Abdul Hakim and his wife Mehwish became famous throughout India after sharing their struggles of inter caste marriage in Aamir Khan’s famous ‘Satyameva Jayate’. Abdul, five months after appearing on TV was shot dead in his village on November 22nd 2012. Abdul Hakim, 28, and his 26-year-old wife Mehwish, both Muslims hailing from families with different social standing, had been living under the protection of an NGO in Delhi . Hakim and his wife, who is nine months pregnant, went to meet his ailing mother near Adoli village in Bulandshahr district. He was shot there, while on his way home from the local police station. The couple, who were neighbours at Adoli, fell in love and ran away together two years ago after marrying secretly in June 2009. According to Mehwish, her family was opposed to the match because Hakim was poor and belonged to the 'lower' Fakir community. Hakim's father was earlier allegedly killed by Mehwish's family in the village, although it was shown as suicide in police records. "The couple was scared even before coming to the show," Aamir Khan sai...
Waleed Aly uses several features of language to convince the viewers to his perception through appealing to emotions and logic. He includes inclusive and emotive language to ensure that the issue plays on the reader’s feelings, addresses everyone and makes it appear more significant than it actually is. For example, “I’m sickened by the violence” or “I’m crushed for the families that have been left behind.” He incorporates a hyperbole which exaggerates and overemphasizes the crux of the statement to produce a grander, more noticeable effect. Through the phrase “We’re all feeling a million raging emotions right now” Aly creates a larger-than-life effect and overly tensions his point. Another technique is a call to action, “We all need to come
On February 23, 1993, James Swann began his attacks on Washington, D.C area. His first attack occurred on Holmead Place NW. He stuck his 20 gauge shotgun out of the driver side window and started to shoot at a woman walking home. She escaped without being shot. The same night about 15 minutes later on 1400 block of Oak Street NW, a 22 year old man was shot in the face and was partially blinded. His shooting was dismissed because of objectivity. On February 26, 1993, three days following the first shooting a man burst in a barbershop and murdered a customer with his shotgun. This was James Swann’s first slaying. Once again, police brushed the case off assuming it was drug related. James too a very brief rest from his crimes, however, on March 4, 1993, he returned to Washington and his victim was a 43 year old man walking down the street. He was shot in the head, but to be consistent the police assumed it was drug related. Police did not take the previous shootings serious until the drive by shootings continued in an upscale neighborhood in Mount Pleas...
The cover of this autobiography is stunning and interesting. The lay-out of this non-fiction is put together nicely and they play a significant role in displaying this novel. The pictures in the book bring the whole piece to perfection; they give a visual to what the author is writing. They are appealing to the text and fascinating to look at. On September 15th 2001, 4 days after the worst attack on American soil, a Sikh owner of a Chevron Gas station in a Phoenix suburb was murdered by a gunman. This was one of the first major cases of violence against Sikh-American in wake of the attacks. The 42 year old gunman Frank Roque killed 49 year old Balbir Singh Sodhi because he was lashing out at "Arabs" after watching repeated footage of World Trade Center attacks on television. When Mr. Roque was being arrested he repeatedly shouted "I stand for America all the way." NewsFeed Timeline A History of Violence against Sikhs in the Wake of 911 Comments. (2012). When I was in High School, my history teacher once said to me, “history is written by the victors.” In other words, those who win, decide how they will be remembered. For instance, the history of the United States and their interactions with Native Americans. Old (bias) history textbooks will tell us you how the white European “discovered” America and saved the native “savage” from himself or herself. However, this old way of thinking, only allows us one perspective. We never hear the Native Americans’ point of view. This is why historians, and the work they do, are so important to our society. Historians depend on evidence to develop a narrative and arguments about the past. Yet the arguments that they develop are strictly based on the primary
Interestingly enough, both Soraya and Amir have lived a life of luxury and privilege because of the ethnic background, religion, status and income. Nevertheless, the married couple has the most difficulties feeling acceptance and support from their fathers. Hassan lived in a small hut, had few toys and had the very evident appearance of a boy living in poverty. Through all of the difficulties that both Hassan and his father, Ali, faced, the love was apparent. (quote quote
“Friend by Day, Enemy by Night” shares an in depth look into the lives of the Kohistanis who live in Thull, Pakistan. The author of the text, Lincoln Keiser, goes into great depth in explaining the life of these people before and after mar dushmani. Mar dushmani can be directly translated as “death enmity.” This social relationship between the Kohistanis causes for many problems. As a general principle death enmity allows men to retaliate whenever another man wrongs them, though the act of revenge itself should not exceed the original wrong. The example stated in the book is, “a blow should answer a blow and a death answer a death.” For such offenses as attacks on men through their wives, sisters, and daughters retaliation usually occurs in deadly violence. Killing the offender is considered the most appropriate response. Although violence usually takes place during retaliation, it is not the only way to handle it.
