People are always debating whether or not abortion should be illegal. However, abortion should be legal because it will lead to illegal abortions which are dangerous, it being illegal goes against women’s rights and it is a great solution to rape and other circumstances. Today, abortion is one of the most commonly performed clinical procedures in the United States. Women should have the option of abortion which they can then decide to partake in or not. In 2013 alone, state legislatures enacted 70 laws restricting abortion access, ranging from bans on abortions at 20 weeks post fertilization to limitations on insurance coverage for abortions ("Should the Government Be Able to Stop a Woman from Getting an Abortion?"). Restrictive abortion laws have a devastating impact on women’s right to life. Evidence suggests not only that restrictive abortion laws drive women to unsafe abortion, but that women die from the consequences of such abortions. “Approximately 13 percent of maternal deaths worldwide are attributable to unsafe abortions” ("Q&A: Human Rights Law and Access to Abortion."). It is generally much more expensive to treat complications from unsafe abortion than to provide medically safe abortions. When women are sentenced to prison for having got an abortion, this constitutes an assault on women’s right to liberty, because women essentially are jailed for seeking to fulfill their health needs. The right to liberty is also threatened when women are discouraged from seeking medical care if they fear being reported to police authorities by doctors or other medical professionals who suspect unlawful behavior. The U.N. Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women has repeatedly urged governments to review their laws to suspend penalties and imprisonment for those who voluntarily induce abortions.
