“An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” is separated into three sections which incorporates shifts in time for more suspense. The story is told in third person. The time starts in the present, actual time, when a man dressed in civilian clothes is about to be hanged off the bridge. When he is hanged he imagines he could scape death by swimming in the river below him. Than to let us know why he is being hanged and some background of his life, it flashes to the pass. In this section is where we discover the name of the man being executed (Payton Farquhar). The third section jumps back to the present where Payton falls through the bridge and loses consciousness and appears
