For my work of art, I decided to appeal to the sense of smell. The animal in which I created this work of art for was an American black bear. I chose this specific animal because according to the National Park Service, bears in general are believed to have the “keenest sense of smell in the animal kingdom.” A bear’s sense of smell is by far its strongest sense. Black bears, specifically, have been estimated at smelling food from 18 to 20 miles away. Their nasal mucosa (lining of the nasal cavity) has been found to be 100 times greater than that of humans. Within my art work, I have included several foods like pears, cherries, peaches, peanut butter, bread, and jelly to appeal to the black bears sense of smell. I found that fruits, especially,
Hey, I didn’t see you there, how are you?I'm just wondering whether or not a big ol' grizzly bear is going to come charging at me at any point in my life, but seeing as grizzly bears are endangered that probably won't happen. In the past, there were thought to be around 50,000 grizzly bears in North America, nowadays they are growing sparse there are estimated to be only around 1800, now not even a 20th of the population in the past. Most of these grizzlies are located in Yellowstone National Park and Alaska, but they can also be found in Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho and Montana. Some are thought to be in Washington.
Since the beginning of the year we have been reading a book by Ben Mikaelsen named Touching Spirit Bear. Cole starts out as a devious miscreant who never forgave or forgot. Cole soon gets banished to an island for a year. Throughout his experience he learns to start caring and forgiving after being mauled by a bear. To add to that he makes totem faces for everything he encounters such as sparrows, wolves, mice and bears. Each teaching him how he was and what they represented. This project is about how I can be like Cole and make a totem about my life and each animal face symbolizes every part of my life.
Nature, it is everywhere, everyone uses it. Quite often, however, people abuse it, such as with humans’ impact on grizzly bears. Grizzly bears are important to the environment because they have many useful purposes for the environment: “they provide an “umbrella” for the environment because they require such large home ranges.” (savethegreatbear.org/CAD/Grizzly.htm) The Grizzly Bear is extremely vulnerable to changes in its habitat and food cycle. This allows humans to detect small changes in the environment, just by watching this amazing species. The Government of Canada needs to try harder to stop the poaching of grizzly bears in Canada.
During the Renaissance era bear baiting was popular in all classes, especially the upper class. Kings and nobles, kept their own bear wards and watched bear baiting frequently in the gardens at their palaces. Bear baiting is when dogs are forced to attack a bear that is chained to a stake by the neck or leg. The dog’s job was to tear the bear’s throat while the bear would try to defend himself. The positioning and expressions of the animals and men show Medieval Bair Baiting by Geoffrey Luttrell Psalter to suggest that bear baiting, a familiar type of entertainment, involves a submissive animal and vicious dogs and humans provoking the animal into suffering whereas the positioning and expressions of the animals and men in Bear Baiting in Saxton Times by Richard Caton Woodville suggests bear baiting to involve a violent beast who is coerced into fighting to the death for the joy of the spectators.
In Kevin Young’s poem an “Ode to Pork,” the sound effects play immensely into the overall tone of the poem. It could help the reader conjure up times when they were in the kitchen themselves or having a meal prepared for them. It does also add heavily to a nostalgic flair by making the reader go back to possibly good memories of some kind of gathering. Even if it was not pork, it still became in a sense semi-personal to the reader because one thing is truly universal everyone does eat and everyone has some fond memory of eating their favorite food. Furthermore, humans are very apt at remembering sounds very well so as I read this I can even hear the sizzling grill or the popping of bacon.
The environmental pressure of the Pleistocene ice age caused a fast evolutionary jump from the species of Grizzly bears to Polar bears. The climate an animal lives in plays a large part in the composition of an animal. The availability of prey is one of the most crucial parts of survival. Mutations of species can impact them or die off quicklier.
In the novel, Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen, Cole Matthews shows trustworthiness and Humility, but also lacks both of them. Cole was hurtful to others because Peter tries to protect himself and his peers (Mikalesen, 10-13).He also was careless because he didn’t care about others. For example, he didn’t care if Peter got hurt when he smashed Peters head against the sidewalk (Mikalesen, 7-8). Lastly, he was judgmental because he would pick who he wants to beat up by their actions and words (Mikalesen, 35). For example, he committed crimes because others treated him bad. Cole Matthews lacked but then gained compassion in the novel Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Michaelson.
