Ronald Takaki, an Asian American academic, historian, and author, recounts the history of America through the voices of people of color in the United States in his book on the truth behind America’s racial history, entitled, A Different Mirror: A History of Multicultural America. He also believes it is vital that we must view these accounts of history from the perspective of people of color, in order to stay true to America’s history. In his own words, by taking into account “events from the viewpoints of different groups, a multicultural curriculum” emerges, which “enables us to reach toward a more comprehensive understanding of American history” (Takaki 4). In A Different Mirror, Takaki starts his narrative with a reinterpretation of “the English cultural appropriation of America” (Takaki 1). To Takaki, the colonization of America by white Europeans, the arrival in America of South-West African slaves, and the displacement of America’s indigenous peoples signified the complex “beginning of multicultural America” (Takaki 1). His exact point of view concerning this issue is one of personal experience. To demonstrate the fault in a modern view of Americanism for his reader, Takaki describes a situation at the beginning of his book that displays a white American point of view he has dealt with for most of his life. The question posed to him by his taxi driver is demonstrative of the constant questioning of Takaki’s racial identity that he has received all throughout his life. He reiterates this struggle throughout his writing, using it as a means of support for the claim that “in the creation of our national identity, ‘American’ has been defined as ‘white’” (Takaki 2). Takaki has realized that to a white American or perhaps mainstream media, he does not fit the narrow stereotype of American-ness or even look “American” (Takaki 1). What is most perplexing about this assumption is that Takaki is very American, as he reassured the taxi driver before. Yet because his upbringing is rooted in multiculturalism, his racial identity is consistently doubted. In an interview with a psychology professor by the name of J.Q. Adams, Takaki recounts his past, “I was born in Hawaii. I grew up in Palolo Valley, on the island of Oahu, and my neighbors were Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Hawaiian. We were a multiracial, multicultural community. I can remember going into my neighbors’ homes and hearing Portuguese and Hawaiian and Chinese, and I thought, ‘Oh, this is America’” (Adams and Welsch 227). To examine a modern perspective of prejudice and racism, Wayson Choy’s “I’m a Banana and Proud of it” and Drew Hayden Taylor’s “Pretty Like a White Boy: The Adventures of a Blue-Eye Ojibway” both address the issues of prejudice and racism; however, the authors extend each others thoughts about the issues because of their different definitions, perspectives, experiences and realities.

Internal conflict caused by culture is a concept that Edward Hall explores in his book “Beyond Culture”. In this examination of intercultural interactions, Hall argues that people are born into the cultural prison of one’s primary culture. He then goes on to claim that from people can only be free of this prison and experiencing being lost in another (Hall). For Coates, this cultural prison is the permeating fear resulting from the blackness of his body. His internal conflict is therefore created when seeing the world of white, suburban culture. Because this world of pot-roasts and ice cream Sundays seems impossibly distant from the world of fear for his black body, Coates comes to feel the contrast of cultures. He tells his son, “I knew my portion of the American galaxy, where bodies were enslaved by tenacious gravity, was black and that the other, liberated portion was not” (21). As a result of the shocking divide, Coates comprehends the burden of his race. Coates therefore feels “a cosmic injustice, a profound cruelty, which infused an biding, irrepressible desire to unshackle my body and achieve the velocity of escape (21). The quality of life between the culture belonging to Coates’s skin in contrast to the culture of suburban America creates for Coates a sense of otherness between himself and the rest of the world. The Statue of Liberty is an American icon because it symbolizes freedom, success, and the power of this nation. This image is what the U.S stands for to the outside world. Foreigners strive to move to America because of its wealth and acceptance towards all races and ethnicity. “How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents” recounts the story of how Carlos Garcia, Laura Garcia, and their four girls move from the Dominican Republic to the United States to escape a dictatorship, and establish a new life in flourishing New York City. Many unexpected culture shocks await them in their new country. Although the girls find it difficult to adapt at first, they soon begin to assimilate and Americanize. On the other hand, “The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl” by Elizabeth Wong illustrates the life of an Asian American having to embrace two entirely different cultural identities. Both the Garcia family and Elizabeth Wong's family have to deal with two opposing cultures without losing too much of their heritage. The book and the essay are similar in that characters in each story lose much of their original tradition. However, they are different in that the families move to the states for distinctive reasons, and the cultural preference of “The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl” is more evident than that of “How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents”.
The American Narrative includes a number of incidents throughout American history, which have shaped the nation into what it is today. One of the significant issues that emerged was slavery, and the consequent emancipation of the slaves, which brought much confusion regarding the identification of these new citizens and whether they fit into the American Narrative as it stood. In The Souls of Black Folk, W.E.B Dubois introduces the concept of double consciousness as “the sense of always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others” (Dubois 3). This later became the standard for describing the African-American narrative because of the racial identification spectrum it formed. The question of double consciousness is whether African-Americans can identify themselves as American, or whether the African designation separates them from the rest of society. President Barack Obama and Booker T. Washington, who both emerged as prominent figures representing great social change and progress for the African-American race in America, further illustrate the struggle for an identity.
The United States is a racialized society, with racism deeply embedded into its history. The most renowned display of racism in the United States is the enslavement of Africans by white people. This is one of the many instances that highlights the government’s implementation of institutional racism, which has been experienced by people of many different races. While I was reading chapter five of A Different Mirror by Ronald Takaki, I was struck with an epiphany. There was a specific quote that stuck out the me the most at the beginning of chapter. “Victims of discrimination, segregation, and violence, northern African Americans encountered a powerful cluster of negative racial images. These stereotypes contributed to the conditions of racial degradation and poverty, which in turn, reinforced prejudice.” (Takaki, ).
Tayo faced a struggle of recognizing his essence: the true definition of himself outside and most especially inside. Being a half Native American and half-Caucasian in an environment of a Native American tribe in Laguna, he was constantly reminded of being an outcast. Externally, whenever he would try to fit in any of his race, both sides would reject him with ridicules. As Emo stated against Tayo, “There he is. He thinks he’s something all right. Because he’s part white. Don’t you, half-breed?” It presented hatred from a full-blooded Native American because, “the only reason for this hate was that Tayo was part white.” In fact the shame of being a “half-breed” continued down to his relatives. Auntie’s, “shame for what his mother (Tayo’s) had done, and Auntie’s shame for him (Tayo),” was surprising even though she was one of the closest blood relative of Tayo.
