Amish and American Educations
A good percentage of people around the world may believe that every education system is the same, based on values and beliefs. Two education systems that seem to contrast each other are American and Amish cultures. Some similarities of the American and the Amish cultures are: preschool, class progression, and school time. Some differences are: personal and religious values. This study covers some main ideals and the differences in the cultures and how they can be explained.
The American and the Amish have a lot of differences when it comes to education. The Americans have a lot of different school options around each school district, and the Amish are able to decide to go to a private or public school, but most
go to a private school. The teachers have to have college degrees in order to teach the students what they need to know to get them ready for tests. The amish teachers only do training to the eight grade level. Students are able to start school when they are young and go to preschool, but are able to chose whether they want to go or not. When they are about six years old, they will start elementary school and go all the way through high school. Amish will attend school from elementary to eight grade. Americans have the option to go to college for a higher degree of learning for a career they may want. The American schools provide transportation for the sudents to and from school, whereas the amish parents have to hire bus drivers so there children can get to and from school without having to walk. The Americans get government fundings for the schools too run every year. The amish are not permitted to accept school fundings from the state, the school is funded by the patrons and the churches (Hostetler22). The americans and the amish have fewer similarities
There are many different cultures throughout the world. They each have their own distinct customs and beliefs relating to marriage, rites of passage, conflict resolutions, education etc... The most interesting aspect of each culture is how they incorporate their religious beliefs into the healthcare they receive. Some cultures are not affected by their religious beliefs when dealing with healthcare. They are not regulated in the terms of medical procedures and practices they can obtain from healthcare professionals. However, this is not true for every culture in this world. The Amish and Mennonite culture is depicted upon separating themselves from this world and living a plain life. These two cultures are heavily rooted in their religious beliefs and have tendencies not to stray away from those beliefs regardless of the possible benefits of modern technology. Amish and Mennonite culture may share some similarities, but they have some differences also. A culture’s religious beliefs will be the main determining factor in the healthcare they choose.
Too often, society is too distracted oohing and aahing over the little boys’ miniature overalls and straw hats or the little girls’ dainty bonnet to question the Amish community. Regardless if it are those living around them or tourists, their lifestyles rarely produce criticism. Whether it is deception or no true issue exists is up for interpretation and debate. When the colonists came to America, they classified the Native Americans as complete brutal savages. But was that a correct assumption? The Native Americans lived a life that was a complete opposite from the way that the Europeans were accustomed to. The Native Americans believed that the land was shared by everyone and not one person could own it. The Native Americans also had a polytheistic religion which completely went against the beliefs of the colonists. The colonists viewed the Native Americans as savages and barbarians because their ways of living were different.
Many people have different views on what Appalachia is, I grew up thinking that Appalachia meant people were dirty, poor, illiterate, inbreed and we also called them mountain people. In essence, the education of Amish children is done in such a way that encourages conformity rather than individuality. When Eli Jr. heads off to school he will most likely be taught in the same way as his older siblings, parents and teacher, which involved him and Mary doing “seatwork like all the other children” (243). That is to say, that all the students in the school Eli Jr. attends receive similar lessons by the same teacher which does not allow students to think of other ways to approach subjects and solve problems, and that leads to conformity within the community, perhaps without the Amish even realizing
Watching the Amish riding their horse drawn carriages through Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, you catch a glimpse of how life would have been 150 years ago. The Amish, without their electricity, cars, and television appear to be a static culture, never changing. This, however, is just an illusion. In fact, the Amish are a dynamic culture which is, through market forces and other means, continually interacting with the enormously tempting culture of America. So, one might be led to wonder how a culture like the Amish, one that seems so anachronistic, has not only survived but has grown and flourished while surrounded by a culture that would seem to be so detrimental to its basic ideals. The Amish, through biological reproduction, resistance to outside culture, compromise, and a strong ethnic symbolism have managed to stave off a culture that waits to engulf them. Why study the Amish? One answer would be, of course, to learn about their seemingly pure cooperative society and value system (called Ordung). From this, one may hope to learn how to better America's problem of individualism and lack of moral or ethical beliefs. However, there is another reason to study the Amish. Because the Amish have remained such a large and distinct culture from our own, they provide an opportunity to study the effects of cultural transmission, resistance, and change, as well as the results of strong symbolism in maintaining ethnic and cultural isolation.
The constant debate over the school systems in America, have yielded a discussion over whether these school systems promote individuality through ones’ schoolwork or if the whole system is set up to conform every student. Some important issues to discuss when looking at schools causing individuality or conformity are school dress codes, rigid school schedules and classes, and little creativity promoted in schools.
All students should take notice and interest in cultural diversity. There are numerous different cultures in America. One in particular is the Amish culture, which I would like to familiarize you with.

Today, the way the educational system works in the U.S. concerns a large number of people in this country. "Only 25% of adults have a great deal of confidence in the people running education, according to the General Social Survey, down from 49% in 1974" (Russel 4). A lot of discussions have been held to find the best ways to improve teaching methods. At the same time, people recognize that a very valuable solution to increase the level of education in the United States is to look at some problems that cause difficulties and hamper the enhancement of the quality of education. The first step is to define these problems. As in every country, the U.S. wants to develop its national standards in education and wants them to be high. This has always been a government function. Being democratic, the government is trying to fit the qualities of democracy into the way to set these standards. Of course, this is not an easy task since this country has a very diverse population. To please everybody has always been an almost impossible task. Despite this impossibility, national standards have already been set. "If a visitor from another nation was dropped into an American public school classroom without knowing the state or the region, he or she would be likely to see the same lesson taught in the same way to children of the same age" (Ravitch 9). Everything seems right except the fact that the abilities of children are different. Not everybody is able to study at a college; not everybody wants to continue being educated. It is obvious that every country wants to produce as many educated people as possible. But, at the same time, every country needs workers because, regardless of the fast development of technology, there is still a great necessity for human labor. To satisfy all the necessities of the country, the government should provide different kinds of education. This does not mean that we need to eliminate all of the standards; they could be set in each field of education. Although standards are set, there is still a very big difference in teaching methods in different schools.
