By Jonas Wilson, Ing. Med. What are abdominal adhesions Bands of scar tissue that join two parts of tissue together that would otherwise not be physiologically joined together constitute adhesions. These abnormal connections have a plastic wrap appearance. They appear like thin sheets or thicker fibrous bands. Adhesions develop when the repair mechanisms of the body are triggered by events such as trauma, infection, radiation or surgery. They may occur anywhere in the body. However, they are most commonly found in the heart, pelvis and gastrointestinal tract. When cells responsible for repairing organ damage go to work, they typically do not distinguish between one organ and another or different parts of the same organ. Hence, any contact between the part of the organ damaged with …show more content…
Almost everyone who undergoes an an abdominal surgery may develop adhesions. These connective bands of scar tissue tend to become larger and tighter as time passes and consequently may cause problems several years after a surgery was performed. Tissue incisions, contact of internal tissues with non-biological agents like gauze and the dehydration of internal organs during surgery are just some of the reasons why adhesions may develop after an abdominal surgery. Intestinal obstruction leads to the build of food, fluid and gas in the intestines, which can cause rupture of the intestines once the pressure has built up enough to do so. The leakage of harmful intestinal contents into the abdominal cavity, if left untreated, can be fatal. Female infertility occurs when abdominal adhesions inside or in the vicinity of the fallopian tubes block eggs from reaching the uterus. These women are at an increased risk for an ectopic pregnancy, which is a pregnancy where the fetus attempts to grow outside of the womb. This is a potentially life threatening condition for the pregnant woman if hemorrhage
Dr. Nolen's purpose for writing "The First Appendectomy," which speaks about his first execution of an appendectomy, was to inform. Dr. Nolen writes explains the procedures in performing an appendectomy and the possible complications that can and did occur during his first operation. Dr. Nolen informs readers that, “There are five layers of tissue the abdominal wall: skin, fat, fascia (a tough membranous tissue), muscle
Today, for achieving a flat and firm abdomen, many of us strive for intensive weight loss and exercise. However, in some cases, these methods fail to achieve the desired goals. A loose, protruding or sagging abdomen is also witnessed in individuals with normal body weight and proportion. The reasons may include weight fluctuations, aging, heredity or any prior surgery. Sometimes, large weight loss or multiple pregnancies may cause weakening of abdominal muscles. As a result, the skin in that region becomes stagging.
When a fertilized egg is released from the ovaries, the female menstrual cycle begins, then that’s when the inner portion of the female womb is more likely to become dense and broad in preparation for gestation (Freudenrich 2015). In addition to the menstrual cycle, there are a few diseases that affect the cycle in human females. One of the various diseases is menorrhagia, which is the excessive blood flow in the system. Hormone inequality and pregnancy complexity can cause menorrhagic disease. Hormone inequality is the expansion of the endometrium caused by the heaviness of bleeding (Mayo Clinic 2014).
However, these side effects can be avoided with the proper amount of vitamin and mineral supplements. Up to 20 percent of patients who undergo the operation will require follow-up surgeries to correct complications. Common problems include abdominal hernias, breakdown of the staple line and stretched stomach outlets. There’s rapid regain of weight and all sorts of medical problems. From vitamin deficiencies to constant illness, stomach upsets, diarrhea, fatigue and horrible wound infections. Many people don’t want to admit they’ve had problems because they’re so happy to be thin; “People who have had the surgery the past couple of years are in a honeymoon state”, states Guthrie, Catherine. The author of “Bariatric Surgery: A Radical Obesity Fix. They is so thrilled to be thin. They believe being thin at all costs is more important than their own lives. Even if the patients have problems although these are some complications, most patients undergo only one surgery and there's an 85 percent success rate.
The exact cause of this disease is unknown, but there are a several explanations as to why this occurs. One explanation is retrograde menstruation. This is where menstrual blood containing endometrial cells flow back through the fallopian tubes and in the pelvic cavity instead of exiting the body. The endometrial cells stick to the organs and pelvic walls. They continue to thicken and bleed with each menstrual cycle. Another explanation for endometriosis is embryonic cell growth. If one or more of the abdominal lining becomes endometrial tissue, endometriosis can occur. A third explanation could be an immune system disorder. A problem with the immune system could make the body unable to destroy endometrial tissue that grows outside the uterus.
