Intro:
Anthem is set in a post-apocalyptic world where society has drawn into its shell and created armor around each citizen that keeps them safe but also restricts all movement. The armor is extremely intricate, extending even into the intellectual world where it binds and crushes an aptitude for cunning, any potential for proficiency, and capacity for effectiveness to an almost non-existent size. Equality 7-2521 is the main character who struggles to break free from the mold that society has pressed everyone into. His highly intellectual mindset, revolutionary discoveries, and his fierce love for one human being, equip him with the weapons to break free from society and escape to his freedom.

He is so awed by its power and usefulness that he begins to think that not everything he is doing is wrong and the government might not be correct about everything. “The Council of Scholars has said that we know all the things which exist and therefore the things which are not known by all do not exist. But we think that the Council of Scholars is blind” (Rand 52). The values which we prize so greatly in our American culture, uniqueness, individuality, and love for another above all others were gone in Anthem’s society. This produced a melancholy and monotonous culture without feelings that suppressed anyone who was different. While they were all safe from harm they were also walled off from everything that makes us unique and special human beings. Equality 7-2521 is able to regain those qualities through a long, difficult, and complicated process. A society must absolutely contain those qualities to thrive and as long as those qualities remain in the world, no-one will be required to go through a journey like Equality
Equality 7-2521 is rebellious. If a person is rebellious, he shows a desire to resist authority. This authority is most commonly a government that runs its territory in a way which the rebellious person does not support. Rebellious people argue for changing or replacing this authority because they often view it as corrupt or ineffective. Due to their desire for change, these people are often the most dangerous to governments that wish to retain power and control. Equality 7-2521 shows this desire to defy authority in Anthem. However, Equality eventually, tries to distant himself from his society. He is shaped to be a follower, but eventually emerges in to an individual and a leader. On his journey, he discovers the past remains of his community. Ayn Rand uses Equality's discoveries of self to represent the importance of individuality in a functional society.

Ayn Rand’s Anthem is a politically satirical novel set in a future society that is so highly collectivized that the word “I” has been banned. The world is governed by various councils who believe that man’s sole reason for existence is to enforce the Great Truth “that all men are one and that there is no will save the will of all men together” (Rand, 20). Any indication of an individual’s independent spirit is swiftly and brutally put down, with the transgressors being punished with severe prison sentences or even death. Anthem is a novella written by Ayn Rand, in which Equality 7-2521, the protagonist, struggles for self-identification living in a collectivist society. Equality believes that individuality is an eminent aspect of one’s life because individuality defines and outlines who man is. He endures all the hardships in his life living with people who support collectivism, and who reject his ideas. For example, when Equality 7-2521 invents and exhibits the light bulb, the World Council rejects it and tells him that it is selfish to work on something alone instead of working with his brothers. The World Council threatens to destroy the light bulb but Equality does not let that happen and rebels, so he is forced into exile from his society. Equality realizes that he is different from others because he cares about his happiness unlike others who are convinced to believe that a group’s happiness counts more than an individual’s happiness.
People in every Society are placed in categories according to gender, religion, race, and age from which one of these categories includes social class.
