I am sorry to hear that the Allentown School District is having trouble hiring and retaining health room staff, and also has a reputation for not valuing their employees. According to Costante (2012), the cost for losing knowledgeable employees is always high. In fact, replacing skilled staff can average over two times their annual salary, decrease morale, and increase inefficiency. Costante (2012) suggests that school nurse administrators inform new nurse employees of all aspects of the school where he/she will be working and to pair new employees with veteran school nurse mentors. Mentors rather than preceptors are investing in new grad nurses for longer than just a few months. NGNs are receiving constructive criticism from their mentors and serve as mediators between workplace issues. High levels of anxiety are reported in the first few weeks of employment, but with mentors there to have a caring attitude, the levels of anxiety can be greatly decreased and learning can be much easier facilitated (2012).

There are several causes of nurses’ turnover, which include lack of job satisfaction. Scheduling has also caused problems for nurses, mandatory overtime; patients are becoming sicker and need a higher level of care leading them to quit. Without recourse, the nurses opt to leave their jobs to concentrate on other jobs or areas of nursing. Other causes include the lack of autonomy and ineffective leaders and managers. It is expensive to replace the nurses who leave, since they leave with the knowledge, training, and expertise that has to be imparted on new nurses, requiring more resources. As the forthcoming nursing shortage threatens the United States, organizations must be knowledgeable in the recruitment and retention of nurses. The challenge facing health care organizations will be to retain sufficient numbers of nurses to provide safe, efficient, quality care to patients. Organizations will look to recruit and attract quality nurses to fill vacancies. As turnover in nursing is a recurring problem, health care organizations will look for strategies to reduce turnover. The rate of turnover for bedside nurses in 2013 ranged from 4.4 to 44.6% (American Nurses Association, 2013). Nurse retention focuses on keeping nurses in the organization and preventing turnover. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the significance of recruitment and retention of nurses, review the literature, and explore how recruitment and retention apply to nursing.
During the time when all nurses were undervalued, Gordon followed and observed three registered nurses every day at Boston’s Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, while on their daily routines for almost two years. Each of the nurses have different jobs, which cause them to have different roles. The three nurses Gordon evaluated were: Nancy Rumplik, an oncology nurse; Ellen Kitchen, a home care nurse practitioner; and Jeannie Chaisson, a clinical nurse specialist. All three nurses together have more than 50 years of work experiences in the medical field. Gordon gives us an assortment of cases the nurse worked on. She shows how each nurse has special abilities when it comes to helping their patients.
Although I believe I am competent in the above specified areas, I am still not confident that I will get sufficient support in the hospital environment in terms of knowledge sharing, moral support and being given constructive feedback. Constructive criticism increases confidence in the work role and reduces stress in an individual (Doody, Tuohy & Deasy, 2012). In my previous professional placements, I have been able to demonstrate my competency to work in the healthcare environment. I have received positive feedback from placement educators, buddy nurses, and patients. Despite being competent in a range of the above areas, NGNs may still face transition shock.
The modern nurse has much to be thankful for because of some of the early pioneers of nursing, such as Florence Nightingale and Jensey Snow. However, the scope and influence of professional nursing, as well as the individual nurse, has seen more exponential growth and change in North America since the establishment of the first professional organization for nursing, the Nurses Associated Alumnae of the United States and Canada, which in 1911 came to be known as the American Nurses Association.
There is a shortage of all health care professions throughout the United States. One shortage in particular that society should be very concerned about is the shortage of Registered Nurses. Registered Nurses make up the single largest healthcare profession in the United States. A registered nurse is a vital healthcare professional that has earned a two or four year degree and has the upper-most responsibility in providing direct patient care and staff management in a hospital or other treatment facilities (Registered Nurse (RN) Degree and Career Overview., 2009). This shortage issue is imperative because RN's affect everyone sometime in their lifetime. Nurses serve groups, families and individuals to foster health and prevent disease.

Nurses have always been an undervalued asset to the health care industry; however, there is always a great need for them. With more uninsured Americans requiring safe, affordable medical care, the pressing issue of nursing education is not a priority (Aiken, 2011). Recently, there have been modifications taken place toward the current nursing shortage, the decrease of nursing graduates, a workforce that is becoming older, and other factors that influence nurse educator shortage (Baker, Fitzpatrick, & Griffin, 2011). Nurse educators are required to advise students, complete research, and perform committee work all while teaching (Baker, Fitzpatrick, & Griffin, 2011). They also have multiple jobs outside of practicing nursing and teaching. Nurse educators have stressful roles that hold many expectations, yet there is no independence in making their own decisions concerning things. Aiken (2011) suggests that the best way to begin combatting this shortage should include increasing the number of nurses who hold a bachelor’s degree in nursing from 50% to 80% by 2020 (p. 196). Forty-eight percent of nurse instructors are expected to be aged 55 and older and are predicted to retire by this time. (Baker, Fitzpatrick, & Griffin, 2011).

It is likely that most people have heard about the nursing shortage for years now, and perhaps they believe it’s been fixed. However, the nursing profession is experiencing a reoccurring deficiency. According to Brian Hansen, (2002), there was a nation wide shortage in 2001 of 126,000 full-time registered nurses, but the shortage will surge to 808,000 by 2020 if something isn't done. This pattern is a persisting cycle of high vacancies followed by layoffs and a high over supply of registered nurses. Various factors contribute to the lack of nurses within the health care facilities, but today’s shortages are a little different. Many feel that this scarcity is severe and long-drawn-out.
