Over the years art is becoming a way to express feelings without the need of violence. Ai Weiwei is one of the very well known protestant artists who made various types of art projects to speak against China's communist goverment and the injustices that have happened. No violence is used through these art projects because they are just simply pieces of art that speak by themselves. Through all this Ai Weiwei is able to bring awareness and get people to support his causes around the world. One issue which I feel very strongly about is the murders and disapperances of women in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Many families are affected by the disapereances of their daughters, sisters, mothers, and wives each year. To this date, it is still a mystery who is behind all these crimes, and not many people are willing to stand up and stop such autrocities.
My proposal for a public art project is to build a statue of a woman in some sort of pose showing delicatecy as well as affliction. The body of the woman should be bare showing the contours of her breasts and curves but not much detail. T...
The Statue of a kouros depicts a Greek man in the nude. Although he looks like a man, the large scale, and the miss proportioned features makes it unnaturalistic. The toes are too long, the genetalia is unrealistically small, and the joint lines are exaggerated.
Frida Kahlo and Barbara Kruger’s issues faced throughout their lifetime can be connected to our course. Frida Kahlo’s artwork could be discussed in the Guerrilla Girls book that we have read early in the semester. The Guerrilla Girls portrayed different artists, and their battles faced as women. Frida Kahlo’s art was overshadowed by her artistic husband, Diego Rivera, similarly to many other women artists in the Guerilla Girls. Most women were not credited for their artwork, and were not portrayed in guilds unless they were married or came from a wealthy family. Barbara Kruger’s photography portrayed many feminist prints. Throughout this course, we have discussed the meaning of being a feminist and the issues feminist face
Ca.630 BCE. Limestone. This is a women freestanding statue in Greek art. Both of these two statues are youth sculpture and freestanding which are the naturalistically and not stocky. They do not have muscles and a strong body, I can only see they are being the lean body types. As the female statue, her feet are standing on the same level, but the male one is not. She is putting her right hand on her chest and wearing clothes to wrap her slim body. Thus, the Greek art only has little bit impact by Egyptians. Portraying nude men can be accepted, but for women it is not.
Much of Ai Weiwei’s activism and artwork has been influenced by his experiences growing up. Ai Weiwei lived through a tumultuous time in Chinese history, with the Cultural Revolution, the Tiananmen Square Massacre and the Opening Up of China by Deng Xiaoping. Ai Weiwei’s father, Ai Qing was a famous poet during the Cultural Revolution. However, he was targeted in the Anti-Rightist campaig...
When beginning my sketch, I took a moment to analyze the work of art and found that the statue illuminated a sense of serenity. Like most viewers my initial reaction was to explore the statue from head to toe as I sought out the different elements and principles of art. The statue was close to life-size and just about my height, so looking straightforward we were eye to eye. I noticed the softness gathered about the facial structure, but all the same time the depth and complexity that was engulfed around the muscularity of the body. The rigorous symmetry was accounte...
The artwork I chose for the art criticism project was ‘The Survivors’ by Kathe Kollwitz. The piece was created in 1923 in Berlin, Germany, where she resided with her husband. She and her husband resided in a poorer area, and it is believed to have contributed too much of her artwork style. ‘The Survivors’ is currently displayed in two museums, the MoMA and the Kathe Kollwitz Museum. In the piece there is a woman directly in the middle, with sunken in cheek bones is draped in a black cloak. Her arms are around three small children, who look very frightened. On each side of her body there are an additional four small children who convey sadness upon their innocent faces. Also, they are outstretching their arms as if they are begging for her to give them something. In the background, on the top left side, there are two elderly men with their heads down, looking as if they are very sad and
Art is a form of expression. It can be created in many ways, and it can be destroyed in many ways. Art plays a very important in getting messages across. Art can be seen by hundreds and thousands of people. In the Chicano movement, art was everywhere. Art shows a sense of pride and honor. The artists that were involved in the Chicano movement really executed the message they wanted to tell. It will tell the story when people wanted change, they wanted to see a difference in the community they lived in so the future can have a chance that maybe they didn’t.
