We spend six years of our lives in sleep and many of us do not think about what occurs while asleep. Everyone has experienced more than a few dreams while asleep, that is because, whether you know it or not, everyone dreams while asleep. Based off the Activation Information Mode Model theory, dreams are random neurological firings that have no particular meaning. The reason dreams feel so real and personal is because they are based from recent memories located in the brainstem. Although dreams are meaningless, our brain tries to make connections. Through the Activation Information Mode model people are able to analysis personal dreams.
Dream Theory
In 1977, American psychiatrist and dream researchers, Allan Hobson and Robert McCarley, developed the activation information mode model (AIM). The purpose of this model is to relate the brain to the mind and the conscience. The model shows the differences in neurological activity during Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep and waking. The model uses activation, an input source, and modulation, to map where your dreams derived from. Activation is measured by brain activity, the input source from made from internal and external imagery, and modulation is the neuron firing. People that support the AIM theory believe that dreams are neurological messages that stem from recent memories. The lower brain holds memories with remembered emotions and the upper brain synthesize the recent experiences into dreams. This theory is valid because it uses the brain activity and scientific observations to find what stage of sleep you are in and where your dreams originated.

Conclusion
All of dreams have all been composed of recent memories and experiences I had during the past days. Although dreams may seem like they are important and personal to us it only seems that way because they are composed of recent memories and emotions felt. Other than that, dreams are meaningless. The AIM model is a way to relate dreams in REM to when we are conscience. From doing this analysis I learned that although we may want dreams to mean something they are just neurological firings that stem from recent experiences. This model is a good way to determine how your brain makes connections between wakefulness and sleep.
An Athletic Trainer working at the high school level gets to enjoy a variety of sports and with different sports comes different injuries. With football, the injuries an Athletic Trainer has to tend to are often more on the severe end of the scale. It is not uncommon to see a concussion (see Figure 2) or a torn ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament in the knee) in a football game compared to a softball game where a concussion or an ACL tear (see Figure 1) is less likely to occur. While many of the theories agree that dreams are a representation of ideas and thoughts from the unconscious mind, no single theory has been formed as the single primary authority on the matter of dreams despite more support for some of the theories. The fact of the matter is that despite the rampant research and discourse on the concept behind dreaming, these theories are merely speculations. But these speculations feed the curiosity on dreams and will hopefully lead to the expansion of dream analysis to not only better develop the current understanding of dreams, but also to help people around the world by possibly expanding dream analysis to become an early identifier of mental illness.
Over recent years, the field of kinesiology has broken out in popularity. A particular career that has grown in popularity is athletic training. Not to be confused with personal trainers, athletic trainers help athletes prevent, diagnose injuries, as well as provide emergency and first aid care to injured athletes (Athletic Training). Athletic trainers work in multiple settings, working with athletes of many different skill levels and ages. Some common settings you will find athletic trainers include high schools, colleges, professional sports teams, health clinics, and the military (Job Settings). Athletic trainers have a basic duty: they apply protective equipment to protect or prevent an injury. They also provide first aid care, such as tape, bandages, etc. Athletic trainers carry out a rehabilitation program for injured athletes. Rehabilitation is the process of getting healed. “Athletic trainers provide medical services to all types and ages of patients, they don't have to just be athletes.” (“Athletic Training”).

After the research, I learned that while most dreams are fairly coherent, patterned, which include everyday settings, people, activities, and events, they may involve relatively unusual and perhaps bizarre aspects. Altogether, these images would allow people to have the most revealing and distinctive view of who they are and what they know in daily life by telling stories in the brain. However, while I still feel that no theory can exactly interpret what dreams’ meanings really are, it is interesting to know more how human brain’s activity (dreaming) function when people sleep. Moreover, I have decided to see my dreams as a television show with different episodes at night. That way, I will be able to enjoy the dream without ruining the fun that my brain offers because I would love to see what and how my brain wants me to see.
First, let examined the definition of dream according to Sigmund Freud “dream is the disguised fulfilment of a repressed wish. Dreams are constructed like a neurotic symptom: they are compromises between the demands of a repressed impulse and the resistance of a censoring force in the ego” (Freud, 28). This simple means that all dreams represent the fulfilment of a wish by the dreamer. Dreams are the mind way of keeping an individual asleep and to digest and work out all that we have going on inside our brains, the negative, positive, fear and unclear thoughts and actions. This set the framework for dream work. Freud also stresses that even anxiety dreams and nightmares are expressions of unconscious desire. Freud further went on to say that, “the general function of dreaming is to fending off, by a kind of soothing action, external or internal stimuli which would tend to arose the sleeper, and thus of securing sleep against interpretation” (Freud, 28). With this, it shows that a dreamer can take apart his dream and analysis it, if he or she remembers, once conscious.
Despite the large amount of time we spend asleep, surprisingly little is actually known about sleeping and dreaming. Much has been imagined, however. Over history, sleep has been conceived as the space of the soul, as a state of absence akin to death, as a virtual or alternate reality, and more recently, as a form of (sub)consciousness in which memories are built and erased. The significance attributed to dreams has varied widely as well. The Ancient Greeks had surprise dream encounters with their gods. Native Americans turned to their dreams for guidance in life. Shamans dreamed in order to gather information from the spirits.
Dreams are series of thoughts, images, and sensations occurring in a person’s mind during sleep. Dreams occur during a certain stage of sleep known as REM. Several different psychologists, including Freud and Hobson, have studied dreams. Psychologists have provided many theories as to what dreams are and the meanings behind them.
The Psychodynamic view of dreaming suggests that the content in our dream is symbolic of something. Also, that the content in our dreams are based on unconscious desires as well as internal conflict.
Dreaming is very different than everyday life, yet somehow still relates to it in some way. In everyday life we have stress and happiness along with many other emotions. Yet in someway when we drift off into a deep sleep this emotions come right back. Dalai Lama once said that “sleep is the best meditation.” Sleep may be the one thing that people turn to, a place where your mind is totally set free to do what it wants and think what it wants. An idea or vision that is created in your imagination that when suddenly when you awake, feels so real.Dream reflect reality because most peoples dreams are in fact related to past, and recent experiences, or events that have happened in a person’s life. Dreams are more than just a method of entertainment, They should be taken more seriously because of the fact that with dreams imitating own reality, you can then learn more about yourself.
What is a dream? Why do we have dreams? Do dreams have deeper meaning in our lives? The answers to these questions have eluded and intrigued many psychologists throughout history and have sparked my interest as well. As an avid and vivid dreamer I have often found myself wondering what the true meanings to my dreams were. So what are dreams? “Strictly speaking, dreams are images and imagery, thoughts, sounds and voices, and subjective sensations experienced when we sleep.”1 Even after thousands of years of research, psychologists have still not come to an agreed answer on why we dream. There are as many opinions out there as there are individual dreams. Some psychologists believe dreaming is simply the minds way of distracting itself from outside information during sleep to allow people to get deep rest. Others such as Dr. Eric Hartman suggest dreams serve almost as a psychotherapy in which the brain can make connections between different emotions and thoughts in a safe protected environment. Do dreams have any direct correlation to everyday events and experiences? Are they meant to aid individuals in understanding and interpreting their world around them?
