1. The Point and Counterpoint writers both provide bibliographies to support their argument. Most of the sources that they use seem reliable. The Point and Counterpoint author cites several evidence from the same sources. For example, both authors include evidence from Valerie Tripp and David Cesarani. The Point author cited several blogs, which can be unreliable. Though, most of the sources that the point author gives is credible and reputable. The Counterpoint author provides many bibliographies to support his argument and they all seem reliable. The sources that the counterpoint author cites are written from experts in this field. A book like "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas," could be both a good example of using fiction to teach history and a good example of why using fiction to teach history can be dangerous. First, the point author argues that using fiction to teach history is a good example because he claims that it can attract younger readers to learn more about history. The Point author also argues that fables can teach us a moral lesson. In paragraph 3 it states, "Both the novel and movie do just that through their touching and thought-provoking exploration of the moral issues surrounding the Holocaust." The structure the Point author uses is that he first summarizes the story "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas," then he explains and gives evidence supporting his argument. The counterpoint author argues that it is dangerous to uses fiction to teach history and includes that the author of "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas," misrepresents the Holocaust while writing the story. The structure that the Counterpoint author uses is by first giving his claim and then supporting his claims with different bibliographies and explaining it. All in all, a book can be both a good example of using fiction to teach history and a good example of why using fiction to teach history can be dangerous because different people have different opinions of this. Little Girls in Pretty Boxes and The Scarlet Letter. Both authors persuade the reader to feel pain of the stories subject. In Little Girls in Pretty Boxes the author used pathos and interviewing to share the stories of these overly dedicated youth. Joan Ryan wrote to show how these young, talented, sophisticated women can hide the harsh reality of the sport. In her biography she listed the physical problems that these young girls go through. They have eating disorders, stunted growth, weakened bones, depression, low self esteem, debilitating and fatal injuries, and many sacrifice dropping out of school. As students we are taught that in order to have an effective argument, we need a claim, reasoning, and evidence. When comparing, “Two Years Are Better than Four” by Liz Addison, and “Colleges Prepare People for Life” by Freeman Hrabowski it was made obvious that the passage written by Addison had a more effective argument because of the passages claim that was clear to the readers, great reasoning and evidence that backed up her claim.
The last chapter of John Okada’s No-No Boy is an evaluation of Ichiro’s choice that shapes the story. Before the beginning of the novel, Ichiro chooses not to fight the Japanese as an American soldier, and, as a result, he spends two years in jail. Ichiro’s friend, Freddie, was also a “no-no boy” who refused to fight as an American soldier. Freddie also does his jail time. However, at the end of the novel, Freddie makes the decision to go to war in a different context, and he dies (with a strong comparison to Ichiro’s good friend Kenji, who also dies as a result of going to war). As Freddie and Ichiro had made the same choices up until the final scenes of the book, Freddie serves to represent the contrast between Ichiro’s choice (to abstain from fighting) and the decision he could have made (to go to war). Ultimately, Ichiro defends his people and is on his way to becoming fulfilled. The novel ends on an optimistic note as Ichiro feels validated by all of the difficult decisions he had made.
In Chapter 2 of Children’s Books in Children’s Hands: A Brief Introduction to their Literature, the authors talk about the 12 main elements of a literary work: genre, plot, setting, characterization, theme, point of view, intersexuality, tone, mood, style, voice, and the stance of the implied reader (Temple, Martinez, and Yokota 24). All of these literary elements capture the reader’s imagination and creates a successful piece of literature. However, the authors stress the importance of genre in Chapter 2, so I will briefly go over the different types of genres there are in literature and how it affects the readers greatly.
With that, we are able to examine readings and can ask ourselves if this really could have taken place exactly how it is being portrayed. Although the books seem as if they are written as an autobiography or “diary”, they are actually fictional books and should not be used as stand-alone text in a classroom. Even though these books do bring much knowledge to a classroom and allow students to learn about historical events they otherwise may not have, they only provide one insight to the
John Boyne’s book “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas” is set in the area bordering Nazi Germany and Poland in the 1940s. The story concern a young German boy named Bruno, his family and the unlikely friendship he has between another boy named Schmuel, imprisoned in Auschwitz.

Throughout the world, there are many artifacts ranging from Literature, Music, Social Media, Fashion, Toys, Technology, and many other ones. Every single one of these artifacts has a special meaning to them such as, the Statue of Liberty which represents freedom. The National Museum and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum both contain many different types of artifacts that represent our history, as well as sharing a special meaning that can affect a person individually or even shape our society. Children have often been viewed as innocent and innocent may be a nicer way to call children naive. Since children’s lives are so worry free they lack the knowledge of how to transition from being a child to becoming an adolescent. Their lack of knowledge may be a large part of their difficulties growing up, which could be a few rough years for many. In books like the boy in the striped pajamas the story is told from the point of view of a little boy, this way we get a full view of how innocent he is. In this book the writer shows the reader first hand how a child viewed the holocaust and how his innocence cost him his life. Then in books like the perks of being a wallflower Charlie is a teen whom is struggling with the transition from being a child to becoming an adolescent. In this book the writer gives a first hand look at how difficult it can be to transition into an adolescent. Charlie has many difficulties in this book; he is in search of his identity and how to fit in.
Americans were incarcerated during this time for acts of violence. Police officers would brutally beat those in involvement with the movement if they refused to go along with the social norm of the society and so on. Others were perhaps jumped by white men when the blacks came off as being ‘disrespectful” to their way of living. The acts of Civil Rights continued until Jim Crow laws were uplifted.
Throughout history, there have been many noteworthy events that have happened. While there are many sources that can explain these events, historical fiction novels are some of the best ways to do so, as they provide insight on the subject matter, and make you feel connected to the people that have gone through it. An example of a historical fiction that I have just read is The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne, a story about the life of a German boy who becomes friends with a Jewish boy in a concentration camp during the holocaust. The author of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas portrays the historical period well,and uses many details from the real life holocaust to make his story more believable. This book is a classic, and is a very good look on how it feels to be living in Nazi Germany.
Richard Wright was a novelist who wrote about being black in American. He used his writings as a form of advertisement to civilize communism. Being that he was born into slavery he experienced oppression since birth. His first published novel was Uncle Tom’s Children and the book consisted of different short stories of racial oppression in the South such as lynching and the KKK. One of his most defining novels is Black Boy as he wrote about the cultural, political, racial, religion, and social issues of the late 19th century.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas begins with little Bruno playing with his friends, running around around the marketplace acting as if he were an ariplane. From this we have an idea of how much Bruno knows of the war. He acts as if nothing is wrong in his normal life and plays as a normal boy in any other situation would. In later scenes, we see him obliviously act as if he were on a battlefield in a game with his friends just before he moves, which leads us to another topicc. The move. At his new house, he experiences a variety of new situations and he handles them a bit oddly from a German perspective. Firstly, he calls the concentration camp with Shmuel a “farm” and the Jews on it the “the farmers”. The only peculiarity that he can see from this is that they are wearing striped pajamas.

Roald Dahl was a writer of some of the best novels known. Not only was he a writer but he had many other careers such as being a poet, a fighter pilot, and more. Dahl has experienced a lot throughout his life, from school to being in the war. He mainly wrote stories that were intended for children and he was referred to “one of the greatest story tellers for children of the 20th century.” Many of his stories were about real life happenings but he exaggerated them to a great extent in order to make serious situations humorous. This exaggeration added a lot of humour to his stories and this was the main reason why he was such a popular story teller.
