“OPENING NIGHT…
…IT’S OPENING NIGHT!
IT’S MAX BIALYSTOCK’S LATEST SHOW.
WILL IT FLOP OR WILL IT GO?
THE HOUSE LIGHTS ARE DIMMING,
THE FOOTLIGHTS ARE BRIGHT,
THE TOAST OF SOCIETY’S BURNING TONIGHT!
WE’RE SO EXCITED WE CAN’T SIT DOWN…,”
the Usherettes sing in the Broadway Musical, The Producers, written by Mel Brooks and
Tom Meehan. With every new show, there is always competition to be the best show.
Since the tender age of six-years-old, I have performed in over fifty stage productions.
Out of those productions, I have done a New York City World Premier, tours, regional
theatre and many other types of theatrical demonstrations. I would like to continue my
hobby as an occupation. To continue with my thespian career, what do I need to make
this goal come true?
An actor is a person who performs on a stage or on the screen. To be a thespian
takes time, patience and talent.(Actors; Yehling)
Several people believe the misconception that acting is not a respectable
profession. Where in fact, apart of being a thespian is understanding that people won’t
give them the full respect they deserve. Another important part of being an actor is to feel
good about what their doing. In addition, to feeling good about yourself you need to,
“interpret life through the window of your own life experiences.” (Yehling) Although
jobs are very scarce, it helps to do a show that has good material. To increase the chances
of getting employed professional training is imperative. According to Careers in
Acting eighty-six percent of non-equity actors receive training of some kind. Before a
production begins, an actor must memorize all lines and cues for the first rehearsal. Once
in rehearsal for a show, it is now even more critical to spend numerous hours on their
own time to go over blocking and songs.
“EVERYTHING IN LIFE IS ONLY FOR NOW.”
(Avenue Q) Unlike regular jobs that you can stay in for a lifetime, acting jobs are usually
short-term. The average chorus job could last for around five months. Lead roles however
could last for sometimes years. For most jobs you go to interviews for the job, for acting
you attend an audition in a very nerve-racking environment.
Nevertheless, in the author’s note, Dunbar-Ortiz promises to provide a unique perspective that she did not gain from secondary texts, sources, or even her own formal education but rather from outside the academy. Furthermore, in her introduction, she claims her work to “be a history of the United States from an Indigenous peoples’ perspective but there is no such thing as a collective Indigenous peoples’ perspective (13).” She states in the next paragraph that her focus is to discuss the colonist settler state, but the previous statement raises flags for how and why she attempts to write it through an Indigenous perspective. Dunbar-Ortiz appears to anchor herself in this Indian identity but at the same time raises question about Indigenous perspective. Dunbar-Ortiz must be careful not to assume that just because her mother was “most likely Cherokee,” her voice automatically resonates and serves as an Indigenous perspective. These confusing and contradictory statements do raise interesting questions about Indigenous identity that Dunbar-Ortiz should have further examined. Are
Most people that work in theatre have a pretty good idea of what a stage manager does during rehearsals - at least, the things that can be seen. We take blocking notes, cue lines, keep track of the time, coordinate presets and scene changes, answer the questions, and solve the problems. Yet, there are so many things a stage manager does, so many balls constantly being juggled, that many elements of the stage manager’s job go unnoticed. So, in honor of the unseen, here is a sampling of some tasks a stage manager completes before rehearsal. Early in our morning, we check our phone.
The women who asked the last question went on to defend her stance and would not budge on her viewpoint. Being respectful, Howe did not pursue a fight. In another city on the tour, a woman “brought a Choctaw” dog so Howe could meet it (67). It’s apparent that these individuals did not read her book because they did not understand the concept of the “Live Indian.”

Transmedia concepts are different than previous types of storytelling, involving creating content that engages an audience using various techniques to permeate their lives. To achieve engagement, transmedia develops stories across multiple forms of media in order to deliver pieces of content via each channel. These pieces of content link together (overtly or subtly), but in narrative synchronization or porposeful a-synchronisation with/to each other ( Jenkins, 2006).
Good acting relies on a kinesthetic, an intrapersonal, and an interpersonal intelligence, all of which work together to form a creative expression. There exist limitless styles of acting; there is always something to learn.
