote, and they could only learn the basics of education (reading, writing, and arithmetic). In law the children belonged to the husband and so did the wife’s property and money. The only job women could think about having was being a ‘governess’ which would give other women education.
Women were not seen as equal to men in English colonies, and were solely expected to tend to the family and home. When settlers arrived in Virginia, men outnumbered women nearly five to one. In an attempt to maximize their profits, The Virginia Company had women sent to Virginia in order to install families within the colonies. The company believed that “the plantation can never flourish until families be planted and the respect of wives and children fix the people on the soil.” (p.26 line 14) In their letter to the settlers of Virginia, the company clearly objectifies women with statements like, “There hath been especial care had in the choice of them” (p.24 line 17) and “...though we are desirous that marriage be free according to the law of nature, yet would we not have these maids deceived and married to servants.” (p. 26 line 21). The Virginia Company’s shipment of women into the colony along with their letter to the settlers indicates how dismissive women were seen during England’s colonial
To understand the significant change in the role of the women is to understand its roots. Traditionally, women in colonial America were limited in the roles they played or limited in their "spheres of influence." Women were once seen as only needed to bear children and care for them. Their only role was domestic; related to activities such as cooking and cleaning. A married woman shared her husband's status and often lived with his family. The woman was denied any legal control over her possession, land, money, or even her own children after a divorce. In a sense, she was the possession of her husband after marriage. She "... was a legal incompetent, as children, idiots, and criminals were under English law. As feme covert she was stripped of all property; once married, the clothes on her back, her personal possessions--whether valuable, mutable or merely sentimental--and even her body became her husband's, to direct, to manage, and to use. Once a child was born to the couple, her land, too, came under his control." (Berkin 14)
