My Explorer is Abel Tasman, and did you know that he was the one that discovered the Fiji islands! Or did you know that he was one of the people that tried to help the Philippines during their time of war with the Spanish. Abel Tasman was born on 1602 or 1603 in Lutjegast, Groningen, The Netherlands. He had 2 wives, the first wife named is Claesgie Hex and they also had a daughter named Claesjen, but unfortunately Claesgie died, so Tasman decided to have another wife, her name is Jannetje (Joanna) Thaerts. Tasman was not just an explorer and a navigator, but he was also a Dutch seafarer and merchant. He wanted to explore, because he was in service to the Dutch East India Company. Tasman traveled to Asia, Tasmania, New Zealand, Tonga, Fiji
islands, Indian Ocean, Australia, south pacific, Australia, and South Pacific Ocean. Abel experienced some attacks his crew member were in and there were diseases that you can get, so some of his crew members also died and got ill. Some good things that Tasman did for the islanders is by helping to command a trading fleet that was heading for Siam(Thailand). Then, he went to the Philippine to help the them while they were at war by trying to capture a ship that was controlled by the Spanish. He was also kind to the islander and responded to them, the islanders of Moordenaars Bay. Some bad things that Tasman did to the islanders is by using their muskets and cannons to attack back at the islanders of Moordenaars Bay. They fought with the natives of Ceram, so 3 of his men were killed, and one was wounds. Also attacked the people of Spain and their ship, because they were attacking the Philippines. I learned that Abel Tasman was a Dutch navigator, explorer, seafarer, and merchant. I felt he was a good man who did was right for the islander and helped some of them. Overall Tasman was a great explorer who discovered many islands, collected information about other islands that made him gain rewards from the Dutch East India Company, and had a good background with a wife and a child.
His first voyage took place in 1598 with his uncle. He was on his own for his next trip which lasted 2 years. He was in France from 1603 until 1607. They then found some West Indians that
At the age of thirteen he boarded a ship to Whitehaven, which was a large port across the Solway Firth. There he signed up for a seven year seaman's apprenticeship on The Friendship of Whitehaven, whose captain was James Younger, a prosperous merchant and ship owner. His first voyage took him across the Atlantic Ocean to Barbados and Fredericksburg, Virginia at which he stayed with his older brother William, a tailor, who had left Scotland for America over thirteen years before, and who now was living comfortably and flourishing.
When you think your average baseball player, what do you think of? The player usually has all of his arms, legs, and no physical disabilities. Anyone who plays baseball would think it is hard to imagine that a person born without a right arm is able to play the game and let only be able to be a pitcher. Jim Abbott faces all the odds and has ten-year career in the major leagues. Abbott had to faces many obstacles throughout life and his playing career. Jim Abbott grew up being picked on since he didn’t have a right arm. When Abbott was younger he would use a steel hook as right hand and other children were afraid of him. Also, they called him names like Mr. Hook.
He went on voyages to Southeast Asia, Sumatra, Java, Ceylon, India, Persia, Persian Gulf, Arabia, the red sea Egypt, and the Mozambique Channel.
the West Indies, England, Ireland, Wales, France, Portugal, Italy, Central America, Georgia, Virginia, Philadelphia and New England. It seemed that he traveled everywhere except to where he really wanted to go, which was Africa. It was during these years that he learned the English language and values from a seaman by the name of Richard Baker.
Supporters of the Age of Exploration believe James Cook was an example of a great explorer and a navigator. In his text/lecture “Cook’s Third Voyage”, Encyclopedia argues that in Hawaii he fought with the Hawaiians during his third voyage in 1779 and died leaving a legacy. Cook mapped lands from New Zealand to Hawaii, the great Barrier Reef of Australia, and the Pacific Ocean. He had a superior surveying and cartographic skills, physical courage and an ability to lead men in many different conditions. Based upon this research, it is clear that James Cook is significant because he’s a great seaman. This evidence supports
In times of the golden age the VOC (United East Indian Company) the Dutch were well known by their trade. They had ships and trading posts all over Asia and Africa. Still they were looking for shortcuts to sail much faster to their home harbours. The shorter they have to sail with their load the more profit they could make. To find new and faster ways to sail to the east would be great so they started to explore the see’s to find these shortcuts and make new routes to sail for trade.
Francisco Pizarro served on an expedition, which he discovered the Pacific Ocean. Henry Hudson was an English Explorer born in 1565, he is known as one of the most famous explorers.
Christopher Columbus had two main motives for trying to find a sea route around the world to Asia. Columbus’ first reason was that he wanted the fame. He believed that the earth was round and according to his theory, the earth was only 18,000 miles in circumference (Symcox, 9). He believed that it would be faster to sail around the world to Asia than sailing around Africa. He wanted to be the first person credited for sailing around the earth to Asia. Columbus also wanted to make a name for his family. The second reason Columbus wanted to sail around the world was simple. He wanted to make money. Columbus’ want for fame and fortune drove him to create a sea route to Asia.
In 1606 Smith wanted to join the colonization of Virginia. The expedition had 3 ships with 104 navigators (the Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery.)
I have served with Scott, Shackleton, and Mawson, and have met Nansen, Amundsen, Peary, Cook, and other explorers, and in my considered opinion, for all the best points of leadership, coolness in the face of danger, resource under difficulties, quickness in decisions, never-failing optimism, and the faculty of instilling the same into others, remarkable genius for organization, consideration for those under him, and obliteration of self, the palm must be given to Shackleton, a hero and a gentleman in very truth.
Did you know that William Dampier was the first person to circumnavigate the world three times. He was born at Hymerford House in East Coker, Somerset, in 1651. He was baptised on 5 September, but his actual date of birth is not recorded. He was educated at King's School, Bruton. William Dampier was Australia first natural historian. Dampier married Judith around 1679, then left for the sea a few months later. William explored for England and was one of the most important british explorers.
Were there any other explorers who may have come across the Americas before Columbus? What caused Columbus to have such a vast impact on the society? This investigation will go further into the aspects of why Columbus’ name is widely recognized and how he had a tremendous impact, when there is evidence that suggests there may have been other explorers who had previously stumbled upon what Columbus is claimed to discover.