Al pacino said, "The actor becomes an emotional athlete. The process is painful - my personal life suffers". In other words, "Acting is simply more than walking out on the stage" as Dr. Stevenson would put it. It is more than just reading the lines. To be a true actor, I believe it takes inner capabilities such as learning life. In all the books I have read, all the chapters we have reviewed in class, and in all honesty…Al Pacino is an actor I cannot forget.
When someone “friends you” on Facebook, it doesn’t automatically mean that you have some special relationship with that person. In reality it really doesn’t mean that you now have the intimacy and familiarity that you have with some offline friends. And research shows that people don’t commonly accept friend requests from or send them to people they don’t really know, favoring instead to have met a person at least once (Jones). A key part of interpersonal communication is impression management, and some methods of new media allow people more tools for presenting themselves than others. SNSs in many ways are podiums for self-presentation. Even more than blogs, web pages, and smartphones, the atmosphere on a SNS like Facebook and Twitter enables self-disclosure in a focused way and permits others who have access to ones profile to see their other friends. This merging of different groups of people that include close friends, family, acquaintances, and friends of friends, colleagues, and strangers can present issues for self-presentation. Once people have personal, professional, and academic contacts in their Facebook network the growing diversity of social media networks creates new challenges as people try to engage in impression management
An actor is not just a person who goes on a stage and performs their play. The actor’s profession consists of various other things; when you show yourself on the screen and try to make the audience, not only to like you, but love you, you have to invest yourself in the profession. Leaving the stage, doesn’t mean you forget about everything until your next performance, you have to live with your profession. Every actor becomes a role-model for someone, every young child and even adults have a role-model, they look up to. The life you live and the things you say will affect your followers’ life as well, creating scandals and being delinquent will push your followers to that direction as well. It is normal for the Screen Actors Guild to look not only for a person, who plays exceptionally well but follows the guidelines of a
actors may be satisfied with doing lower budget films and local theater productions. Hearing various perspectives from “successful actors”, directors, teachers, and labor bureaus doesn’t matter if the actor is impressed with what he or she is doing. And training can help an actors chances, but it’s not guaranteed.
Pretend you are a parent. You are at home and you see your child acting in a hostile and aggressive manner. You ask him where he picked up on this behavior. He replies, “I saw it on Television.” Television violence had a role in the child's behavior. Media violence can have a lasting impression on children, teenagers and adults not only through television, but also through video games. In the past two decades, there has been a significant increase in violent behavior in the United States (Merino 1). This is the result of exposure to violence. More than half of television programs and video games contain some type of violence. Perez Daly says, “’... children are likely to see 8,000 murders and at least 100,000 other acts of violence prior to leaving elementary school at age 12 years. ‘” (1). Exposure to media violence leads to aggressive behavior in children. With the right information about media violence, video games violence, and how parents can decrease aggressive behavior, people will understand the major effects violence can have on behavior.
As the people who find the right actors for plays, TV series, adverts and films, they stand between every young actor and that big break. As an actor friend told Dan: "Casting directors are the gatekeepers. If they don't know who you are, it can feel impossible to get a decent part. Dan tells me that casting for a musical takes about six weeks. "We send a breakdown of the characters we need to a number of agents – usually between 200 and 300. Within a day or so, hundreds of envelopes arrive back. We divide them into characters and go through every resume, deciding who to call." For a major show, Dan might receive 1,000 resumes; from these, he'll choose around 500 performers for the first round of auditions, then whittle those down to a shortlist of "recalls". These last auditions are usually attended by a show's director, who will make the final
unemployment; competition for roles is often intense. While formal training is helpful, experience and talent are more important for success in this field. Because of erratic employment, earnings for actresses are relatively low.
When it comes to rehearsals, no one has a bigger commitment than stage actors. For stage actors, rehearsals can last for several months to a year, in extreme cases. This gives an actor more time to develop his character, study his or her lines, and build great chemistry with their cast. As an actor, I realize the importance of building chemistry with your fellow actors within the production because once it’s time to perform; the audience can see the genuineness and the
I can use transmedia to ‘expand’ and ‘explain’ the ‘parallel stories’. In my documentary, I just cut fifteen seconds short footage about Hua Xia Sunday service. I have time limit on the main documentary and I choose not to spend a long time on ‘go to church’. However, I still want to introduce to my audience the importance of it and what is actually means by Sunday service once they become interest in Christianity. Different from Western countries, many Chinese do not have much knowledge about religion as Chinese government promote atheism in the
