Completed Work Task 1: Compare compact fluorescent light bulbs to incandescent light bulbs. In order to begin our research, we first had to prove that our current light bulbs are not the cheapest and not the most efficient choice to light up our buildings. Otherwise, it would have been useless for us to continue. We began our research using government documents, electronic books, and websites that compare incandescent light bulbs to other types of light bulbs. Ballast describes incandescent lamps as sealed bulbs which contain a filament and Argon gas. When current passes through the light bulb, the tungsten filament heats up and glows. This light bulb type is known to be cheap, small, and easy and fast to light. The major disadvantages of …show more content…
When the invisible UV light hits the coating of the bulb, the phosphor coating transforms the invisible light into light you can see. (U.S. EPA and U.S. DOE) There is no heating up of the filament, so the energy is usually not lost due to heat like when you use an incandescent lamp. The advantages and disadvantages of CFL will be researched in more detail in the next two tasks. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy ENERGY STAR® website provides a table, Table 1, which compares the two types of light …show more content…
According to Table 1, incandescent light bulbs claim to have a lifetime between 750 and 1,000 hours. Incandescent light bulbs will give us between 80 and 110 days of life. However, this is an imperfect world, and many factors such as temperature and vibrations of the surroundings can shorten the lives of light bulbs significantly. Let us assume that an incandescent light has a lifetime of three months. A burned out lamp costs our company money. When a light bulb goes out in a room, not only does the company lose money to replace that light bulb but the company’s efficiency decreases as well. The workers in that office have to stop their work to report the burned out light bulb, and our custodians have to stop their work for about 10 minutes in order to go change the light bulb. If this happens every three months in a period of two years, the custodians will have spent six hours replacing light
A glow stick is a self-reliant, instant light source. It consists of a translucent plastic tube containing secluded substances when combined can produce light. It does not require any extra external energy sources. The light cannot be turned off after it is “lite”, but it is said that glow sticks can actually be used again by putting it in the freezer overnight then cracking it once more. Glow sticks are used in many ways some for emergency settings, recreation, entertainment, and in the military because they are portable and easy to activate. If you have seen a glow stick you will know that it is quite fascinating how the tube lights up with the bright glow. But just how exactly is that possible?
The light bulb is the way we see in the dark, the way we find our way, the way we know when to go at a stoplight. How did Thomas Edison achieve this invention? Knowledge. Knowledge of electricity and the needs of those around him. In The Great Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan claims that she wants her daughter to be “a beautiful little fool.” In other words Daisy is saying that ignorance is bliss. Some others believe that knowledge is power. The advancement from candles to light bulbs changed the culture entirely. People could easily do the work they needed to after sunset, and it even led to more inventions. We need knowledge to advance, and for this reason powerful knowledge is more valid than blissful ignorance.
The light bulb changed how we lived now. Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, as he grew up he was learning so much knowledge for chemistry and electronics, and his 40 years of research to get the light bulb to work. Thomas Edison is an inventor of major technology. Threw his years he had studied many books by his parents and been reading many books on chemistry and electricity. The more he grew up he started to pursue his education on chemistry and electronics for many years. The more he tried to invent things he had help making of the light bulb with a group of scientists. Thomas Edison is the one who made the light bulb become possible by pursuing more education.
Some of his inventions include the photograph, the motion picture the electrographic vote recorder, and his most famous invention the light bulb. Thomas edison started working on his igea of a light bulb in 1878. He envisioned it as a oil and gas based light that would be longlasting that could be used indoors instead of having to use the outdoor light. He based his ideas on other people's inventions such as Henry Woodward and Mathew Evans. He found that there were many flaws with where light sources and planned on creating a whole different approach to building his light build that would fix all on the problems. Thomas Edison light bulb consisted of a carbon filament. It took him many tries before he successfully tested his lightbulb which lasted thirteen and a half hours. His carbon light bulb became a patent on November 4, 1879. Even though the light bulb was already patent Thomas Edison still found more ways to improve it. He discovered that carbonized bamboo filament could last 1,200 hours, so Edison decided to form the Edison Electric Light Company where he could publicly sell his new light bulbs and have access to new supplies where he can improve and manufacture his carbon light bulbs. Thomas edison created a whole new way of access to working and living environments that impacted history in a great
...sed using a spectroscope. Neon is often used in signs because of its production of an unmistakable bright reddish-orange light. Although still referred to as "neon", other colors are generated with the variety of noble gases and by various colors of fluorescent lighting. Neon is also used in vacuum tubes, high-voltage indicators, lightning arrestors, wave meter tubes, television tubes, and helium neon lasers. When Neon is liquefied it is commercially used as a cryogenic refrigerant and the lower temperature range becomes more attainable with more the extreme liquid helium refrigeration. Neon both as a gas and a liquid are relatively expensive for example; the price of liquid neon even in small quantities can be more than 55 times that of liquid helium. The reason for neon's expense is because of neon’s rarity which unlike helium, can only be obtained from the air.
