Process control within an organization is a meeting or exceeding standards that are determined by setting goals to attain within the company to improve processes for better outcomes. In setting goals, managers determine the standard in which they will operate. For example, the shipping department must process thirty shipments per day. This now becomes the standard to meet and if it is achievable, will be a good way to keep employees motivated. If the goal is not achievable, companies should consider changing those standards to make them achievable. With the case study, the process of security checkpoints is the focus for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Assuming the average traveler has two carry-on bags, the process of moving through security takes time and can be quite frustrating. Therefore, a way to increase efficiency in this area could be for passengers to check all suitcases prior to moving through security checkpoints. In contrast, it will slow the process at check-in counters but would aid in the TSA to increase safety by checking less articles which contain numerous items. Instead, it would allow them to check credentials, boarding pass and perform the full body x-ray cutting the time in half. Another possible solution that would make TSA agents aware of delays would be to have counters installed at the screening points. This would represent a concurrent control by collecting data while they perform their duties. For example, visually seeing your results make you perform at a more consistent pace trying to reach goals that have been …show more content…

It is obvious that the Department of Homeland Security has been reactionary to each separate breach of security that has arose since the year two-thousand one. As Williams (2017) stated, “feedback control is a mechanism used for gathering information about performance deficiencies after they occur” (p. 335). To think back to the day of the 9/11 attack, the personal stance on security is that even though it may sacrifice some efficiency for passengers moving through the security checkpoints there are ways to lend to the efficiency of your own travel experience. Using feedforward control is a mechanism for gathering information about performance deficiencies before they occur” (Williams, 2017, p. 336). For example, if DHS implemented a trusted traveler program basing risk on past travel incidents they could flag higher risk passengers by including some identifying marks on their credentials. Once they book their travel they will be flagged and TSA can allow for a more thorough search and inspection of these types of passengers when they pass through checkpoints. Another form of feedforward control would be to monitor the volume of passengers traveling at different times during the day. For example, if red-eye flights are the least flown flights then schedule smaller crews at that time. When the heaviest travel times occur the TSA
