My version of the American Dream is the opportunity to live a life of success and prosper through hard work and determination, which I still believe can be achieved in today’s world but it is very hard to achieve for minorities. Growing up as a child of an immigrant, I was always told to work hard and if I did success would follow me. As I grew I watched as my parents worked so hard to provide for me and my siblings. They would always tell us stories of their struggle of coming from nothing and getting an education to become successful. My parent’s story and other relative’s stories of coming to America for a better opportunity and being successful is a great inspiration. This anecdote is truly an inspiration to many people trying to achieve the American dream. It also shows that the American Dream is achievable through hard work and determination. By having told this story, John Green shares with his followers how the American dream can still be achieved just as I view it to be achievable as well. Although I feel as if the American Dream is achievable for many Americans I feel as it is harder for the minority group in America to achieve the American dream. According to the article, “Racial, gender wage gaps persist in U.S despite some progress”, as of 2015, white men had higher hourly earnings than all races except Asian men. Racial discrimination in workplaces, about 21% of black adults and 16 % of Hispanics say they were treated unfairly due to their race or ethnicity (Patten). With a pay gap and a lack of opportunity due to race or ethnicity, many minorities in America have a disadvantage when it comes to achieving the American Dream.
