Identify three areas in which counselor competence is addressed in the ACA and the AMHCA Code of Ethics. The ACA code of ethics address areas of a counselor competence in Section C2 of the code. Section 2.a boundaries of competence addresses “counselors practice only within the boundaries of their competence, based on their education, training, supervised experience, state and national professional credential, and appropriate professional experience” (ACA Code of Ethics, pg. 8). Section C2.c qualified for employment addresses “counselors hire professional counseling positions only individuals who are qualified and competent for those positions” (ACA Code of Ethics, pg. 8). Section C2. f continuing education addresses “counselors maintain their …show more content…
competence in their skills they use, are open to new procedures, and remain informed regarding best practices for working with diverse populations” (ACA Code of Ethics, pg. 9). ACA code of ethics Section C focuses on professional responsibility which addresses how we as future counselor can maintain a level of competence as counselors. The AMHCA code of ethics address areas of a counselor competence in sections I, III, and IV.
Section I focuses on the commitment to clients. Addressing the counselor-client relationship, counseling process, counselor responsibility and integrity, assessment and diagnosis, and other roles. Section III focuses on commitment to students, intern and employees, and commitment for clinical supervision. Section IV focuses on commitment to the profession addressing teaching, research and publications, and service on public or private boards and other organizations. What areas from the Code of Ethics do you feel need your attention in building your competence, given your current status as a graduate student? As a student, I feel the area in which I need to attend to in building my competence is counselor- client relationship not so much from my perspective but from my client’s perspective. I believe it’s due to my demeanor, engagement, and interactions with the client which makes them view me more as a friends or family member than counselor. I continue to work on new strategies and changing the way I interact with my clients. While continuing through this graduate program I hope to develop different strategies and approaches to help me adjust and improve my counseling skills. Are there self-care challenges you may need to address to be fully effective and competent as a
counselor? I feel one self-care challenge is going to be separating myself the different issues I’m going to be dealing with. I do not want to become numb to the issues and lose focus on the therapeutic process. American Counseling Association. (2014). ACA Code of Ethics. Alexandria, VA. The messaging in both the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) and Canada’s Health Informatics Association (COACH) Code of Ethics are very similar. They both discuss prioritizing privacy and security, set an expectation of maintaining a professional and collegial work ethic, encourage the continuing of education and building of one's knowledge base and both refer to a focus on the awareness of future developments/advancements within the industry. My initial preference was the CHIMA Code of Ethics as I preferred the phrasing and third person approach, however, upon further review I noticed that CHIMA’s used the word ‘strive’ instead of COACH’s approach of ‘I will’. This to me seems to have less impact then the COACH counterpart.
Which of the six principles in the AICPA Code of Conduct is most related to Article 1.5 of the California Accountancy Act? Explain your conclusion.
It is important as a professional health care provider to have guidelines, regulations, and ethical standards to obey when providing care to the public. The ACA is to improve the quality of professional counselors in the community with education, knowledge, and guidelines by providing an ACA Code of Ethics standard when delivering treatment toward a clientele (American Counseling Association, 2015). One particular part of the ACA mission that is essential, is the ACA Code of Ethics. The purpose of the ACA Code of Ethics is a guide to ensure counselors in training and professional counselors understand the ethical obligations toward clients, possible grievances for conduct unbecoming, and professional responsibilities, which supports the ACA
The accounting system misallocated motors from the asset manufacturing equipment to inventory. There are issues of honesty, responsibility, and professional ethics.
The first provision of the American Nurses Association’s (ANA) “Code of Ethics” states, “ The nurse, in all professional relationships, practices with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth and uniqueness of every individual, unrestricted by considerations of social or economic status, personal attributes, or the nature of health problems.” The second provision states, “The nurse’s primary commitment is the patient, whether the patient is an individual, family, group, or community” (Fowler, 2010). As nurses we need to respect the autonomy and allow for the patient to express their choices and concerns. We also need to provide them with support by giving them knowledge and understanding so they
The American Counseling Association is the largest professional counselor association in the world and serves over 56,000 helpers by providing resources and tools to utilize for best practices in the counseling field (ACA, n.d.). As an ACA member, professional counselors have access to professional journals, webinars, forums and other mediums that can strengthen and enhance helping skills and best practices. It would be of great advantage for both graduate students training in a counseling field, as well as professional counselors working in their field to take advantage of the being a member of the ACA.
Mandatory ethics is the level of functioning where the counselor is abiding by the basic “do’s and don’ts” of professional counseling. These are definitive codes that will protect a counselor from legal action and professional censure. All mental health professionals will be held accountable by the minimum standards set by state licensure boards and courts of law. Issues addressed by the Code of Conduct of the American Psychological Association (APA) include, but are not limited to, competence, human relations, confidentiality and fees. (American Psychological Association, 2002)
Ethics is the judgement and the moral actions used in interactions with cultures and society and its focus is on the client well-being. Ethics is defined by Remley and Herlihy (2010) in the counseling field as “professional behavioral and interactions” (p.4). Counselors do rely and are guide by Codes of Ethics. The role and relevance of the ethical principals, the ACA and AMHCA Code of Ethics are the base of the counseling profession. Without them this career would not have a guide on how the professionals should act and react professionally in all the different situations that are faced in this field.
Sometimes individuals consider becoming counselors after overcoming some major life challenge such as addiction or a history of bad relationships. Perhaps an individual has encountered a particularly effective counselor or therapist and has a desire to follow in those footsteps. Others may have had a bad experience with counseling and concluded that it can be done better. People do not think of this work so much as a job, or even as a career. More typically, a constellation of life experiences that demand explanation and a sense that others seek one out for assistance and emotional sustenance become driving forces leading one toward the counseling profession” (An invitation to). .
This paper will discuss the following 4 Core Functions of a Counselor: Case Management, Client Education, Crisis Intervention, Referral and their primary purposes.
The Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors (2017) last updated the scope of practice for Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC) in 2010 and defined counselors as applying mental health, therapeutic, and developmental principals to facilitate development and change through prevention, assessment, evaluation of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. Counselors in Texas achieve congruence through evaluation and assessment, establishing goals, forming and implementing treatment plans utilizing counseling, assessing, consulting, and referring. In the Introduction of section B it states, “Counselors recognize that trust is a cornerstone of the counseling relationship. Counselors aspire to earn the trust of clients by creating an ongoing partnership, establishing and upholding appropriate boundaries, and maintaining confidentiality. Counselors communicate the parameters of confidentiality in a culturally competent manner.”
Ethics play a vital role in day-to-day living from work to home. The ability to recognize ethical dilemmas and apply ethical theories to resolve ethical dilemmas is essential part of an individual 's psychological, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. The purpose of this paper is to explore the strengths and weakness of the American Psychological Association (APA) code of ethics, apply and evaluate the eight-step ethical decision-making model, discuss the role of deontology in ethical reasoning, resolution, and multicultural issues in the case study.
The ACA Code of Ethics (2014) states that “sexual and/or romantic counselor-client interactions or relationships with current clients…are prohibited.” (Standard A.5.a.). Fiona clearly breached the professional and ethical boundaries by engaging in an inappropriate sexual relationship with her client. Additionally, she did not adhere to the principle of nonmaleficence that reflects the idea of avoiding actions that could harm a client. Fiona completely neglected her therapeutic role in order to satisfy her personal desires. It seems that the counselor got involved in this action willfully, so we can assume she knew it would be in violation of the ACA ethical standards and possible negative consequences, that include a risk of lawsuit for negligence,
