African Americans: Unrepresented In Health Care

While reading the findings by Ford I can see a huge disparity in America. According to his research African Americans and Latinos seem to have more deaths for minor incidents then Caucasian Americans when treated for the exact same incidents. While doing research it seems that each race on average usually goes to the hospital about the same number of times. However African Americans and Latinos die for minor issues a lot more. This is usually the cause of not having health insurance and waiting until a problem has got to bad. For example African American and Latino women go to the doctor far less for annual checkups then Caucasian women. Thus if they had breast cancer for example they wouldn’t know until a later stage in the disease. Sadly, …show more content…

The reason blacks are the most unrepresented in health care comes from a variety of reasons. It could range from education, social class, to pure racism. Blacks on average die 3 times more than their white counter parts for the exact same procedure in hospitals (James 22). Some call this a coincidence, and some call it racism and discrimination at its best. Aside from that one main reason blacks aren’t getting the health care they need is because of education. Blacks aren’t nearly as educated as other races such as whites or Asians. Even races from foreign nations that come over seem to be more educated then blacks. Some could say it’s because blacks are lazy but some could say they aren’t getting the resources they need to succeed. In an area that is heavily populated by blacks and Latinos the school systems are clearly not given the same resources as rich white populated neighborhoods. This is a form of educational racism. The educational system purposely under educates minorities and sadly sets them up to fail. Some may ask how this has anything to do with the health care. Well I will tell you, if a person is under educated what is their probability of getting a good job? If a person doesn’t have a good job in today’s society can they truly afford to worry about their health or getting health insurance? Little thing that many people think are unrelated actually are related (Von 43). Finally, throughout my research I’ve realized that health care is seemingly only offered to a particular type of person. If you’re not employed or seemingly underemployed insurance companies aren’t willing to work with you to insure you (Ford 23). However, if you live in a wealthy area that is known to have a high value of profit you are usually targeted as good clientele. Thus, being black or living in a less valuable part of town also affects your
