The Joy Luck Club, by Amy Tan, is a novel which consists of stories about the lives of four Chinese immigrant mothers and their American-born daughters. The stories are about each of the character’s struggles adapting to American society and how it affects each individual's personalities to the person they have become. This process of adaption is seen through one of the daughters named Rose. Rose’s inability to make decisions is due to her fear of the future responsibilities she has to hold if misfortunes occur. This part of her personality is shown through the events that impacted her such as her brother’s death as well as her marriage and divorce with Ted.

Rose believes that their marriage is based on the roles they were playing for each other; she is the victim while Ted is her hero. They both have an emotional effect that comes out of this and that is what keeps their relationship steady. Rose is so dependent on Ted that she pushes aside all of her own opinions and lets Ted decide what was best for the both for of them.“Over the years, Ted decided where we went on vacation…We used to discuss some of these matters, but we both knew the question would boil down to my saying, ‘Ted, you decide.’ After a while, there were no more discussions. Ted simply decided. And I never thought of objecting.” (119). Rose is putting all pressure on Ted by letting him make all the decisions and she does not think of speaking up even when it might be needed. When Rose does make decisions, she tends to lead herself into thinking that there too many possible outcomes in making one , “I thought about things, the pros and the cons. But in the end I would be so confused, because I never believed there was ever any one right answer, yet there were many wrong ones. So whenever I said, ‘You decide,’ or ‘I don’t care,’ or ‘Either way is fine with me,’ Ted would say in his impatient voice, ‘No, you decide. You can’t have it both ways, none of the responsibility, none of the blame’” (120) Ted is telling Rose to start making decisions and …show more content…

Ted decides to file a divorce with Rose and sends the divorce papers to her. Rose sees the papers and tries to decide how to handle the situation.“I sat there quietly, trying to listen to my heart, to make the right decision. But then I realized I didn’t know what the choices were. And so I put the papers and the check away, in a drawer where I kept store coupons which I never threw away and which I never used either” (191). Just like the store coupons that she never used, Rose decides to put her divorce papers and check away so she does not have to decide whether to sign it or not. After she puts them away, thoughts about the divorce fill her head. “There were too many choices, so it was easy to get confused and pick the wrong thing. That’s how I felt about my situation with Ted. There was so much to think about, so much to decide. Each decision meant a turn in another direction” (191). Rose thinks about all the ways that this situation can turn out if she cashes in the check that Ted has given her. She has a thought that maybe the reason Ted is giving her the check is because he still loves her and cares for her. Instead Rose realizes that the check meant nothing to Ted just like how she meant nothing to him. This shows how Rose is scared of the negative consequences of making a decision. Rose does not want to be easily conflicted and have to suffer the responsibility.
