In Genesis 17, when Abraham was ninety-nine years old, God appeared to Abraham and said, “Your long years of waiting is now over, you and your legal wife Sarai will be proud parents of a sons.” As normal to man who is walking toward his coming death the news is humorous that made him laugh. The age of about to be 100 years old at that time is same in ours today, it is highly impossible to happen. This is the reason why Abram laugh.
In Genesis 16–17, the narrator uses Abram’s age to indicate a break between two stories. The first story concludes by noting that “Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael” (Gen. 16:16). A new story opens in Genesis 17:1 with the words, “When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to

(vv.19-21) IV. God extended the covenant only to Abram's true son
(vv.23-27) V. God espied the obedience of Abram in circumcision
1. Direct statements by author, or indirect statements through a character:
God appeared to Abraham and said, “You and your wife are going to be the proud parents of a son.” And the response of Abram was to fell down and laughed. Why? He and Sarai were ready to find the best place for their grave and not to prepare diaper. It was same situation to our current situation- it will be impossible for one hundred man to be father except with the option of adoption. The long discourse of God to Abram was for him to be satisfied that the Lord will fulfill His promises to him.
• God introduced Himself to Abram in the name of “I am God Almighty" or El Shaddai (v.1) in the original language that emphasizes His mightiness.
• The two characters changed their names as condition in the covenant from Abram to Abraham (v.5) and God as the El Shaddai (v.1)
• Repetition of the phrase "I will establish My covenant between Me and you (v.1 and v7) which both stated by God to Abram that indicate that God is the one initiated the

2, 4, 7 (x2), 9, 10, 11, 13 (x2), 14, 19 (x2), 21) and it was all from the declaration of the Lord to Abram.
• Circumcise/d was used eleven times within the chapter (vv. 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 (x2), 23, 24, 25, 26, 27).
• Circumcision was recorded in two significant modes using significant time indicators. Having the phrase, "God said further to Abraham (v. 9)" first, we can see that it was a command given by God to Abraham (9-14). Lastly, with the phrase "Then Abraham (v. 23)" Abraham followed the command of God that resulted for him and his entire household to undergo circumcision (23-27).
- The Lord is the God Almighty or El Shaddai- The Lord appeared to Abram bearing this name for Him after the thirteen years of Abram fatherhood to Ishmael, who was not the promised child for him and Sarai. God as El-Shaddai speaks of His sufficiency for all things at all times. The Lord appeared and identified Himself to Abram after thirteen years with this name that came with the command “walk blamelessly” (v.1). The word Shaddai means one who nourishes, supplies, satisfies connected to the word El for God, best be translate as "One mighty to nourish, satisfy,
An example of the use of scriptural and biblical quotes or the connection of God in their writings is provided in the “Second Inaugural Address” when Abraham Lincoln states,
As is it recorded in the book of Genesis, Chapter 17 Verse 7, God establishes an everlasting covenant with Abraham and his descendant to be their
“The Lord saw that the wickedness of humankind was great in the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of their hearts was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that he had made humankind on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. So the lord said, ‘I will blot out from the earth the human beings I have created-people together with animals and creeping things and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.’ But Noah found favor in the sight of the Lord.”(Genesis 6:5-8)
One day, Abram had a vision. In the vision God tells Abram to leave his father’s house which is today’s Iraq, and travel to a place that God will show him. God said that if Abram who becomes Abraham obeyed this command, his descendants would become a great nation, and that he will bless thee,...
In Genesis 16, Sarai told Abram to have a child with Hager, slave of Sarai, and Hagar conceived. However, Sarai dealt harshly with her, and then she ran away. Keep going, in Genesis 17, God made a covenant with Abram and renamed him Abraham. He renamed Sarai Sarah and promised them a son. Moreover, the god said, “You shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you” (11). In my opinion, the reason why the circumciser could be a sing of covenant is cutting of flesh is kind of sacrifice because it bring a lot of pains and inconvenience. And the remaining human flesh after circumciser looks like a making offering to the god. In Genesis 21, as promised, Sarah had a son: Isaac. She had Hagar and Ishmael sent away but God preserved them. Abraham and Abimelech made a treaty. In genesis 22, I find a connection between previous chapters and today’s reading. The god tested
Male circumcision involves the process of amputating the foreskin so that the glans of the penis is exposed. (2:602) Nontherapeutic male circumcision has been performed over many centuries and it is an integral part of some religions and cultures. The World Health Organization reports that 30% of males globally are circumcised, with 70% of these being Muslim. (3:1) The prophet Muhammad proclaimed that all followers must circumcise their sons on day seven postpartum. Although not all Muslims follow this exactly, males are circumcised within the first 10 years of age and it is one of the factors of the customs in Islam that allow for personal hygiene. (4:76) Judaism also values circumcision as an important part of the religion. As is described in the Old Testament it is one of the prerequisites to becoming a great nation that Abraham undergoes circumcision, and that every male be circumcised on the eight day of life. (4:76) Although Jesus Christ himself was circumcised, his disciple Paul proclaimed that this act is no longer necessary, thus circumcision is no longer a part of Christianity. (4:76) In addition to religious incentives for nontherapeutic circumcision, cultur...
