Clearly, Anakaren possesses a sense of righteousness and reluctance to be amenable to other’s opinions and ideas, in her world everyone is wrong except for her. Whether it is an unpretentious routine of how a task should be performed, or controversial topics such as gay marriage, her judgment is always the precise one. Furthermore, how can one forget the countless times she came home ranting about an argument that she had come upon with one of her peers? One argument after the other, her claim was always identical “it’s not my fault he or she does not know how to think suitably”. Undeniably, such quality can be beneficial in certain situations, yet one would not want to imagine such sharp quality that can wind up provoking arguments, or even destroying vital relationships, one can only hope that Anakaren will learn to utilize this “secret weapon” when necessary. As said by Personality and Spirituality, “stubbornness is a basic character flaw or personality defect, one of seven possible chief features adopted in adolescence to protect the self at the level of false personality”, with this said, there is evidently an opportunity for Anakaren to outgrow this prevalent flaw of her person (Personality and

A child’s upbringing can severely affect who they are later in life. In particular, their transition into adulthood and the way they are initiated into this new stage of their lives is essential to their adult personalities. In “The Demoness Kali”, Shyam Selvadurai writes a story in which formal features of initiation are placed upon its main character, Shivan to demonstrate his coming of age. In addition, dedication is a recurring value held by the girl throughout the text. “Every night after school, the girl trained in the swimming squad”, “Be an engine.” She is portrayed as greatly desiring and as a result exceedingly determined. Similarly, ambition is a prominent value obtained by the girl. “Be an engine…don’t think, breathe!” and “Pushing out, she knew that as soon as she was old enough she would leave her mother.” She is portrayed as immensely focused. Therefore, many values and attitudes are explored in this text, such as determination, anger, aspiration, desperation and evil, all of which are represented by the colour red.

Some people think that if they could only change one aspect of their lives, it would be perfect. They do not realize that anything that is changed could come with unintended consequences. “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs and “The Third Wish” by Joan Aiken both illustrate this theme. They demonstrate this by granting the main character three wishes, but with each wish that is granted, brings undesirable consequences. The main idea of this essay is to compare and contrast “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Third Wish.” Although the “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Third Wish” are both fantasies and have similar themes, they have different main characters, wishes, and resolutions.
Adolescence. The point in life where the world´s biggest problems begin. Two authors Jean Davies Okimoto of “My Favorite Chaperone” and Alma Luz Villanueva of “Golden Glass” written a narrative about two adolescents who experiences the situations of the world. In the story “Two Kinds”, the author, Amy Tan, intends to make reader think of the meaning behind the story. She doesn’t speak out as an analyzer to illustrate what is the real problem between her and her mother. Instead, she uses her own point of view as a narrator to state what she has experienced and what she feels in her mind all along the story. She has not judged what is right or wrong based on her opinion. Instead of giving instruction of how to solve a family issue, the author chooses to write a narrative diary containing her true feeling toward events during her childhood, which offers reader not only a clear account, but insight on how the narrator feels frustrated due to failing her mother’s expectations which leads to a large conflict between the narrator and her mother.
All in all, courage and bravery is an important aspect in life that every human needs to get through hardships. In order to support my theme, “courage and bravery must be gained in order to grow”; I used three literary elements, imagery, tone and motif to prove that courage and bravery must be gained no matter how young or old you are. In our world today, people must have these aspects in order to go further in life, such as taking on new opportunities, especially as high school students. No matter how hard things get in life we must continue to grow and learn by building courage and
Throughout the short story, one sees the internal issues that Akiko faces as she goes further into motherhood. At the beginning of the story Hatsuko, Akiko’s daughter, reveals how she knew of the dislike that her mother had on her during her childhood and adolescence. In the letter that Hatsuko wrote to her mother questioning her, why “she disliked her” (1). Akiko then responds to herself by saying that “her feeling[s] about her daughter [are not] abnormal” (2) which is an example of how she is denying the societal roles. Entered in the role of a mother Akiko longs to escape out of the role as seen as her constant rejection of her daughter. Akiko though cannot leave the role of a mother to become her own person once more due to the Confucius influences that govern her life.
The persuasive attempts in both literary works produce different results. The effectiveness of the mother’s guidance to her daughter is questioned since the girl cannot recognize the essence of her mother’s lesson. Despite that, the mother’s beneficial instruction serves as a standard for the daughter to reflect her future behaviors in order to live up to the community’s expectations. On the other hand, Anne’s value of candid expression and lasting relationship dissuades her from obliging to her family’s meaningless duty to place her love and interest above to experience fulfillment in life.
