AMERICAN BEAUTY
Given four stars by Roger Ebert, the film American Beauty was released in 1999. Ebert seemed to really like this film. Using terms like “right choice” and “embodies intelligence” when speaking of Kevin Spacey’s eyes and voice being the right actor for this film. Ebert commented that this movie was a comedy because we as views laugh at the absurdity of the hero’s problems. He feels the performances in this film walk a line between parody and simple realism. He did not seem to have anything negative to say about the actors, plot or any other aspect of this film. Calling “American Beauty” the kind of film where you prove something important, if only to yourself as opposed to the kind of victory you get in a feel-good movie.

PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER This movie was filmed in 2012 and only given three stars by Roger Ebert. Clearly not his favorite film based on his star rating, but I’m not so sure that he didn’t like movie. The lack of negative phrases isn’t as much of a surprise as the lack of positive phases in this critique. One point made by Ebert was that this film was one his previous adolescent self would have loved. Ebert refers to other reviews this film has received both good and bad and claims they were made by previous adults. While I am unsure of what he means exactly by this he still is not making me feel as though he does not like this film. He does however state that the cast is near-ideal, leaving room for negative connotation yet he doesn’t make any. In my opinion Roger Ebert must have enjoyed the movie “American Beauty” more than “Perks”. I am basing this observation not only on the star rating but the lack of Opinion shared in the critique of “Perks”. I feel Ebert could have given us more of his sense of judgment when it came to either of these films but then again he is the critic not me.

A memorable, modern age comedy sees amy Schumer as the provocative female lead. Schumer wrote the script and it is obvious that her character's backstory mirrors her own personal life. Schumer herself has said how this film reflects her own life that she is “unapologetically herself”. Schumer teams up with Judd Apatow who is famous for such films as “The 40 year old virgin” and “Knocked Up” to direct this film.
Orson Wells’ film Citizen Kane received terrific reviews as soon as it opened in 1941. While the average movie buff would not value Citizen Kane as much, for the critics, directors and film students: it provides a technical handbook as to the nuts and bolts of how a film is to be assembled. It has now been chosen as the greatest American film in a number of polls due to the many remarkable scenes and performances, cinematic and narrative techniques and experimental innovations in photography, editing and sound.

Watching a Kevin Smith film is like jumping into a puddle of pop culture. This is because he has packed his movies with real to life factors, such as love and relationships, jobs, friends, and there is always some form of reference to movies themselves (meaning the video store in Clerks, the movie being made in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back). “Smith clearly has his hand on the pulse of his generation (“X” marks the spot). His observations about comic books, video games, and other aspects of life in the ‘90s are as insightful as they often are scathing. But this is nothing new – it was evident in both Clerks and Mallrats. What’s different here is that Smith has crafted a touching nuanced romance which may be the most memorable screen love affair since Before Sunrise.” (Chasing Amy, James Berardinelli) Meaning, Kevin Smith has kept his eye open since making Clerks and has added new touches of pop culture that catch the eye of the moviegoers. This could be because of his “hand on the pulse of his generation”. He incorporates his main passions: Comics and movies together to form a finished product.
The use of camera techniques in American Beauty begins with the opening scene of Jane’s video recording, and subsequently repeats again later in the film. For example, the video scene where Jane Burnham (played by Thora Birch) says

Regarding physical qualities, everybody has their own idiosyncrasies or quirks, things which make them peculiar and yet interesting. These features make us who we are and even if we consider them as flaws, they still make us beautiful somehow. The 1957 film, Funny Face, was actually a tribute to the late Audrey Hepburn’s rather unusual, quirky facial features—her large nose, thick eyebrows, slightly crooked teeth, being doe-eyed—which all summed up to her being the epitome of a truly beautiful woman that she was (De La Hoz 6). Audrey Kathleen Ruston Hepburn embodied both essential aspects of inner and outer beauty which does not equate to being flawless. Voted as the “Most Beautiful Woman of All Time” in 2006 by New Woman magazine, it is evident that women today still look up to her as a truly beautiful woman (Keogh 2). She was one of the greatest film stars of the 20th century—some of her notable films were Funny Face, Roman Holiday, Breakfast at Tiffany’s—and at present, she is still a timeless Hollywood star and fashion icon. Furthermore, she was a philanthropist for the UNICEF organization—her only motive being to serve a cause she believed in (Spoto, 201). This innate, natural beauty she possessed clearly translated into how she presented herself to the world through her sense of style (Ferrer, 155). How she dressed clearly embodied who she was, which many women all over the world still aspire to be and which designers continue to try recreating. Audrey Hepburn’s timeless, individual style continues to influence the fashion world today.
American Beauty takes us deep inside ourselves and invites us to lose the fear of truly knowing ourselves. If we pretend we are someone we are not, if we desperately hold on to the lies we force ourselves to live, then we only succeed in becoming more lonely and estranged.
Another aspect of the film I found impeccable was the scenery, which centres on the lives of America’s decadent and spoiled. The scenery presents the idea that they have money than they need and they can do whatever they want whenever they want. Their scenery is a recreation of European historical grandeur, a fact that the film is keen to demonstrate.
The film American Beauty, directed by Sam Mendes, is an acclaimed award winning film, ending up on around 200 critics top twenty lists. It's not only the script and they way it was written that makes this film so unique, but also the techniques that were used and decisions that were made when it came to filming and editing the film. At the time the film was filmed in 1999 Sam Mendes was a relatively new director, this film put his name on the map, he later directed films such as, Revolutionary Road, Road to Perdition, Jar head, and many others including the new hit James Bond movie, Spectre. Sam Mendes has made his presence known in the industry becoming one of the most eminent directors in the twentieth century.
This is a film that rightfully makes consumers hesitant to waste hard earned money at the box office – for fear of having to endure such a wildfire of ridiculousness. At no point is American Ultra clever or witty. It attempts to be cute, but only patronizes, although that was going to come with the territory right from the start as soon as Jessie Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart landed starring roles. Granted, they’re both talented in their own right, though rarely on a scale worth measuring (a statement that will remain true, even despite Eisenberg’s upcoming role as Lex Luthor). In the end, American Ultra is a poor, embarrassing attempt at a spy flick – and due to its stoner tendencies, it will completely disinterest potential moviegoers (unless you’re a stone). Movie critic Catherine Ranfold said "Finally, a really good teen flick!" She mentioned about all the gross gags used in the movie and still had some more praising to do. The critic noted how the film was "vulgar, raunchy, innocent, rude, funny and incredibly sweet- much like high school" (Ranfold). It reminded viewers of their high school days with the party goers and the so called nerds. She also found the portrayal of girls in the movie refreshing, because they were "more than objects of desire." She described her memories on the sexual dominance of females over the males because it was the females who choose who they would lose their virginity too and "That's something that's bang in the film."
A Beautiful Mind may have been developed to be a crowd-pleaser as well as a tear-jerker, because you know this is a man’s life without falsities. It is blatant and true, that’s all. This film proves that there are still instances when Hollywood-produced, big budget movies are worth a viewer's investment of time and money.
