“The Angel in the House” During the Victorian Era in 1837 the period that was ruled by Queen Victoria I, women endured many social disadvantages by living in a world entirely dominated by men. Around that time most women had to be innocent, virtuous, dutiful and be ignorant of intellectual opinion. It was also a time associated with prudishness and repression. Their sole window on the world would, of course, be her husband. During this important era, the idea of the “Angel in the House” was developed by Coventry Patmore and used to describe the ideal women who men longed. Throughout this period, women were treated inferior to men and were destined to be the husbands “Angel in the House”. The poem Coventry Patmore is written from the husband’s point of view; Patmore even praises women throughout the poem. His praise for women only relates to his Many novels and love movies are usually about women who are lost in life and need a man to make them feel alive and guide them to fulfilling their own dreams. Sometimes being in a relationship with a man does not necessarily mean that one will strive and become successful because of him. We have come a long way from Victorian times. Many young wives stay home, if they can, for the first years of a child’s life and then later re-join the workforce. Even though women during this Victorian era were slow in becoming literate, they have come a long way in time and are currently being represented in different careers such as the government, literature and academic professionals. The reading The Indifferent Women by Charlotte Anna Perkins mentions the importance of promoting progressing in the world and how women should excel in maintaining their inner happiness. They should help to ascertain their nation remains at peace and contribute to make the world a better place for all of men; women and