A Taliban leader said that if girls did not stop going to school within a month, there would be repercussions. Instead of capitulating, this proclamation only made Yousafzai more passionate and courageous. She continued to attend school, despite the numerous threats and causes for fear. As an education activist, she was in more danger than most of her classmates, so it was not safe for her to walk anywhere, instead she had to take a car or bus. One day, while aboard a school bus with her classmates and friends, two men entered asking which girl was named Malala. The other girls looked at Yousafzai which unintentionally gave away her location. The men shot 15 year old Yousafzai in a defining moment in history. This not only had consequences for her and her family, but it also had consequences for the citizens of Pakistan and people living around the world. This was a turning point because people began to realize that the Taliban would target anyone with opposing views, even teenage girls.
“Earlier that morning, when I was certain no one was looking I did something I had done twenty-six years earlier: I planted a fistful of crumpled money under a mattress.” (Hosseini 242) He also tries to find Hassan himself. But upon arriving, Rahim Khan tells him that Hassan and his wife have been murdered by the Taliban. “Hassan protested.
Farida’s appearance showed she was highly involved with her culture and strictly religious. Hakim’s appearance showed he was struggling to become a businessman. For instance, Samir left emotional after hearing about his “cold” cooking compared to the “magic” and quit his stable, financing job with the idea of going to Paris. In addition, when Arbak offered his assistance and wise experience to help Hakim’s restaurant, Tandoori Palace, Samir’s emotions were once again brought out and followed by an unnecessary insult directed towards Arbak.

In “The Argument of Design,” William Paley argues that the universe has a designer. The need for an intelligent designer is portrayed through his comparison between a watch and the human eye. In this paper, I will critically evaluate William Paley’s argument by giving a brief summery of the content I will be focusing on and discuss how I believe that his arguments are not valid.

textbooks and discovers that the feud between the Pashtuns and the Hazaras dates back to the nineteenth century; during this time period the Hazara rose up against the Pashtuns and tried to overthrow them. However, their efforts were futile and they were mercilessly defeated. Ever since the failed coup, there has been bad blood between the Pashtuns and the Hazara. As a result, one's caste became a master status in Islamic society. For example, Baba’s father took in Ali after his parents were killed by a drunk driver. Which resulted in, Baba and Ali becoming very close almost like brothers. However, Baba never called him a friend because Ali was a Hazara. Moreover, based on the history of the Pashtuns and the Hazara it would have been socially
Hakum Chand was one of the characters of the book responsible for the expulsion of Muslims. He didn’t actively involve himself in an expulsion of Muslims; he wanted to remove them to keep the peace. His intentions were never laced with malice, but rather complacency. He encouraged Muslims to submit to the commands of the police. His philosophy was that even if you feel strongly about a topic, you should keep silent on the matter. In situations where it is better to speak up like this one, Hakum Chand gave the dangerous advice to keep silent and take what life threw at you.
