Moving across the globe to a country that is much bigger than where I’ve lived for the past seven years of my life was quite a petrifying experience for me. The combination of barely able to comprehend the language and the unfamiliarity of the mixed culture and history of this “land of opportunities” gave me a tough time during the transition from what I was used to my whole life into this “American” life. Nonetheless, moving to this country had opened up the door for me to many opportunities such as opportunities to learn something new or to take part of something impactful. Throughout my life, I’ve been a very curious individual. I like to tinker with things, figuring out how stuff work, and researching about fascinating science discoveries
In my younger and more vulnerable years, my parents and I immigrated from the Philippines to America in search of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It wasn't until I started maturing did I notice the obstacles I overcame, the accomplishments I achieved, and the objectives I set for myself that significantly contributed towards the achievement of my dream.
Unlike other people, I came to the US without any special reasons, except for the
Stepping out of my first plane ride, I experience an epiphany of new culture, which seems to me as a whole new world. Buzzing around my ears are conversations in an unfamiliar language that intrigues me. It then struck me that after twenty hours of a seemingly perpetual plane ride that I finally arrived in The United States of America, a country full of new opportunities. It was this moment that I realized how diverse and big this world is. This is the story of my new life in America.
Life sets out many pathways to decide your future. It can give you experiences and certain experiences in your life can impact you a lot. Immigration to America is often a decision made in order to discover a better life for a family or individual. America’s founding ideals are usually what compel foreigners to move to the US. The stories of America being the “Land of Opportunity” have continued to persuade people to immigrate. Although immigration in the 20th century is much different from recent immigration, the underlying reasons for moving to the US are usually quite similar.
My leadership and group problem solving skills have also been strengthened by my trip. When faced with decisions I feel I can look at both perspectives. My ideas seem to reflect a broader dimension by having experienced a different culture. On my next journey to Italy I believe I can promote a better understanding of Americans.
In the beginning of September 2005, disappointment and excitement revealed on my face when I boarded the plane to move to the United States of America. The feeling of leaving my families, friends, school, clothes, and culture in Cameroon presented a hardship for me on this journey. Of course, I anticipated this new life because it indicated a fresh start. I envisioned it resembling life in movies, where everything appeared to be simple and life was simply excellent. All things considered, I was heading off to the United States, known for the American dream. To me it meant that everyone is given equal opportunity to prosper, achieve a family, and attain a successful job as long as they are hardworking and determined. I felt exceptionally honored and blessed to have this open door since I realized that it was not provided to everybody. Coming to America denoted my transitioning on the grounds that I deserted my previous lifestyle in Cameroon, began a new chapter in my life once again, and finally became a much grateful individual.
Moving to a different country at a young age can be a challenge, especially when most of my friends and family are not coming with me. I moved to the United States when I was eight years old. When I landed in Michigan in 2006, everything was new to me, the culture, the language, and the people. Coming to America was cultural shock to my system.
Some life lessons are better to be learned at an early stage at life and for my situation it’s good that I did. I learned that one should never depend on others when it comes to doing your own work. You have to work hard to get what you want, you can’t just wait for others to do it for you. This is one of the toughest lessons I learned and it’s good that I learned it. Although, it was tough for me the way I learned it.
As I progressed through middle school, I began to realize what was being taught to me in school, was not all the information out there for us to learn so I began to search random article on the internet. I was a curious person ever since I came America because back in Nepal, I always thought Nepal was the biggest country in the world. I would hear about other countries here and there, but I didn’t really had the chance to learn about them. Traveling from one camp to another cam would almost take up the whole day and hearing about other cities within Nepal felt like Nepal was the big country. Therefore, when I came to America, I realized there is so much out there that I can learn from and the best part of them all was studying everything from
There are so many opportunities here in America, and with those opportunities comes many challenges and chances. After interviewing 19 year old Jeremiah Fagen I gained lots of knowledge about the life and culture of Kingston, Jamaica. I found great interest in interviewing Jeremiah because Jamaica is such a well known destination vacation area that hundreds of people travel to while I personally have no knowledge of the actual culture and what it is like to permanently live there. I also was intrigued because Jeremiah is the same age as myself and I found it quite fascinating to hear the story of someone the same age as me moving to new countries on their own. I found great importance in this interview because personally I have never left Ontario let alone the country, so to hear the story of someone making such a drastic change in their life and learning
