Michael Jackson was given the title, the “King of Pop”, for very good reason; he captured audiences with his catchy lyrics, amazing dance moves, and dazzling outfits. His legacy has lived beyond the grave, as his music is played on the radio, his concert movie, This Is It, was released after his death, and people are still moonwalking and doing the Thriller dance. Michael inspired, and was adored by many, but his music did much more than just entertain. He sang about racial and social injustices and broke down the musical barriers of his time.

His song Black or White, is still very prevalent in today’s society, it was written in 1991, just years after segregation became outlawed. Even though blacks and whites were equal legally, there continued to be social tension between African Americans and white people. The song, Black or White, represents the push to bring social equality to the forefront of America by highlighting the social injustices associated with racism. Michael Jackson was black and experienced the tension firsthand between the two races. Jackson sings about how he wouldn’t care if his girl, (“baby,”) were black or white. Michael Jackson uses music to carry out his message and leaves his audience reflecting on their own actions in their life. He embraced the negative comments about his appearance, by making it a statement about equality and acceptance, and he tried not to let the molestation charges or ruined marriages affect his life. In the end, drugs won the battle with his life, but that’s not the way we remember him. His legacy lives through his songs, music videos, and movies, which tell the story of the good he was trying to bring into the world. He brought the issues of racism and inequality out into the open for people to discuss, and he paved the way for pop artists to freely express themselves, especially through creative music videos and elaborate concerts, and freedom in lyrics.
