Alcoholism
Alcohol is a big part of our society now because we can get to it more easily. “In 2012, as many as 87.6 percent of American adults over age 18 were reported in a study to have consumed alcohol at some point in their lives.” as stated in “Disease Theory of Alcoholism.” My dad was an alcoholic and it was challenging to be with him because most of the time he was drunk. My dad drank over a span of 20 years and on November 27th 2012 he died of alcoholism. It impacted my life because I knew I would never see or hear him again. That day my life changed forever. You form the habit by drinking all the time. You don’t crave alcohol, your brain starts to think it needs it. Alcoholics don't think they have a problem because they are immune to it. It is like a habit to them. People believe that Alcoholic Anonymous (AA) helps alcoholics but “while Alcoholics Anonymous has accomplished the unthinkable, its accomplishments have damaged the society.” (Barbour 1998). My dad went to AA and it help for a while but he just got tired of going and he was invested in drinking all the time. During AA he was in a dark hole and it was hard for him to come out of it. According to the article by Scott Barbour, Alcoholism is Not a Disease, "After just one month in the Fellowship, 81 percent of the new members have already dropped out. After three months, 90 percent have left, and a full 95 percent have disappeared inside one year!" (Barbour 1998) As you see in my research many people are having the same issues. Yes I know you might do it to be cool and all but trust me, you will regret it in the long run. Many people have died over drinking excessively. As stated in an article by NBC news, Young, a worker for Department for Veterans Affair, “Individuals are faced with this identity-threatening choice they have to make.” (NBC News). The closer you are to a liquor store the more your brain will say “oh alcohol, I need you.” You can choose to end your addiction. You can choose to improve your life.
