Alfred Lord Tennyson was a national kown poet with the writings of “The Lady Of Shalott”, “Memoriam”, and “The Light Of The Brigade”. All three poems were popular during their time. Alfred was the fourth oldest of twelve. His father wanted all his kids to get an education. His father was a clergyman and was in debt for sending his kids to college. Alfred Tennyson was born on August 6, 1809 in Lincolnshire, United Kingdom. Alfred went to Louth Grammer School in 1815 along with his two brothers Fredrick and Charles. Originally written in 1832 but published in its final form in the year o 1842. People say Alfred had a ten year silence from 1832 to 1842. This was a different but stange written poem at the time to make the reader keep reading it. It basically is a series of short memorable statements of traditional wisdom and statements that are construrcted in to the general truth. It probably was the most popular of his poems because of the big hit it made when it was published finally in 1842. It was written after The Donna di Scalotta an Italian romance. Children often grow up listening to fairy tales. Repunsel is one fairy tale about a girl cursed to live a life of isolation in a tower. She longs to break free from seclusion and become part of the outside world. She eventually finds her one true love and risks her life to be with him. "The Lady of Shalott" by Lord Alfred Tennyson relates to Repunsel in many ways. In this poem, Tennyson tells a story of isolation. The woman in this ballad is also doomed to remain on her sheltered island eternally. If she even looks out at Camelot, she will die. She finally sees her "red-cross knight" (line 78). The Lady of Shalott escapes from her "silent isle imbower[ed]," yet dies a tragic death before she even meets Lnacelot (17). In reality, many people do not experience this extreme form of seclusion, although it is very common for someone to change his/her life or even risk it to be with the person he/she loves.
