Architecture: Antoni Gaudi is one of the most respected architects to this day. His architecture is unique and is very distinct. It has been recognized and admired by many architects around the world. His type of architecture wasn’t so much as influenced by other works as it was by nature. His work consists of organic designs using naturally curved construction stones. His most prized piece of work would have to be the Sagrada Familia, which is still in construction to this day. Since the church is so big, it is usually referred to as a “cathedral”, even though it lacks the Bishop’s seat. Art: Joan Miró was born in the year of 1893 in Barcelona. Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dalí I Domenech was born May 11, 1904 in the small town agricultural town of Figueres, Spain. The son of a prosperous notary, Dalí spent his boyhood in Figueres and at the family's summer home in the coastal fishing village of Cadaques where his parents built his first studio. As an adult, he made his home with his wife Gala in nearby Port Lligat. Many of his paintings reflect his love of this area of Spain. As an artist, Salvador Dalí was not limited to a particular style or media. The body of his work, from early impressionist paintings through his transitional surrealist works, and into his classical period, reveals a constantly growing and evolving artist. (http://www.daliweb.org/bio.html) Dalí worked in all media, leaving behind a wealth of oils, watercolors, drawings, graphics, and sculptures, jewels and objects of all descriptions.
Surrealism in the 1920s was defined as a fantastic arrangement of materials that influenced Miró, due to the fact that he was one of the most original and sympathetic artists during the Surrealism periods. Miró was born into the Catalan culture in April 20,1893 in Barcelona, Spain (Munro 288). Having to be born into the Catalan culture gave Miró an opportunity to have an intense nationalist activity. In which much attention was paid not only to political expressions of the need for autonomy, but also to the re-Catalanizing of every day life (Higdon 1).
In Florence, Italy a cathedral stands over the grave of its architect, Filippo Brunelleschi. The Cathedral of Florence that now serves as his monument was one of his largest architectural developments. Little is known about Filippo’s childhood because he was not very famous; however, later in life he made huge accomplishments in the field of architecture. Filippo Brunelleschi’s structures were considered glorious at the time and are still standing today.
The art nouveau style evolved throughout Europe and many artists adopted and conformed to the organic style presented. Two stand out artists for me, that I have always had an interest in, are Antonio Gaudi and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Both are regarded as art nouveau artists however they both have very different styles in my eye. In comparison, their lives have many similarities, with early life influencing the artists they became, and the legacy they both leave behind. In this essay I am going to compare their lives, styles, influences and legacies.
...m nature, then the best way to honor God is to design buildings based on his work. Even though George Orwell called the church "one of the most hideous buildings in the world." I would disagree because; Antonio Gaudí being at the height of modern art shows us that the key element of his work is derived from the simplicity and the beauty of nature. After observing his work, each and every one of buildings clearly shows his chain of thought. I really am fascinated by his work, but fascinated by his imagination more. As to how he combines to what he sees and feels into his buildings, making it such a surrealist compositions. It is interesting because to the world architecture means straight lights, straight buildings, but Gaudi completely revolutionized the world of architecture for me. In conclusion I would say Gaudi was a visionary and one of the geniuses of our time.
The Chinese-American architect Ieoh Ming Pei (I.M) is known as one of the greatest architects of the Twentieth Century. His long, brilliant career was highlighted by several internationally famous structures. While many of Pei’s buildings were generally accepted by the public, some of them precipitated fair amounts of controversy. The most notable of these controversial structures is his Glass Pyramid at the entrance of the Louvre in Paris. For these reasons, I.M. Pei seems to be an architect who exhibits interest in the avant-garde through both the creative design and aestheticism of his architecture.
