“I dream” (Martin Luther King Jr.). Most humans are familiar with the term “American Dream”. The “dream” is based on different categories for everyone, but certain aspects are apart of the “American Dream”. Achieving the ‘‘American Dream’’, takes a part on the color of skin and society placement. Therefore, the American dream is not obtainable due to social inequality and racial discrimination. The dreams that people have are sometimes hindered by their social standing. Excerpt A displays George and Lennie talking about the land that they dream about having, and how they would be higher in the social standings after achieving their American dream. “No, sir, we’d have our own place where we belonged and not sleep in no bunk house.” The quote …show more content…

Relating to Source A, Source B states, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation that they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” This quote displays that Martin Luther King Jr. has hope that one day this nation will become equal, and skin color will not influence the social standing of people. This connects to Source A because George and Lennie are outcasts in society, just as the African Americans portrayed in Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech. Therefore, supporting the theme of social inequality for African Americans and the loss of the American dream. “An’ it’d be our own, an’ nobody could can us. If we don’t like a guy we can say, ‘Get the hell out,’’(Source A). Furthermore, this quote in (Source A) relates to both quotes and the thesis because both Lennie and George are social outcasts, and the message of inequality is often shown. “We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal,”(Source B). Martin Luther King Jr. wanted everyone to be equal no matter the appearance and no one oppresses over another. This supports the theme of inequality because if humans are not treated equal from their appearances this concludes they are placed lower in society causing inequality. Hughes wants a world where everyone is equal and everyone is free. Since during the time Hughes wrote this poem, he was a black male that wanted freedom while whites already had freedom. Blacks were not equal to whites and it clearly states that everyone should be equal and sharing the same rights. Hughes makes it clear the he did not want appearances or skin color to affect the amount of rights one person had. ‘‘A world I dream where black or white, Whatever race you be, Will share the bounties of the earth, And every man is free,’’(Source C). This is related to the theme of social inequality, Hughes is dreaming of a world where people are equal, therefore meaning there is inequality.
