Amir, the main character and narrator is a wealthy boy in Kabul, Afghanistan, who manipulates his privileged upbringing to benefit his best friend Hassan. In The Kite Runner by Khaled Hossein, the main character Amir's journey evolves from selfish to selfless redemption and reflects the burdened guilt of past treacherous choices towards his friend Hassan. His willingness to put himself in danger, recognizing what was occurring in Afghanistan, demonstrates Amir's development and maturity. Amir regrets how he treated his half-brother and knows that he failed to reciprocate his loyalty. Amir always understood exactly what he needed to do, but his selfish and cowardly nature never let him. Until this point, America was a place for him to forget his past. He is giving up his comfort and well-being for the sake of someone else. By confronting his past, Amir can finally return to that ally and save a part of Hassan. When Amir finally ran back, he was faced with an obstacle. It is one he faced years ago. Just like then, Amir looked at Assef, knowing what he was capable of. The difference this time was that Amir could confront him. “ "All right," I said, not knowing what else there was to say”.In this situation, Amir is courageous and heroic rather than cowardly.
