For example in the Disney film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, After Snow White finds the little cottage in the woods her immediate reaction is to clean the house for the owners of the house, Snow White says upon arrival “we’ll clean the house and surprise them, then maybe they’ll let me stay” snow white believes that she will get keep if she cooks and cleans because that’s what disney believes women do, Snow White then goes on to say “and if you let me stay i’ll keep house for you, i’ll wash, sew, sweep, cook…” she bargains with the dwarfs to be able to stay in their cottage by cooking and cleaning for them but she is practically becoming their maid.

In the beginning when they first meet: “If you will jeep house for us, and cook, make beds, wash, sew, and knit, and keep everything clean and orderly, then you can stay with us”. Furthermore, this quote shows that in order for the dwarfs to keep Snow White safe she must do the basic “female” jobs such as cooking and cleaning because they are out working and doing “male” jobs. Another gender role is at the end when the heroic male accidently dislodges the piece poison apple from her throat and saves the helpless Snow White by bringing her back to life.
This film, contrarily to its predecessors, scratches the surface of the male protagonists, and introduces men who are humanly flawed and relatable, taking them down from the pedestal they used to be on, and making them equal to the female characters. No matter how much one may despise the Beast for being aggressively temperamental, Gaston for his stupidity and violence, or even Lumière for his objectification of women, these characters have a life and a role of their own, and do not remain two-dimensional like the previous Princes. For example, Belle’s father never suggests that she marries a man and only caringly mentions Gaston as a potential companion and friend for his lonely daughter. Over the years, Snow White’s story has been told in numerous different versions then its original version in 1812 by the Grimm Brothers. The main basis of the story has remained the same. Only a few minor tweaks to the story have changed. The three versions of the story that are going to be analyzed are the original story “Little Snow White” by the Brothers Grimm, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” by Disney, and “Mirror, Mirror” by Disney also. They each were created in very different times and the original story has changed over the years to appeal to the audience of that time. No matter how many versions there are Snow White is considered, one of the most cherished fairy tales of all time. They each use different methods to get their story across by using different colors, word usage, and scenes.

Most people are familiar with the Brothers Grimm version of Rapunzel; however, an earlier variant that comes from Italy was the forerunner to the Grimm version. The Italian version, Petrosinella, written by Giambattista Basile, is an example of how culture has an influence on literature. In Donald Barthelme’s novel Snow White, the main character Snow White contradicts the traits of a stereotypical 1960’s housewife. These traits, given to her by the author, differ from a typical 1960s housewife in appearance, demeanor, and priorities.
