Deaf Again is a book written by Mark Drolsbough about his life growing up as a member of the deaf community. He tells stories of the struggles of trying to fit into the hearing world. Drolsbough also details how his hearing family members made him believe as a child that being deaf is bad. He continues on with the story of his life as he finally finds his identity as a Deaf guy, with a capital D. Drolsbough then goes on to fall in love, get married, and help his mother find her proverbial voice in her family.

In this reading, the author discusses their opinion on Deaf Art. During their own experience, they explain the expression and point of view of Deaf artists. As seen in their work, these artists gather their point of views: positive and negative. The author also discusses two of the Deaf artists that have influenced themselves the most. One of these artists is Chuck Baird and the other is Betty G. Miller. Seen on the website, the two pieces created by these artists seem to have significant meanings behind them. Furthermore into the author’s view of Deaf Art, he/she shares the value of Deaf art to this community. Because Sign Language is a visual way of communication, it makes sense that the community creates expressive art without words. This can also be seen in Deaf theater, storytelling, performances, etc. Not only does this art effect the Hearing world, but also strongly impacts the Deaf community.
Acquiring a Language: American Sign Language vs. English In the Unites States and Canada, an estimated range of 500,00 to 2 million people speak/use American Sign Language. According to the Census Bureau, ASL is the leading minority language after Spanish, Italian German and French. ASL is the focal point of Deaf Culture and nothing is dearer to the Deaf people’s hearts because it is a store of cultural knowledge and also a symbol of social identity, and social interactions. It is a fully complete, autonomous and natural language with complex grammar not derived and independent of English.
At Clarke I currently teach in a self contained classroom of four year old children that are deaf and hard of hearing who are learning to listen and speak. I assist under the direction of the classroom teacher in planning, preparing and executing lessons in a listening and spoken language approach. I have the opportunity to record, transcribe and analyze language samples on a daily basis. In addition, I facilitate the child's communication in the classroom and ensure carryover of activities between the classroom and individual speech therapy sessions. Every week I contribute and participate in meetings with the educational team to discuss each child's progress using Cottage Acquisition Scales of Speech, Language and Listening (CASSLLS).

For centuries, people from all walks of life have been using their hands to communicate with one another, and for centuries people from all walks of life have been learning. Today I am following in their footsteps with a passion from God for the deaf language, culture, and souls. For almost a decade, an intense ardor for American Sign Language and a desire to reach its native users for Christ seeded itself in my soul, wove its roots deeper and deeper, and blossomed into one of the greatest loves of my life. American Sign Language is a unique language with a rich history that not only provides a service to people in the deaf culture, but also to hearing people who seek to attain fluency.
How many people do you know that know American Sign Language (ASL)? Sign language provides you with positive interests. You may not think ASL might be important to know, but actually knowing sign language can be ideal for oneself. ASL has been known as another way of communication that can help you improve your daily life. Sign language just means communication “spoken” through body language, gestures, and facial expressions. Sign language leads to a major change in communication. ASL was fully recognized in the 1960’s and became popular. Sign language has many benefits because many people in the U.S. are deaf or hard of hearing, it enriches relationships, and it promotes self-esteem and confidence.
I am currently an art education major, but my dream has always been to work and possibly teach at a deaf school. I was born with a hearing impairment. I was not deaf but I was hard-of-hearing. We did not know about this hearing impairment until I was about four or five years old. I taught myself to read lips, so for the longest time they thought I was just stubborn and hardheaded, but little did they know I just could not hear them. When I was around five years old I went to an audiologist and had ear tube surgery. After that my hearing was 90 percent better. I still struggle every now and then if someone is not facing me when they are talking, but it is much better. Ever since then I have thought sign language and the Deaf community is extremely interesting!
In learning about the deaf culture I have taken on a new understanding about the people it includes. Through readings and the lessons, I have learned that being deaf has both its hardships and its blessings. The beauty of the language alone makes one want to learn all that he or she can about it. In this paper I will discuss the beauty of the language and the misconceptions the hearing world has about deafness.
First and foremost, my dream and career goals have always been centered on being an ally to the Deaf community since I began learning sign language almost a decade ago. My college career has focused on ASL, Deaf culture, the Deaf community and their history. I feel at home and at ease in this space. My goal for this program is to gain new skills as a teacher while continuing to learn from the vibrant Deaf community of America. The use of symbolism has long been a technique by which an author can present far more than the literal meaning of a story. However, symbols are not always easily defined; indeed, it is sometimes possible that one symbol in a story may be endowed with multiple meanings, all of which lead the reader to a greater understanding of the author's message. Such is the case in Jose Donoso's short story "Paseo." The story is told from the point of view of a grown man looking back on the isolated, frightened child he was. As the boy's jealousy focuses on the attention gained by a nondescript but persistent dog, Donoso leads us into the realm of multiple symbolism.
In the short story “Signs and Symbols,” Vladmir Nabokov entices the reader with the story of a concerned elderly couple who visits their mentally unstable son on his birthday at the sanitarium. This visit is further complicated by the son’s attempt to take his life, which compels the hospital staff at the sanitarium to prevent the parents from meeting their son. This circumstance then embarks on the difficult journey that life has been for this mother and father of their mentally deranged child. Nabokov provides a touching story to his readers and does this through: the illustration of the characters, the setting, and keeps the readers interest by presenting the story in a suspenseful way that it leaves the reader thirsting for more.
I would like to see my students speaking English and not having difficulty with their communication. I would not imagine studying any other major because all I love with passion is to teach children because teaching is what makes me happy and what I enjoy. I believe that as a teacher, learning never ends because we learn new things every day. There are many forms of non-verbal communication. These may include: writing, bodily motions, facial expression, smelling, whistle, drumming, touching etc. According to Salzmann, Stanlaw & Adachi (2015) “The term nonverbal communication, taken literally, refers to the transmission of signals by means other than spoke words.” The form of nonverbal communication I will be focused on is sign language. Sign language plays a major role in American communities for the deaf and the mute, so they may be able to communicate with their friends and families.
