Air Quality
Air quality is one of the most significant environmental issues facing Australians in urban areas. As the Australian population continues to grow, the more we pump pollutants into the atmosphere by burning fuels for industrial production, domestic use and transport are having harmful effects.
Over the past twenty years there has been a large increase in the population in urban areas such as Sydney and Melbourne. This influx of people into these areas means there is going to be a rise in the air pollutants being forced into the atmosphere.
The main sources of the increasing amount of air pollution in the atmosphere include both industrial and diffuse sources including the emissions from industries and manufacturing activities, burning fossil fuels but also household items such as barbeques, aerosol cans, fires, transport and lawn mowing. An inversion is a deviation from the normal change of an atmospheric property with altitude. This means that as you get higher the temperature should decrease but when there is a temperature inversion this isn’t the case. When is happens that means that a high-pressure system is formed and the air doesn’t move around much. During the night the earth radiates back into space the heat accumulated from during the day. When we think of air pollution we think of the refineries in our cities and the exhaust coming from our cars mostly. In reality there are many more pollutants that we don't think about every day. The six most common air pollutants are; “Carbon monoxide, Nitrogen oxides, Sulphur oxides, Particulate matter, Volatile organic compounds, and Ground-level ozone (nitrogen oxide and Volatile organic compounds reaction)”(David Suzuki Foundation). The fact is people are dying from air pollution and we are doing nothing to make it better, in fact air pollution is getting worse.

Exposure to air pollution increases sensitivity to allergens, impairs lungs, causes asthma attacks and death (Climate change, 2007). Air pollution can cause short-term respiratory symptoms such as coughing, throat irritation, and shortness of breath (California’s drought, 2015). The most harmful pollutants in the air are ozone, fine particles, and air toxics. Since the drought causes warmer weather, levels of ozone or smog increase in the air. Ozone is the principal component of smog and it is dangerous on ground level, which affects human health, crops, and buildings. Ozone smog is formed when vehicle and factory pollution react with sunlight and heat (Climate change, 2007). The lack of storms due to the drought eliminates the natural cleansing effect of precipitation. The low levels of precipitation trap fine particles on ground level. Fine particles in the air are harmful when inhaled and can heighten respiratory illnesses such as asthma and bronchitis. Air toxics are the chemicals in the air that can cause cancer or serious health problems. Mercury, asbestos, and benzene are dangerous air toxics and diesel exhaust particulate is the number one airborne carcinogen in California (California’s drought, 2015). These pollutants can have serious damaging affects on aquatic, forest and wildlife ecosystems, as well as deterioration of buildings. Carbon monoxide is another form of pollution. It reduces the blood?s ability to carry oxygen. If a human is exposed to higher levels, it can cause chest pains, angina attacks or even death.