This sculpture seems to epitomize the ideal male human form. All of the body parts seem perfectly proportioned and the muscles are beautifully defined as if the image were of an athlete. The image is youthful with a calm demeanor. The right missing forearm looks as if it used to be resting at his side, while the left elbow was probably at a 90 degree angle, with the hand holding something. The slight bend in the left leg gives the impression of movement, as if the image was frozen while walking. The counterpoised stance adds an air of nobility to the "man".
of a figure from a single moment in time. All of the male sculptures appear in the nude
The Venus of Willendorf is one of the earliest sculptures of the body made by humans during the Paleolithic era. She was made from limestone native to her location and covered with red orche. Despite standing only 4.4 inches, the purpose of the Venus of Willendorf is widely debated. Some will say the exaggerated breasts, navel, and vulva connects her to fertility as a representation of a mother goddess. Others, such as those in my class, believe her to be a figure of body image. The stumpy female figure features hanging breasts, an obese middle and belly, and distinct buttocks in all, represents a realistic form of a severely overweight woman. Due to the hash ice-age environment of where she’s from leads one to believe fatness and fertility would have been highly desirable. Whether the sculpture was based on a fantasy or a real life model the infatuations with the idea of self-acceptance through body
a shift can be seen from idealized and nearly perfect sculptures to sculptures that had a natural and real feel to them. These newer statues were sculpted with the notion of Realism weighing more than the concept of Idealism. The subjects’ body was not in a state of military attention, they were placed in a more natural, yet still graceful position. Realistic sculptures also did not embellish the muscular physique of the subject; the muscle definition was displayed more subtly and naturally. The weight of Realistic statues is not distributed in a balanced, geometric fashion like the Ideal statues. The Realistic statues balance their weight just as a real person would in motion which gives the sculpture a more graceful and natural
Born in Beijing in 1957, artworks of Ai Wei Wei have created thorough debate in the contemporary artworld due to their controversial political criticism toward the physical manifestations of global power and Chinese social systems which undermine cultural integrity. Commonly reflecting his personal experiences of living through the Chinese Cultural Revolution in China, Ai’s use of historically significant objects such as Chinese urns, ceramics and bicycles which appear defamiliarized and displaced, act as conceptual symbols of cultural violence. ‘‘Forever’ Bicycles’ (2003) is an instillation which Ai composed using over 1500 steel bicycles, transforming them into an array of irregular shapes where the familiar objects are reworked into something
Marble Statue of Aphrodite, the so-called Venus Genetrix, stands shifting her body on one leg as though to make it seem she is about to step forward. Covered by a thin garment, it brings a form of illusion as if she is nude showing all the womanly curves of her body to be recognized. Although wearing such garment, one breast is covered while the other is shown to be bare. The bare left breast would seem to be an indication of what has to come of motherhood and the consequence of love. When it comes to the Figure of Isis-Aphrodite she is also standing, nude, and is dressed with elaborate jewelry pieces.
Chinese art went through many different stages starting from the year 1842. But the massacre of Tiananmen Square in the year 1989 was a turning point in the political life of China and in the country's art. Until the year 1992 art in China was underground, but it kept expanding. As a result of that, some Chinese artists started to do art works that rebel against their government and express their feelings towards China. One of these artists is the famous Chinese artist Ai Weiwei who expressed in each piece of art he did, his feelings that China should let its people break away from the rotten traditional, in order to express their thoughts freely.
Both the shape and body of the Reclining Woman sculpture totally tear down our standards as Golden Age Greeks. Not at all can I make out whom this sculptor is representing. Sure I can make out the basic female figure. However the head is way too small in proportion the rest of the body. Maybe Henry Moore has not yet finished this piece. Did he make a mistake in the development of the chest area? This could be the case. If still this is a finish piece of “art” in no terms by us Greeks' is this considered Art.
