Bates Motel, a television show based off of the original movie Psycho, follows the events of a serial killer in his childhood and his inevitable path to the infamous satanic creation of Norman Bates. This prequel offers something very different in the world of television, developing an awkward relationship between a mother and her son. However, the actions portrayed by Norma and Norman Bates, played by Freddie Highmore and Vera Farmiga, develop into a deeper meaning of motherhood and the impossible expectations placed upon it. The small town in which they live judge them for their unsociable ways and place burdens upon their way of life, ultimately forming their outcast from society and Norma’s ignorance of properly caring for Norman. This type of bond can be clearly seen in Bates Motel through the relationship of Norma and Norman, though exaggerated, their relationship is more a sexual relationship then anything. Displayed within the show, true taboo love coexists between the two, and the image of single motherhood is to blame the awkward bond between both of them. The audience gets a taste of this right from the beginning, in season one episode two of the show, Norma changes her blouse right in front of her son as awkwardly wants to look but does not, with her telling him that she is his mom so it is not abnormal. These scenes are what captivate the untold truth of the relationship that the audience seems to put past them due to the awkwardness of it. Through the sexuality, it can be seen how Norma has little clue on how to properly raise and treat her kids by herself, within the journal MILFS and Matrons: Images and Realities of Mothers’ Sexuality, Beth Montemurro writes, “There seems to be a notion that once a woman has children she is first and foremost an example, and must be responsible and conservative in a culturally specific way” (367). Once a mother, the women’s image changes as she now becomes a role model for their kids and therefore is expected to act the part. Within Bates Motel, Norma feels these needs to be a proper mother, but not in the correct way. She undoubtedly blocks almost every girl out of Norman’s social life, overly protects Norman, and gives no other attempts of parenting to her other son, Dylan. Thus demonstrating a vivid example of how through their sexual tension, Norman is unable to properly care for her children, she desperately attempts to be the good girl, or in this case the good mother, on television and set limits on Norman, but not the limits one would expect from a mom. Psycho is a suspense-horror film written by Joseph Stefano and directed by Alfred Hitchcock. This film was loosely adapted from Robert Bloch’s 1959 suspense novel, Psycho. A majority of the movie was filmed in 1960 at Universal Studios in Los Angeles. Psycho is about Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), a secretary from Arizona who steals $40,000 from her employer’s client. She takes that money and drives off to California to meet her lover Sam Loomis (John Gavin) in order to start a new life. After a long drive, she pulls off the main highway and ends up taking refuge at an isolated motel owned and managed by a deranged Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins). In Alfred Hitchcock’s film, Psycho, symbols, character and point of view are three literary aspects used in the film to manipulate the audience’s emotions and to build suspense in the film.
In this documentary by The National Geographic, The New World: Nightmare in Jamestown captures what it must have been like for the settlers of Jamestown. In the clip shown, the main protagonist talks about how she killed the killer but he is shown alive. The movie is not concerned with the logic; otherwise, the killer would have at least been slowed down by the injuries he sustained. Siskel and Ebert laud the movie on its set up of scenes, score, character development, and use of lighting to make the audience feel the terror the characters undergo.

Ken Kesey's award-winning novel, "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest", was adapted into a film in 1975 written and directed by New York City native Bo Goldman and Czech director Milos Forman. Towards the end of the novel and film, Chief Bromden escapes from the ward. This scene is conveyed differently in the novel and film; however, there are evident similarities between each form of media. This scene is important to the plot because it wraps up the entire storyline. In the film and novel, similarities within Chief Bromden’s escape from the ward include the way Chief escaped, how he couldn't hear anyone in the ward due to being deaf, and how McMurphy assisted Bromden with gaining his confidence to lift the panel and throw it through the window. McMurphy essentially changed Bromden to help him break out of the asylum and back into the real world.

In meeting his first, and only, customer for the night, Norman becomes edgy and nervous and constantly tries to engage Marion in conversation. Knowing fully well that his mother would disapprove of such interactions, Norman becomes protective, obsessive and deranged at the mention of his sick mother. Norman’s sickness combined with his obvious paranoia of people coming around him and his “mother” only leads to him committing several murders all being blamed on his mother. This sickness that each character suffers from can only leads to a greater downfall; obvious insanity.
Norman’s mind housed two personalities, his and his mother’s. After his father had died, Norman and his mother had lived “as if there was no one else in the world.” A few years later, Norman’s mother met a man that she planned to marry. Driven with jealousy, Norman murdered both the man and his mother because he had felt replaced. The guilt ate him up and caused him to pretend that his mother was still alive. In order to do this, half of him became his mother. Just as Norman was jealous of any man who came near his mother, the mother half of Norman was also jealous of anyone that aroused Norman himself. Therefore, when Marion came to stay at the Bates Motel, owned by Norman, he was attracted to her, and his attraction spurred the mother half of him to become jealous and murder Marion. Sometimes Norman would dress up as his mother when reality came too close and threatened his illusion. Since his mind was housing two personalities, there was a battle, and eventually his mother won and completely took over Norman. Norman was gone, and his mother has fully taken over (Psycho). The viewers realize that Norman Bates never meant to hurt anyone. It was his jealous emotions stemming from his mother that caused him to murder Marion. Inspired by the life of the demented, cannibalistic Wisconsin killer Ed Gein (whose heinous acts would also inspire THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, 1974 and DERANGED, 1974), PSYCHO is probably Hitchcock's most gruesome and dark film. Its importance to its genre cannot be overestimated. The character of Norman Bates deviated from the book's original character, a forty year old pervert, to Anthony Perkins' character 'a tender vulnerable young man' one could almost feel sorry for.
