Abel Field and 2 other guys were arrested because of suspicion of a bank robbery. The 2 other guys plead guilty but Abel Field plead innocent. One of the guys named Ehle wanted to testify against Abel. Abel said he wanted to impeach Ehle’s testimony by testifying against the guy named Mills. Mills was not involved with the robbery but he had been in prison with Ehle and that Ehle told him he was going to lie about Abel in his testimony. The prosecutor wanted to prove they were all a part of the Aryan Brotherhood and try to get Mills to lie under oath to prove he isn’t credible. Abel objected and said that the use of the term “Aryan Brotherhood” was unduly prejudicial. The prosecution then agreed to use the term “secret prison organization”
Abel Fields was convicted for bank robbery along with two other men. While two men pled guilty, the respondent decided to plead innocent. Ehle then agreed to testify against Fields at the trial, to further incriminate him. From there, the Respondent called Mills to the stand. Although Mills wasn't involved with the robbery, he had spent time with Ehle in prison. Mills stated that while in prison, Ehle admitted that he would falsely testify against Fields for favorable treatment. The prosecution brought Ehle back to the stand to testify against Mills’ Credibility. Ehle stated that they all had belonged to an Aryan Brotherhood gang and they had all sworn that they would lie to help out a fellow gang member. The trial court allowed this testimony. In addition to his statement, he included that if he were to disclose and/or accuse another member of any crime could have an outcome of possible death.

The money was paid to Olson's family on schedule.

In the novel, he acted like an innocent person because he claims he doesn 't remember murdering the Archbishop. When he was questioned about the murder, he stated that he witnessed someone else murdering the bishop. What followed was truly shocking, he revealed having symptoms of multiple personality disorder. In a case with a mentally incompetent person would be proven innocent and set free. Aaron succeeded in proving that he was a schizophrenic person, however this was all a sham. The scheme was that Aaron was to make it believable that he was mentally incompetent. This showed Aaron’s true unethical character, he was dishonest, manipulative, and he lacked integrity. Aaron portrayed the illusion of a mentally ill person, a character Martin told him to play in order to win the case. Aaron got away with the satisfaction of murdering the Archbishop and fooling Martin into believing he was innocent.