Circumcision has been a religious practice in many different cultures, ranging from Africa to the Middle East, and to Asia. While prevalent in both Jewish and Muslim societies, the earliest known documentation of circumcision comes from Egyptian hieroglyphics discovered dating back to 2300 BC. While the reason behind circumcision is currently unknown, many theories exist as to attempt to explain it origins. One theory persists that that circumcision started as a way to release the body from sin, and purifying both the individual and the society, as sexuality was seen as dirty and impure, and the removing of the foreskin would reduce sexual pleasure. In Abrahamic faiths, Jewish and Muslim, circumcision is practiced as a way confirm one 's relationship to God, and is stated in the Torah, as the covenant between God and Abraham, “This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee: every male among you shall be circumcised. " While two of the earliest form of Christianity, Coptic Christian, and Ethiopian Orthodox
The Binding of Isaac Rosana Gutierrez 205: Biblical Texts Dr. Nina Henrichs-Tarasenkova. 3-15-2024 INTRODUCTION In this essay I will be outlining my close reading of the text from Genesis Chapter twenty two, section one through nineteen.
One day God spoke to Abraham with an intention of making a covenant with man whom he chose as his partner. Abraham was told by God to leave his home to a different land since the people of Ur worshipped idols of wood and stone. The covenant made between them had a lot of promises. Abraham left with his wife Sarai, Lot his nephew,
Chapters 12-32 in the book of Genesis explores about the life of Abram and Jacob. Chapter 23 in the book of Genesis is all about Jacob's spiritual life. Genesis chapters 12-32 shares related events between the time of Abram and Jacob. One of the related events in the Genesis Chapters 12-37 is an event of hour of decision. Jacob involved in an hour of decision when he wrestled with an Angel of God and after he overcome him, the Angel urged Jacob to let him go but Jacob made a decision not to let him go until he told him his name.
Repetition is also the concept that the Hebrew Creator-God uses throughout the story of Genesis to educate Abram about God's purpose and His nature. God is aware of the doubtful and cynical nature of Abram. Over time, God uses Abram's own repeated mistakes to build a conceptual understanding of Himself for Abram. This model provides Abram with a relevance for God in Abram's own life. Though the classic view depicts the patriarch Abraham as blindly, obedient, there is significant evidence within the story of Abraham to show that he was not so naturally submissive. The text often depicts Abram as doubtful, indignant, and sarcastic to a fault. Taking this side of the text in context illustrates Abraham as the antagonist in a battle against God. In this struggle with God, Abraham achieves excellence by learning, through repetition of his own errors and the reinstatement of God's promise, that it is in his best interest not to fight against his own personal idea of God, but to recognize, respect, and accept the true will of God.
God calls Abram while he is in Ur. He commands him to leave the country with his family to a land God has chosen. He promises to bless Abram and make his descendants form a great nation. This promise will be fulfilled in the Mosaic Covenant. God makes a promise to bless Abrams personally, and also promises that his name will be well known. This promise will later be fulfilled in the Davidic Covenant. God will bless anyone who blesses Abram, but will place a curse on anyone who attempts to cur...
There are more than two different levels of biblical interpretation; however in this paper I am going to be focus in two of them which are historical-literal and theological-spiritual. In Genesis 3: 1-7, "The Fall of Man" shows something happen that forever changes our world. Before the beginning of chapter 3, the end of chapter 2 explains the relationship between the Lord, Adam, and his wife Eve. In contrast, in Genesis 3, there was a sin that changed the world we live in recently. Religious scholars and theologians have debated over whether it is the devil or a choice to guilt that led all humans to be sinful on
The book of Genesis 1-11 gives us a teaching and lays a foundation for the truth that is expressed later in the bible as it makes an assumption that God is the creator of the universe and all it holds. The scriptures in this books gives an expression of God as being just, love, wrath, holy and grace. This scripture enables us to understand how we should view the world and God’s part in the creation and the recreation of the whole universe.
This verse suggests that the children of Israel gave a special and different pledge to God, however the verse doesn’t specify exact time and place. It might have happened after the Primordial Covenant, God might had selected children of Israel and took from them a separate covenant, similar to the prophets’ covenant. Ubbay b. Ka’b had added a new Covenant known as “Latter Covenant” . He explained the first covenant is the primordial covenant while the other covenant is the “Latter Covenant” that occurs during lifetime of humans through the conscious application to the first Covenant. Thus all humans are born universally equally with the recognition to obey God according to the primordial covenant the nature state of all mankind is known as fitra. Contrary to the Sunni perspective, the Mu’stazili Shii believed that the Covenant, didn’t occur in physical representation as was described by Sunni exegetes; it took a symbolic form whereby God didn’t talk. God had cleared in Quranic verse that humans had their first life when they were in their mother’s womb conflicting with the Sunni perspective, whereby God will bring humans to life twice during the covenant and in their mother’s womb . Taking into consideration both perspectives, it is possible that God had gathered humans by their souls and took from them The Primordial Covenant, then brought them to life in their mother’s womb, this had been accepted by most exegetes. The Mu’stazili Shii diverge from Sunni exegesis, by stating that the Covenant was given to particular descendants of Adam connected to those who had polytheist fathers . This covenant raises questions about the prophet Mohamad’s primordial substance as described in other hadith ,“I was a prophet-stated Muhammad- as soon as Adam was between spirit and body” hence Mohammad was the
