An Analysis Of Symbolism In John Rand's Anthem

Intro:
Anthem is set in a post-apocalyptic world where society has drawn into its shell and created armor around each citizen that keeps them safe but also restricts all movement. The armor is extremely intricate, extending even into the intellectual world where it binds and crushes an aptitude for cunning, any potential for proficiency, and capacity for effectiveness to an almost non-existent size. Equality 7-2521 is the main character who struggles to break free from the mold that society has pressed everyone into. His highly intellectual mindset, revolutionary discoveries, and his fierce love for one human being, equip him with the weapons to break free from society and escape to his freedom.

He is so awed by its power and usefulness that he begins to think that not everything he is doing is wrong and the government might not be correct about everything. “The Council of Scholars has said that we know all the things which exist and therefore the things which are not known by all do not exist. But we think that the Council of Scholars is blind” (Rand 52). As he continues to develop his knowledge of electricity he starts to break free from the mindset that everything done alone is despicable. The values which we prize so greatly in our American culture, uniqueness, individuality, and love for another above all others were gone in Anthem’s society. This produced a melancholy and monotonous culture without feelings that suppressed anyone who was different. While they were all safe from harm they were also walled off from everything that makes us unique and special human beings. Equality 7-2521 is able to regain those qualities through a long, difficult, and complicated process. A society must absolutely contain those qualities to thrive and as long as those qualities remain in the world, no-one will be required to go through a journey like Equality
