In Nigeria, they have a different cultural from what people in America have and some of the traditions that they celebrate demonstrate that. But one of the things in the culture of the Nigerian Ibo tribe is the view and abuse of women. In the book "Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe, the way that the women were treated and how they are seen shows that there is not much respect for them. Okonkwo abuses his wife out of anger and the only time that he got in trouble was when he abused his wife during the week of peace which is a time that very should be kind and respectful so that the spirits will be happy and give them a good harvest. Nigerian women are still being abused just because they are women and are seen as something less important than what they are. Not even the civilization and western education have changed the way the men see women and how they deserve respect and dignity. Women are still seen as something inferior to men "and are therefore treated in manners undeserving of human beings. In Nigeria and Africa generally, women are considered as tools to be used by men. They are regarded as objects to be used for pleasure, temptation, and elimination. In Nigeria, a man will beat his wife and nothing will happen, instead, they will expect her to go on her knees and beg him" (Cultural Violence and the Nigerian Woman 370). So the way that women are treated in the book and in real life is not that different. They are still seen as a tool that they can control and use in any way that they want to without getting in any trouble. Instead, they expect the women to beg for forgiveness and come back to him without hesitation. In both reality and in "Things Fall Apart" it shows that women need to be treated better, with respect, that they should have dignity. They don't deserve to be treated worse than animals, they are humans and being a woman should not be a reason to be treated without
