An Acceptable Sacrifice of Praise and Worship Songs in Today’s Church
In this year of our Lord 2002, many issues beset the Church. Christians have always been called to interpret the ways of the world, and to live lives worthy of Jesus Christ, our savior and Lord. One of Christ’s commands was: “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed with the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). Today in America, this commandment is more than usually relevant, with the rise of popular or mass culture, which of necessity affects many Christians. But all Christians are concerned with popular secular culture, whether or not we admit to or are an active part of it. We need to not only decide how to interact with popular culture on the most obvious level, but also what to do with it when it enters into our sacred places and worship services.
Popular music is one of the most pervasive elements of secular mass culture. It is heard literally everywhere, and lately has indeed begun to infiltrate our churches in the name of innovation and inclusivity. Some Christians rejoice, but others lament the accompanying loss of tradition and doctrinal standards. How should Christians react when drum beats enter the sanctuary? Should we allow one Sunday a month to be devoted to the singing of these "praise and worship songs," or would it be better to simply have multiple worship services each week, one devoted to traditional and one to contemporary worship styles? Or should we cling tightly to our organs and gospel hymns, in spite of dwindling attendance? While I dearly love the great traditional hymns, I feel compelled to argue that these more popular choruses, too, are acceptable in God’s eyes.

The church has a problem. The eternally relevant message with which she has been entrusted no longer readily finds a willing ear. According to Henderson, the solution lies in first understanding how our world thinks and then, beginning where people are at, bring them to see "the functional relevance for their lives of the actual relevance of our message". In high school speech classes, we were taught to "know your audience." As a careless high schooler, I didn't really care what she meant, but it eventually made sense (once I actually decided to think about it). You wouldn't use sock puppets to explain math to accountants; you wouldn't use in-depth power-point presentations to explain math to first graders. With this in mind, why do many Americans still try to talk about Jesus using the methods used thirty years ago? Why do we use Christian "jargon" to explain Christianity to those outside the faith? Henderson contends that modern American Christians must change their approach to sharing the faith in order to fit modern America. The pattern of Henderson's book is straightforward: he examines a particular aspect/mindset/value of modern Americans; he then gives ideas about how a Christian might share Words of Eternal Life with such an American. Henderson's writing is both straightforward and enjoyable. He gets right to the heart of the American mindset, then illustrates it with descriptions from scenes from popular movies, personal anecdotes, jokes, etc. In all, Henderson does the modern Christian a great service in writing "Culture Shift." Jesus told Christians to tell others about him ("Go, therefore, and baptize all nations...") and Henderson can help us along the way through this book
Southland Christian Church, one of several worship centers in the United States that has earned the moniker “Six Flags over Jesus,” is Lexington’s largest megachurch. With a weekly attendance of 8,000 people and an operating budget that supports a staff of over eighty members, Southland far exceeds most U.S. congregations in terms of financial resources and social clout. In recent years, popular and scholarly studies have attempted to situate the megachurch movement within a broad cultural context. Although the majority of these analyses dispute the precise definition of a megachurch, most distinguish these multiplex sanctuaries from smaller worship communities by using the same criteria—i.e. weekly attendance, campus acreage, annual budget, etc.—that megachurches themselves draw on to represent their own success. [2] However, the essence of a megachurch is not its large buildings, but rather the theology of consumption that informs its programming.[3] In this way, a megachurch ethos has infiltrated even the smallest congregations in the United States and has helped to solidify Christianity’s inextricable connection to consumer capitalism. To those who see megachurches as symptomatic of a flawed Christianity, market-minded church growth confounds one of the faith’s oldest dualities, the contradiction of living in the world without conforming to its ways, as Paul puts it in Romans 12. Megachurches at once reject “the world” and participate in it by seeking to win the lost and wow the consumer at the same time.
