At the very end of the book Tip O’Neill gives a checklist of what every politician should do and what he or she should remember. The strength of this book is that Tip O'Neill gave a lot of examples, he recounted stories that he was told in the past, and he also gave examples from when he was in office. The weaknesses of this book were that he didn't tell a lot about other politicians experiences and what they had told him about their experiences in office and they also didn't tell him a lot of their stories unlike what he did in this book. Tip O'Neill proves his thesis in this book because at the very end when he gives his checklist it rounds out everything he has said in the book previously but in a shorter version. In Tip O’Neill’s book, in the section speaking out, he talked many times about his speeches and how you must keep them short and he gave a story about when he was with the bishop that he had asked him how long his speech was going to be at a party and the bishop said “I used to speak for about an hour, but one time as I was just getting started, a gust of wind blew away my text and I had to wing it on
The fourth chapter of City Politics by Dennis R. Judd & Todd Swanstrom covers the rise of "Reform Politics" with many local governments during the first half of the 1900s as a way to combat the entrenched political machines that took control of many large city governments in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Over the course of the chapter, Judd & Swanstrom quickly cover the history of the "reform movement" with different examples of how the reform movement affected city politics in different areas.
The effects of new digital technologies and their policy implications result in a complex issue that is always evolving. “Change of State: Information, Policy, and Power” by Sandra Braman presents a breakdown of policy development for the constant evolution of the technological world and how it affects the state and society. She theorizes that the ‘information state’ is in the process of replacing the welfare state, to the detriment of the citizen and the democratic process. Braman “looks at the ways in which governments are deliberate, explicit, and consistent in their use of information policy to exercise power, exploring not only such familiar topics as intellectual property rights and privacy but also areas in which policy is highly effective but little understood,” (The MIT Press 2014). She argues that development of information policy cause transformation in the nature of governance, making the state more powerful and the citizen lose their rights, freedom and identity.

The game of hardball is all about keeping up a good reputation to your peers and to the public. A successful politician can build up alliances. It is definitely impossible for someone to make their way to the top without any help. Instead of getting help, a person could make a mistake by “limit[ing] their horizons to missions they can accomplish alone” (15). These people ultimately lose the game. Matthews describes one way to forge an alliance in the maxim “It’s better to receive than give”. While confidence is a good thing, too much pride can end in disaster. A way to avoid looking too confident is asking for help. During the General Elections of 1978, Jimmy Carter asked for the help of those who had lost on election night. This is wise because they looked for work and wanted to be needed. Votes and alliances can be made simply because of a feeling of inclusion in the process. A politician asking for help is “offering a chance to join in the political action, to be part of his success”...
I got the Faith and Family Left result on my Political Typology Quiz. It says The Faith and Family Left combine strong support for activist government with conservative attitudes on many social issues. Fully 85% of the Faith and Family Left says religion is very important. Besides that, 51% of them want the government to do more to protect morality - the highest percentage of any typology group. This is an only typology group that is “majority-minority”.
In chapter 3 he encourages the exchange of favors. He mainly focuses on others doing favors for you. Matthews incorporates Jimmy Carter’s plan on hiring people who worked in failed companies. The mentality behind this is by offering work in their time of need will create this sense of gratitude towards the former president. Politics is all about understanding what people want and getting in tune with the minds of others. Chapter 3 circles that concept and giving advantages on how to make yourself almost indispensable in the eyes of some people; having a more personal connection with people so they would not have a reason to vote against you. Even chapter 4 and 5 show this type of mentality; viewing politics as a mind game and playing tricks to succeed. For example, chapter 4 discusses loyalty and keeping the mentality of “What have you done for me lately?”. By doing little favors for someone after certain periods of time so they can remember it easier. Even chapter 5 discusses the relationship a politician should have with their enemy. This novel shows the lifestyle a politician must lead to be acceptable as a
Political Analysis Political analysis is the method by which the judgement upon any political event, in any part of the world, is performed. It is based on the perception of the political reality of the region or the country in question and the perception of the relationship of this political reality with international politics. In order to perceive the international situation and international politics, it is imperative to have general outlines that explain the political reality of every state and the relationships of these states with the other states of the world, especially the major powers that influence the progress of events in the world. Since the Islamic Ummah is commanded to carry the Islamic Da'wah to all people, it is therefore obligatory upon the Muslims to be in touch with the world with awareness of its conditions and perception of its problems. The Muslims must acquaint themselves with what motivates the states and the peoples and pursue the political actions that occur in the world.
The Running Mate, Joe Klein’s political novel, contained a fictional candidate named Charlie Martin. In this book, Charlie Martin is democratic candidate for the U. S. Senate. Martin was a Vietnam veteran, who became a politician because of his mother who was Martin’s hometown Mayor. Four years earlier, Mr. Martin ran for President. He was defeated in the primary election by the current fictional President, Democrat Jack Stanton and at the end of novel has aspirations to run for Governor. Charlie Martin has several strengths and weakness as a political candidate. Some of his strengths are that he is a good speaker, as demonstrated in the debates, a Vietnam veteran, and has experience. His major weakness was that his mind was not on the campaign, but on a woman. Also, in this novel, there were the Lords. These characters served were Charlie Martin’s Vietnam buddies. They were his friends and some were his advisors, like Gidian Reese, who was the National Security Advisor. His role as a Senator was like that of any other Senator. He votes on bills, like the bills that were proposed by President Jack Stanton, proposes bills, and accepts illegal money from outside sources. The President, media, interest groups, committees, congressional staff and money all influence on who is appointed to office. All of these people/groups influence by giving money, influencing of a persons’ background, or on who is an important person. Policy for appointing someone to office is that, if you scratch my back I’ll scratch yours. Meaning, that if someone gives you a large amount of money, then the candidate usually returns the favor by appointed him or her to a selected office.