“ Portraiture, like other forms of art, is an expression of conviction, and in the
Le Corbusier is one of the most significant architects from the 20th century. He is known as one of the pioneers of modern architecture due to many of his ideas and ‘recipes’ within architecture. One of his most famous was ‘The Five Point of a New Architecture’ that he had explained in ‘L'Esprit Nouveau’ and the book ‘Vers une architecture’, which he had been developing throughout the 1920s. Le Corbusier’ development of this idea altered the architectural promenade in a new way, which was presented in 1926. The five points are as follows: pilotis, the roof garden, free plan, free façade, and the horizontal window. Le Corbusier used these points as a structural basis for most of his architecture up until the 1950’s, which are evident in many of his designs.
Antoni Gaudi was a very unique, Barcelonian architect. His designs are recognized around the world as symbols of the city. Some say that no architect has shaped a city as much as Gaudi has shaped Barcelona. The strange and beautiful, undulating structures such as the Casa Mila are distinct to the city. His designs are colorful, vivid, alive, almost. He was also incredibly religious and his work shows a very spiritual beauty that not many have been able to achieve. More than that Antoni Gaudi was ahead of his time in the way he took his inspiration from nature. Everything in his work somehow calls back to the natural world. The turrets of the Sagrada Familia, spiraling upwards like shells, the facade of Casa Batllo, shaped like bones, the park Guell, featuring treelike columns. He had an appreciation and reverence of nature that we are just beginning to feel today. Of course there have always been the organic and nature inspired artists, but everywhere you look you can see the effects of the industrial revolution and the unconscious attempts to eradicate nature.
The architectural theory ‘'Deconstructivism’ has been suggesting new approach to architecture. Contemporary architecture has the most pluralistic condition in history which essentially treats such a theory. The Design of Deconstruction in architecture has become difficult to define because of its free and various ways of thinking. Even though there are many negative viewpoints on Deconstructivism in architecture nowadays, not only the fact that it has the same way of thinking with the new movements in contemporary culture, philosophy and arts, but also its potential provides the value as an architectural study material. By looking into Jacques Derrida’s theory of Deconstruction and analysis on the design that is based on the ‘Deconstructive
The reason for this piece is to attempt a comparison between two architectural examples that employ classical design from different stylistic eras of architectural history. The two styles I've chosen to discuss are the Renaissance and Baroque periods. An understanding of classical architecture needs to be made, as it is the fundamental style of any period that developed architecturally
With the interaction between the development of computational approaches in architecture and the contemporary forms of spatial design intelligence, some new architectural design theories emerged to make differences between architects and control designing processes. These theories are almost employed in all designing realms, from architecture to urban design to provide fields of ideas and solutions that privilege by complexity. Most of these theories are oriented to relay on understanding and using computational methods to generate exotic and complex geometries. In this respect, three of these theories will discussed and tested against three buildings. The theories are: parametric design, genetic architecture and emergence, which characterize some of the contemporary architectural design approaches.
Architecture began to develop with human life. This development is the impact of the environment is inevitable. Different geographical conditions, climate properties are some of them .In addition different cultures, thoughts, reqyests, expectations, life style are social effects. These differences in line with consist of original thinking in architecture. These thoughts are lead up to formation of architectural movements in over time. Some of these movements are Baroque,Impressionism,Modernism and Art Nauveau.’’Baroque architectureis the building style of the Baroque area, begun in late 16th-century Italy that took the Roman vocabularyof Renaissance architecture and used it in a new rhetorical and theatrical fashion, often to express the triumph of thr Catholic Church and absolutist state.’’(1)’’Modern architecture is generally characterized by simplifacition of form and absence of applied decoration.’’(2)This is a comparable in terms of both the movement emergence periods, materials used and appearance.
I think the problem with contemporary architecture is that it is superficial and it lacks depth and meaning. I feel that most architects today design more for the edgy factor and care more about designing aesthetically pleasing buildings instead of for the comfort and needs of people. Certain designs lack growth and the ability to survive throughout the years. I also feel that some designs are absent in their connection to culture, nature and context and when these connections are absent the building we are designing is essentially just another shell.