It started with the British, with the arc lamp in 1835. For years after people around the world experimented on an incandescent lamp. They tried things like filling the bulb with gas but they did not last very long and they were very expensive. Finally in 1879, Thomas Edison made a bamboo filament (the part of the bulb that actually makes the light) that was able to last 1,200 hours. Lighting has changed over the years but some of the new inventions still were made in the 1800’s. Glassblower Heinrich Geissler and physician Julius Plücker discovered that they could make light by removing almost all of the air from a long glass tube and by passing an electrical current through it. They called it the Geissler tube. In the early 1900’s Peter Cooper Hewitt made the fluorescent lamp. While the Cooper Hewitt lamps were more efficient than incandescent bulbs, no one really used them because of the blue green color of the light. European researchers made neon tubes coated with phosphors (that made the light white). In the mid and late 1930s the U.S. was showing the fluorescent lights to the navy and at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. These lights lasted longer and were about three times more efficient than incandescent bulbs. In 1976, Edward Hammer at General Electric figured out how to bend the fluorescent tube into a spiral shape, creating the first compact fluorescent light
In doing so, their strong focus enabled the company to create significant innovations. Continuing on, Philips also became a leader in industrial research by creating physics and chemistry labs to address both production and scientific problems. The labs developed a tungsten metal filament bulb that brought great commercial success. Philips simple structure and significant innovations gave them the financial support they needed to compete in a time period where competitors were seeking major growth.

3) Stokes shift - Generally the emitted fluorescent light has a longer wavelength and lower energy than the absorbed light. This phenomenon is known as Stokes shift. It is due to the loss of energy between the time a photon is absorbed and when it is emitted.
For new or retrofit construction, every choice can lead to energy savings; energy that is derived primarily from fossil fuels. The typical household LED replacement for a 60w light lasts about 50,000 hours. Pretending that an incandescent could also last that long, it would consume about 3,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy whereas the LE...
This would make the employees to feel that they are not safe with the noise, the lighting or even the temperature. The reason because or the temperature they may feel that if it is to cold or to hot this can affect their health. For the bad lighting it may be because there may be something wrong with the wiring so there could be someth...
Traditional lighting equipment is designed around what’s called lumen output. LECs focus on wavelength, exposing your plants to more types of energy. These different light types also allow LECs to simulate the changing of the seasons. That diversity is helpful for plants because they evolved to take advantage of both shorter and longer wavelengths. As a consequence, your new hydroponic gardening lights will be perfect for both the vegetative and blooming stage of plant growth. Not only do these grow lights last twice as long, but they also provide a smoother
People will light up the candles and then leave them to burn for hours. People should not burn candles more than 2-3 hours at a time. “Candles caused 3% of reported home fires, 3% home fire deaths, 6% of home fire injuries, and 5% of the direct property damage in home fires” (nfpa.org). Many people light candles for many reasons, such as a birthday celebration, a romantic dinner or just to relax and enjoy the smell. However, some people do not pay attention to the candles after being lit. “On average, 25 home candle fires are reported per day. More than half of home candle fires occurred when some form of combustion material was left or came too close to the candle” (nfpa.org). Many people use candles when a storm takes out the electricity in a home. Candles are an easy way to have light but one should always remember to blow them out when done using them. Other ways to keep fire safe are never leaving a candle in the reach of children. Not only can it cause a fire, it can always cause severe burning of the skin. Placing a lit candle in the bedroom is risky because people fall asleep in there and can leave the candle burning. Christmas time is the most popular and busiest time of the year to purchase, display and light candles to use them as decorations in a home. Everyone should always be paying attention when candles are lit in the
He starts to investigate how to create a light bulb that can last longer. Before Thomas Edison started making the light bulb, there were other inventors working on it, but no one could let the light bulb work longer. Eventually, on October 21, 1879, Thomas Edison’s light bulbs could work for forty hours. Thomas Edison and his team try to use the incandescent light bulb in the laboratory and at home. In 1880, Thomas Edison believed the incandescent bulbs could be produced and sold to the public.
Light bulb is one of the most influential inventions in the word. It makes us work more productive at night and helps us enjoy more activities at night. It significantly change people lives all over the world. The born of light bulb also helped us by making more inventions that related to light, such as phones, televisions, and computes. By using light bulb, we actually reduced the probability of having fire accidents because if we don’t have light bulb, we will use candles instead which can cause fire easily. There are a lot more benefits we get from light bulb, and all of these are credited to Thomas Alva Edison.