1. In your opinion, which ancient political practice, protective or developmental republicanism, has had the greatest impact on our liberal democratic practice?
Concluding thoughts on this book are as follows. The author does a supreme job organizing the topics in this book rationally. He takes things that would seem obvious to others in relation to a particular topic, and describes them so in depth that it is almost as though a personal epiphany is reached in each section. To put it plainly, this book just makes sense. Nothing in it had the feel of new information; rather it takes old information and applies it perfectly to pertaining topics. The author does a lot to ensure that all of his arguments are grounded in logic and reasoning rather than in facts and figures. Granted he does use history to prove many points, but for many others he makes arguments that just seem sensible. This book, however difficult to read due to a wide use of vocabulary, is very thought provoking and should be read by anybody who has ever sought justification for the way societies act in different situations.
He is more interested in what the individual, the voter, can do in politics; rather than political tactics. Furthermore, Obama again presents the ideas of humanity, charity, and an eagerness to cooperate with opponents, something much needed in the current day. However, while Obama’s opinions are spot on, his solutions are idealistic; making them very unrealistic for the current world. In Chapter Two: Values, Obama wants a political scope the action plans, values, and ideas of a candidate are more important than who they are dating or what color shoes they wore.
Adrienne Rich once wrote an open letter titled “Politics of Location” that profoundly opened my eyes to a relevantly obvious concept of self-identity. More often than not, one fails to see the truth that sits right before his or her own eyes. However, it is still the responsibility of the individual to be accountable for that truth. The concept of politics of location is simply that one’s life experiences affects one’s perspective. Unintentionally, individuals make themselves the center of reality. When, in actuality, one is only the center of his or her own reality. Rich also goes on to explain that people are different; yet, individuals have an uncanny since of imagined community. That being, the feeling that

What is politics? Throughout history, people have participated in politics on many different levels. They may have participated through a direct democracy, in which they directly governed, or they may have participated through a representative democracy, in which they participated by electing representatives. As citizens’, people have participated in politics to attain the things they needed or wanted, the valued things. Participation in politics has been the way that people have a voice and change the things that directly affect their lives. Throughout the course of history, politics has been the competition of ideas; they decide who gets what, when, where and how.