Scent is part of the five senses that are developed when an infant is still in the mother’s womb. It is processed by a part of the brain that correlates with memory, so at a young age an infant could differentiate who their mother is by scent. Odor is a sign and olfactory condition (Waskul & Vannini, 2008). As someone gets older they begin to develop scents they like and dislike. There are also scents that people find attractive and unattractive. When meeting another individual for the first time a human’s first instinct is to smell them without realizing it. For instance, have you ever sat by someone or hugged someone who smelled good or bad? If so, many people tend to associate the scent with attractiveness or unattractiveness depending on the level of smell. There have been many studies indicating that there is a strong correlation between odor and attractiveness. Although the scent is a universal and an undetectable smell it can influence the level of perceived attractiveness of another person.
Out of an Ice Age emerged one of our most majestic creatures in the world the polar bear. From its brown bear ancestry, the predator evolved to be a master of a harsh and unwelcoming ice kingdom. Intelligent, adaptable and fierce, the polar bear learned how to survive in a place that offers few comforts to any creature. But now that very environment is in flux. And so is the polar bear’s fate (Nature). Polar Bears are very different from other bears. Polar bears are very large bears compared to Black bears. Polar bears weigh anywhere between 330-1700lbs and Black bears weigh anywhere between 150-600lbs. They have strong legs with large, flattened feet with some webbing between their toes that help with walking on ice and swimming. The wide paws prevent sea ice from breaking by distributing weight while walking. Their paws allow them to pull a 600 pound seal out of its breathing hole (Rosing, 20). The webbed feet results in making polar bears, unlike other bear species to be considered as marine mammals along with seals, sea lions, walruses, whales and dolphins (Polar Bear). According to Rosing Polar bears are excellent swimmers and have been known to swim up to six miles an hour and as far as 60 miles at a stretch. The bears paddle with their front feet and steer with their back feet. They often overheat. Sometimes they venture into the waters just to cool off. When a bear climbs on an ice floe, it shakes itself off because it is trying to prevent ice from forming on its fur (22-23). Because of climate change and hunting of polar bears are now becoming an endangered species which is affecting the food chain. We can fix this by going green, banning polar bear hunting and keep creating these new hybrid bears that are mixed with griz...
If you are older than 4 years old you might know what this big bear . It is the Grizzly bear. Grizzly bears are very solitary and the bear looks like it's nice and fuzzy but this animal is really vicious. Grizzly bears are really dangerous and deadly and if you find one in the wild you should be very careful.
Introduction: In this report, I will be using the Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) as my chosen species. The Polar bear is the largest land living apex carnivore in the world, where males can reach a mass of over 450 Kg and females between 150 Kg to 350 Kg. Instantly recognizable by their white fur coat, which is technically transparent where it is the reflection of the snow that gives the Polar bear its beautiful white coat. As a Polar bear’s skin is black, allowing for some heat from sunlight to aid in respiration.
My topic is about black bears. I am going to write about what they eat. Im also talking about their habitat. Another thing I’m talking about is their physical features and where they live.
Polar bears are one of the Earth’s largest and most powerful carnivores. These bears are dependent on sea ice as their primary habitat and are thus found on the Arctic coasts of North America. The scientific term used to describe polar bears, Ursus maritimus translates to sea bear because polar bears spend most of their lives on the Arctic ice. A common misconception the public holds is that polar bears are white; their fur is actually consists of two transparent layers: hollow guard hairs and an undercoat. While the two layers appear white because the air spaces in each hair scatter light, they are actually transparent and the black skin underneath the fur is penetrated by sunlight, warming the bears body. Polar bears are the largest of
If the people don't do anything, then polar bears will no longer exist in the Arctic. The polar bears are almost extinct because polar bears are almost gone in the Arctic, they will be another animal extinct in the world. The polar bears are mostly found in the arctic circle. People need to be aware that in the arctic circle the temperatures have been getting warmer.
Hearing becomes a great asset on the rare occasions when I run free from Betty and Bob and they yell out my name looking for me. I have over 18 muscles in my ears, which make my ears very mobile (Gleeson). Due to this I can cock them towards sound. I can perceive frequencies twice as much as humans, and distinguish sounds up to four times better than humans (Gleeson). In the distance, I hear a man yelling out about the hot dogs he is selling. He is about 80 feet away, so we have to walk enough to be only 20 feet away from him so my owners can hear him. Not only can I hear the man who is advertising his hot dogs, but I can smell the hot dogs. My sense of smell is my most highly developed sense, and a large part of my brain is dedicated to it (Peter). I have 220 million olfactory receptors, while Bob and Betty only have 5 million (“Health”). Not only that, but I have nasal cavities that are sensitive to odors (“Mammal Senses” 120). On another note, not only can us dogs smell food, but male dogs can smell when a female dog is in heat. The vomeronasal organ is what is in charge of capturing the chemical stimuli found when females are in heat (Foggle 49). I can absolutely not wait to get to the hot dog stand so I can hopefully eat some hot