Endometriosis occurs when endometrial cells grow in areas outside of the endometrium, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or other pelvic regions. This ectopic endometrial tissue promotes an inflammatory response that produces the clinical features of the disease. The condition likely occurs due to various factors such as abnormal immunity, alerted hormone signaling, and genetics.
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a complex series of procedures used to help those who want children but struggle with infertility. The process consists of extracting eggs from a woman and collecting a man’s sperm sample then manually combining them in a lab dish. Once the embryo(s) are created they are transferred to a woman’s uterus. IVF is commonly used in woman who cannot conceive on their own due to different reasonings. “These include but are not limited to blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, male factor infertility, woman with ovulation disorders, genetic disorders, woman who have had their fallopian tubes removed and unexplained infertility.” (American Pregnancy)
First, let’s define Infertility? Infertility is the inability to conceive from unprotected sex within a year. According to National Infertility Association(NIA), approximately 1 in 8 couples in the U.S-about 10-15% experience infertility. Infertility doesn’t discriminate against gender or race, therefore, it impacts both men and women equally, and that range from ages 15-50. In addition, any fertile individual could experience this condition, therefore, one can develop it later in life. This condition is shared by about 6 + million women in the U.S. and about 3-4.7 million men were diagnosed in with infertility, including 14% sperm/semen and 6% varicocele, which is an enlarged vein inside the male scrotum, pouch that holds the testicles of a male, therefore this blocks the blood from through the blood stream.
Endometriosis is a condition where the endometrial tissue that lines the inside of the uterus is found outside of the uterus. Endometriosis is found on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, the lining of the pelvic cavity, and the outer surface of the uterus. Other sites are the vagina, cervix, vulva, bowel, bladder, or rectum. In some rare cases it can also be found in the lungs, brain, and skin. Endometriosis effects an estimated 10% of all women during their reproductive years. This is about 176 million women, who have the symptoms of endometriosis. (Reference) Even though growths of endometriosis are benign they still cause many problems. Once a month, hormones cause a woman’s uterus lining to build up with tissue and blood. If the woman does not become pregnant, the uterus sheds this tissue and blood. The tissue and blood leave the body through the vagina this is known as a menstrual period. In woman with endometriosis the tissue and blood that is shed into the body during menstruation can cause pain, inflammation, and scar tissue. When the endometrial tissue grows, it covers the ovaries and can block the fallopian tubes. Trapped blood can form cysts. It will also form scar tissue and ...

Thick cervical mucus, cervical polyps, amenorrhea, uterine abnormalities, vaginismus, smoking and drug use. Also, female infertility may be caused by structural disorders of the Fallopian tubes, uterus, hormonal imbalances, or problem with the cervix. Physical occlusion of the Fallopian tubes, structurally preventing the egg and the sperm from meeting. Sometimes when the Fallopian tubes are blocked it is preventing the egg and sperm from passing through. In 20 percent to 30 percent of infertility patient it 's because of imbalances of the hormones. The hormonal imbalances can cause ovulatory disturbances and spontaneous abortions specially in the first
Another risk is an ectopic pregnancy; these aren’t as common but occur in every 1 in 50 pregnant mothers. It occurs when the fertilised egg implants outside the uterine cavity. This unfortunately needs immediate destruction of the foetus.
We have all heard stories of a friend or family member trying to conceive but failing at it for unknown reasons. They spend years, thousands of dollars and many tears only to still not conceive. Then, the woman is finally given the diagnosis of endometriosis. Based on statistical evidence and studies endometriosis is the leading cause of infertility in woman of reproductive age. Not only is it a devastating diagnosis but also an extremely hard disease to diagnosis. At times getting misdiagnosed and ignored by medical professionals. Leading to more years of pain for the woman suffering from a very debilitating disease.
Health complications can occur during pregnancy with the woman or the fetus. During pregnancy, a woman can have an ectopic pregnancy, which is where the fetus develops outside of the uterus. While giving birth, a woman can risk her life if she encountered any difficulties. A fetus can develop birth defects, for instance, down syndrome, as well as diseases and infections. If a fetus’ has a life-threatening illness, a mother may decide to end the pregnancy so the baby does not have a painful life. However, a doctor may say the baby may have birth defects, but the baby can be born perfectly
Some infections can also affect the health of a woman's eggs and make it difficult for her to release an egg at all. When this is the case, the woman will not be able to conceive and medical attention will be required.