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is one the world’s well-known choir since its one of the prominent and oldest. The choir started out as an insignificant group, but rapidly began to be more popular as the years progressed. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is a chorus of 360 men and women in total. They have entertained millions of spectators by performing in places such as at the “World’s Fairs and expositions at inaugurations of U.S. presidents, in acclaimed concert halls from Australia and Europe to Asia and the Middle East” (Mormon). “In 1929, the Choir began broadcasting Music & The Spoken Word on radio” (Mormon). Now they have various radio and television stations. The Mormon Tabernacle has been broadcasted live all over television and several social media sites. They are also known as “America’s Choir” because people all over the world enjoy their harmonious music. Each member has a distinctive voice and their belief in god, makes this effort to influence others through music. The choir is “an ambassador for ‘The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,” their music surpasses the traditional restrictions, which led to numerous people bonding universally through music. The Choir performs at least two sessions per year, and they also have a demanding calendar which they must follow. The Choir grew successful by the aptitude, commitment and dreams of its leaders. Every single person in the choir and others outside the Choir helped the Choir be cultivated and helped them develop into the enormous Choir that they are today. Gilgamesh ignored many of these kingly duties and was eager to become heroic and godly. "The young men of Uruk he harries without warrant, Gilgamesh lets no son go free to his father. By day and by night his tyranny grows harsher" (George, Tablet I 67-69). The beginning of the epic depicts his kingship as tyrannical and immoral, which could go without question or complaint unless the gods will it. Although considered great for his many feats such as his great walls and military expeditions, his faults could not be questioned by the commoners, which show a flaw in Mesopotamian kingship. Therefore, the gods ask Anu to create a counterpart to Gilgamesh to balance his oppressive reign. "Let him be a match for the storm of his heart, let them vie with each other, so Uruk may be rested!" (Tablet I 97-98). Enkidu, Gilgamesh 's counterpart, was initially created as a wild, uncivilized man rather than a demigod king. His position was to serve as a person that would try to prevent Gilgamesh from becoming so lofty and boastful and to make him become mature and make rational decisions. This becomes evident in Enkidu 's first encounter with Gilgamesh at the wedding: "For the goddess of weddings the bed was laid out, Gilgamesh met with the maiden by night. Forward
In the beginning of the book, Gilgamesh appears to be selfish. Gilgamesh’s “arrogance has no bounds by day or night” (62). Even though he is created by the Gods to be perfect, he misuses his powers and gifts for his own earthly pleasure. He has sexual intercourse with all the virgins of his city even if they are already engaged. Through all Gilgamesh’s imperfections and faults, he learns to change his amoral personality. The friendship of Enkidu helped to change his ways, for only Enkidu, who “is the strongest of wild creatures,” (66) is a match for Gilgamesh. Through this companionship with Enkidu, Gilgamesh starts to realize his incapabilities and need for his friend. When they fight Humbaba, they both give moral support to each other when the other is scared. Another event that changes Gilgamesh’s character is the death of Enkidu. When Enkidu dies, Gilgamesh goes through the suffering of losing a loved one. Gilgamesh experiences a pain, which no worldly pleasure can ease. By this experience Gilgamesh starts to understand his vulnerability toward death and pain. Losing his best friend causes Gilgamesh to be melancholic. At this point Gilgamesh is humbled by the fact that even he could not escape the wrath of death. Gilgamesh goes from this arrogant king to a lonely grieving person with fear of death in his heart.

In an age when culture continues to lower standards of intellect, Marva Dawn makes compelling observations and suggestions for the Church to rethink its’ strategy on impacting society. How do we evangelize without weakening the message of what we are communicating? The majority of her text focuses on the worship environment generally, but later she focuses on music, preaching, and liturgy specifically. According to Dawn, a gathering of believers should emphasize God as the subject and object of worship, challenge each individual to grow in godly character, and accentuate the community of believers (not only in the room, but throughout history as well). Through this grid, she encourages leaders and participants to evaluate each worship element. If these primary goals are accomplished, then worship will not be empty and simpleminded. Instead the worship atmosphere would be held to a higher standard and, she believes, both pleasing to God and attractive to those who do not know God.
The death of his friend Enkidu plays a big role in this transformation. Gilgamesh goes from independent to having companionship, which he had never had, back to being alone again. This grief would incite in him the fear of his own mortality and drive him to press forward for the answer to immortal life. Lynn Malone, is currently the senior pastor at First United Methodist Church in Monroe, Louisiana. On June 13, 2008, Malone gave a homily that entailed a very key component of the Christian faith, the church. In this homily, the main concept of the homily is the church as being one whole entity.
