Different people develop differently socially. There are those with a shyer disposition and others with a very sociable personality. The purpose of this paper is to analyze characteristics of a socially competent adolescent and how some of those characteristics emerge in preschool age children.
Summary of Social Competence
Emotional Regulation. Emotional self-regulation is how well an individual manages and internalizes their emotions. This is a characteristic of a socially competent adolescent because in our society there are certain emotional display rules, or standards on “when, where, and how it is appropriate to express emotions” (Berk, 2013, p. 412). An example of this would be an individual keeping their temper and reacting calmly when they find out their friend broke their bike. It takes a certain level of self-control to maintain emotional regulation, and that is a skill that socially competent people possess.
Perspective Taking. Perspective taking is the ability to infer what others may be feeling and to recognize a difference between their views (Berk, year, page #). A socially competent adolescent possess a strong sense of their inner self and can see the perspective of others becoming more aware of the feelings and viewpoints in others. An example of this would be an adolescent listening to a peer’s idea for a school project and, although it may be different from the adolescent’s idea, they consider their peer’s idea and possibly even use it. When an individual is socially competent at perspective taking, they are able to see that outside of their own sphere of thought and contemplate other’s ideas, opening their mind to all the possibilities.

...thon and Ariana (see Appendix). In reference to Piaget’s preoperational stage, perspective taking is difficult for young children because they tend to be egocentric (Berk, 2013, p.244). As Dr. Nelson described social problem solving, he explains that socially incompetent children will not be able to recognize and interpret social cues (Nelson, Fall 2013). These skills can be learned, but it can take some time for children to gain those skills. A realistic expectation for parents to have is that their children should be competent in complying with the rules and expectations of the classroom, household, and other public places. Jadie and Ariana are in the preschool and they both displayed a high level of social competence in compliance. Children are also beginning to develop, though they may not be socially competent in, delay of gratification and prosocial behavior.
Seeing things in other people perspective is crucial to keep a serene relationship between people. For instance, failure to consider another person’s point of view is one of the main causes of prejudice in the world. Prejudiced people judge preconceive opinions that are not based on reason or actual experience. According to Jean Piaget’s stages of cognitive development, children go through four stages of development which are sensory motor, pre-operational, concrete- operational, and formal operations. The second stage, which is pre-operational is the age where preschool age students who are between the ages of two and a half to four years old start to develop a sense of self. Children are reacting to the authority of persons in their lives. The teacher acts in a firm but friendly manner to reinforce limits, raise conscious levels, and teach alternative behaviours. I have noticed a child in a childcare, showed mistaken behaviour as a result of dominant character. Despite her small size, she has rapidly become one of the leaders. She plays with just about all of toys, and she has a constant need to be in control of other. She occasionally gets in to arguments, with her peers when they no longer accept her leadership. She has difficulty resolving these conflicts and frequently has a tantrum when she is unable to have her own way. Then I made them sit quietly and I asked her whether she likes it when her friend feels sad. He says "no." I continue to guide him through discovering a solution by asking questions until we reach one that works. The kind gesture makes her feel happy and stopped her argument with peers. Together we find a solution that builds her awareness and how to solve peer conflicts, giving him tools to build positive relationships in the future. Lev Vygotsky and Jean Piaget are the two most influential developmental psychologists in history so one might think they would have very similar theories but this could not be more wrong. Piaget (1896-1980) Piaget 's theory stems from the idea that children develop in mostly solitary and are unable to see others perspective and progress through four stages of development(book). A major challenge to Piaget’s theory is Lev Vygotsky’s (1896-1934) sociohoristic theory which suggests that children acquire the tools of thinking and learning through social interacrtion with family and peers (seans book). Both of these psychologists’ theories are very similar in a number of ways but have a few crucial differences which separate them. (BOOK)
For Vygotsky, children are seen as active beings on their development through social interactions with parents, teachers, and other adults, as well as by participating in their cultural activities. The interactions they have with other individuals and their culture opens their minds to new information and helps develop skills not previously attained. To further understand cognitive development in Piaget and Vygotsky’s theory, we must first look at the processes involved.

“In middle childhood, 30% of a child’s social interactions involve peers, compared to 10% in early childhood” (Blume, 2010). Children place a large importance on friendship more when they grow older. In early childhood, friendships are associated with a particular activity. During middle childhood, children focus more on bonds and trust when it comes to making friends. Children start to use selective association meaning that children start to pair off with people that have the same interests as them. Sociable kids are attracted to other sociable kids and children who are shy tend to get left behind.
It discusses how children are born with that needs to connect with individuals around them. Teachers and providers create positive relationship with children from birth through the early years. The foundation for that healthy social and emotional development because it affects her children see the world, express themselves, manages their emotions, in establishing a positive relationship with others. There were several areas of development that included social interactions that focus on the relationship that we share and include relationship with adults and peers. Emotional awareness recognized and understands your feelings and actions of other people, and self-regulation where you have that ability to express your thoughts, feelings, and behavior in a socially appropriate way. There were many tips that were listed when working with infants from talking and reading, having that warm, responsive, and consistent care, maintaining predictable routines, and getting to know each child while following their lead. The importance of supporting children and developing social skills is critical for learning, happiness, and long-term. This development begins during infancy and can be supported through simple social games, emotional role model, and imitating an infant's facial expression and sounds. The importance of social-emotional development and toddlers makes an impact in a child life when these skills are developed starting in infancy. Encouraging positive behaviors and using positive discipline practices that helped to develop the ability to make good choices as well as recognizing the confidence that is built when these behaviors are repeated. Over the last couple of months I have had the opportunity to student teach at Crim Elementary School. During the few months that I was there, I was placed in a preschool classroom. I was able to learn a lot of different techniques and strategies that I will be able to use in my future classroom. Every student has a different personality so I was excited to get into the classroom and observe how to help each student. For this paper, we were asked to choose three different theories. I will also give them examples of how things can be positive and negative at the same time, and then ask them to come up with their own examples (promote self-evaluation). To add, I will also assess their family background and received parenting style if possible, and see if it influences they way children’s temperament (Hockenberry, 2014b). On the other hand, according to Kohlberg’s theory of moral development, grade 5 students are at level 2 (Conventional stage) , and they are experiencing good boy/nice girl orientation and having law and order morality. They make decisions based on what actions will please others, especially authority figures (teachers & popular peers) and they are often concerned about maintaining relationships through sharing, trust, and loyalty. They also take other people 's perspectives and intentions into account when making decisions. In addition, they know rules are necessary for keeping society running smoothly and believe it is their "duty" to obey them. However, they perceive rules to be inflexible (rules do not change as the society change) (McDevitt, & Ormrod, 2010). According to Piaget’s theory of moral development, grade 5 children have autonomous morality, and they becomes aware that rules and laws are created by people; in judging an action, one should consider actor’s intentions as well as consequences. His theories have greatly impacted the way society views and observes children’s behaviors to their environment.
