American Values
Reflection on Equality/Egalitarianism
The value I chose is equality/egalitarianism. I chose this value because it is one that I feel strongly about. I believe that it is inherently good for human societies to adopt an equal and egalitarian mindset because no one should be held back because of something they did not choose like ethnicity, gender, sex, orientation, or even things they choose that fall into the realm of freedom of conscience, like religion or politics.
I think that there are certain human values that might serve a purpose in a time and place. Or, they may serve a purpose to a smaller degree. Being unequal is one of them. I can understand why older cultures that were less stable might prefer established roles and

We see how the U.S. and other countries with equality and egalitarianism were able to raise the standard of living for societies and increase opportunities for the greatest number of people. To be competitive in the modern world, societies need to reinforce equality and egaliarianism to basically continue to get the most out of the greatest number of people and also allow them to achieve fulfilment in doing so. Americans therefore need to continue to celebrate equality and egalitarianism as a way to grow forward using all the unique talents in the country which will create success across the society, but also for the sake of giving each individual the opportunity to achieve his or her own dreams toward life, liberty, and the pursuit of …show more content…
As an American, I am very much about equality and egalitarianism. It is a driving value in my own life because I believe that equality and egalitarianism make for a constructive society because they strip away man-made limitations like social roles or social values. I believe very much that everyone has capacity for greatness, and should seek it.
Yet as a Southeast Asian, my culture is one that holds certain persons, such as parents and elders, in higher esteem than youth, regardless of what is correct or incorrect. There is a strong deference to those with a higher social standard, and they are not only to be minded, but also celebrated. I definitely inhabit both of these values systems depending on my environment. Here, equality is seen as a foreign concept. Rather, persons and groups have different values based on their roles or positions.

America has always seen as the symbolic ideal country of prosperity and equality. This is the reason why people come to America hoping to become successful, but in matter of fact we all have an equal plan field to be successful is not entirely true. For there are social boundaries that keep use limited based upon our own status. Whether we are born of a low class or of a high class the possibility of economic mobility in a sense are predetermined by two factors of social class and success together they both affecting one’s another opportunity of success. In order to achieve success, we must know that it is made up of two main concepts and they are fortune and position.
Whenever an author is creating an argument, they must appeal to whatever grabs his or her selected audience’s attention. When given the topic of Michael Fay, an 18 year old American citizen who was punished in Singapore for vandalism by being caned, two sources appealed to their audience in two contrasting ways. In “Time to Assert American Values,” published by The New York Times, the author tries to capture his or her audience by stirring up emotion. In “Rough Justice: A Caning in Singapore Stirs up a Fierce Debate about Crime and Punishment,” Alejandro Reyes presents factual evidence throughout the entire article to support his claims. After carefully analyzing both texts, it is apparent that Alejandro Reyes gives a more convincing and sufficient
In a world of conformity, Equality managed to find their own individuality, their own
In society, often our perspective of people is shaped by their socioeconomic status. People center their values based upon various other origins, such as money or other material things, as opposed to personality to grasp a more authentic understanding of a person.
“This dream of equality and fairness has never come easily—but it has always been sustained by the belief that in America, change is possible. Today, because of that hope, coupled with the hard and painstaking labor of Americans sung and unsung, we live in a moment when the dream of e...
Democracy stresses the equality of all individuals and insists that all men are created equal. Democracy does not persist on an equality of condition for all people or argue that all persons have a right to an equal share of worldly goods. Rather, its concept of equality insists that all are entitled to equality of opportunity and equality before the law. The democratic concept of equality holds that no person should be held back for any such arbitrary reasons as those based on race, color, religion, or gender. This concept of equality holds that each person must be free to develop himself or herself as fully as he or she can or cares to and that each person should be treated as the equal of all other persons by the law. We have come a great distance toward reaching the goal of equality for all in this country, but however close we are we are still at a considerable distance from a genuine universally recognized and respected equality for all. I will go into more details giving more information and making it clear to understand equality and civil rights for all and it affects everyone.
Great Indian authors have written grand epics that depict heroic characters performing virtuous deeds. Many of these epic tales feature fearsome and godly battles, while others highlight the soft side of human emotions. Despite seemingly unrealistic characters such as talking hawks and ten-headed monsters, and unlikely conflicts that feature bloody battles, many of these grand epics display many traditional values that Americans value in modern society. When construing three particular celebrated Indian epics (“the Mahabharata,” “the Bhagavad-Gita,” and “the Ramayana”), readers would easily glean the values and belief system that Ancient Indian society held in high esteem many thousands of years ago. Moreover, by comparing and contrasting respective ideals and principles, similarities between Ancient Indians and Americans would come to surface.
Every cultures has their own way to define the values. What could be of value in one country could be invaluable in a different country. For example, in Mexico there are places within the same country where the values are measured in different types of ways, such as; in a low-income scenario morality is of great value and in a high-income scenario money and power determine their values of life in a different manor. Everything depends in the social background you are born into that determines how you will live life this term would be called ascribed status” a position an individual either inherits at birth or receives involuntarily later in life”(Henslin, 2015, pg.102).
Equality is something Americans strive to provide and maintain. It has become an integral and necessary part of our mosaic culture. Even now to the point that when people think of America, they naturally think of freedom and equality. People of many different races, disabilities and creeds have come to the United States seeking the impartiality upon which this country was founded. The institutions of this country have relied upon it, just as it was the created by the events in the laying of moral foundations. The expression of America's citizens plays an extremely significant role in the history of equality in American society. In the pursuit of equality and the "American Dream," people have authored inspiring compositions and sermons to express their feelings of what their country should be like and how exemplary it would be were it like that.
Being an Asian girl, I am very attached with my culture, which is somehow similar to the India. Therefore, I believe that a person must try to live his life for others than just living for himself because living life for you is easier than living life for others. I feel we are social being, so we must try to live our life for each other than just thinking about one. On the other hand, I also agree that everyone should have equal right, women should be treated equal as men and a person must have privacy in his/her to some extent.
The history of equality can be traced back many years. Aristotle and Plato, Greek philosophers, had many views on the balance between the free-thinking worth of individuals versus the needs of society to be led by the best and smartest. For Marxists, the backbone of Marxism is equality the root of all inequality is capitalism, providing differences of wealth, wages, living conditions education and housing. A society that i...
To inspire and influence others, a leader must possess many skills and abilities. As motivational speaker Peter Northouse, states, “a leader should be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant” (Northouse, 2013) Moving an entire group of individuals toward a singular goal is a considerable undertaking. Without effective communication skills and a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished, one will feel like they are trying to herd cats rather than leading.
Society still classified each of us in three classes, the upper, middle and lower class, and we distinguished our status class based on prestige, religious affiliation and so on. Even though each individual has a different cultures, background and religious beliefs, we should not look at the person's race, color, age and sex, but we do, for instance, when it comes to jobs. We do pay the men and women totally different wage amounts for the same education background and skills, even though they work in a government, medical field, school environment or within the community. Class background may be a function of class identity, but eating with friends and coworkers is professional and managerial classes are more likely to eat in the homes of friends than those in working class occupations. When it comes to cooking, those with more education and income are more likely to be willing to experiment with new dishes or dishes of their own creation than are those with less income and education.
Perspective has its roots in Latin it comes from the word ‘perspicere’ or translates literally as ‘to see clearly.’
Our understanding of the world is based on the various beliefs we embrace. Many philosophies tend to be culturally specific and shape individuals in a certain way. However, we are all the same deep beneath our skin. Equality is a philosophical view that should be followed so that everyone can have fairness in life. Culture affects equality and dehumanizes individuals by shaping society’s values and moral beliefs.
