In the play Macbeth created by William Shakespeare, we are subjected to an ambiance of the relationship between corrupting power and ambition. As we read it seems that the character Macbeth is a good man. It doesn’t feel like he would give into dark temptations, but we know that he wishes to progress in power. In Act 1 scene three lines 50-53 we see the three witches telling Macbeth that he will become the next king. Not only does this spark an interest in power but also in his wife Lady Macbeth. In Act 1 scene 5 lines 72-73 a quote is given by Lady Macbeth, “Look like the innocent flower, but be the serpent under it”. Macbeth giving into his dark temptations agrees to participate in Lady Macbeths plan to kill the current king Duncan. After the dark deed had been done he acted the way he had been told, to try and keep the suspicions away. The murder driven by twisted ambition had left Macbeth and Lady Macbeth in a state of uneasiness. But because the three witches had said Macbeth would alone be king, now being corrupted by the want for power Macbeth strives to erase everything that should prevent him from becoming the new king. If he had ignored what the three witches had said to him he would still be alive. His wife who also wanted power killed, but could not accept what she had done like Macbeth did. The guilt became too heavy for her to bear and ended up crushing her in the end. Macbeth overcoming his guilt let his lust for power take control. He acted without any consideration for anyone but himself and let the power of a king to lead him to what he thought he truly wanted. His twisted ambition led to power that could only be described as corrupt as he killed thinking that it was the only way to obtain
