In this chapter, the main character Eddie; finds himself in the setting of beautiful mountain ranges. Eddie goes through yet again, another change. He realizes he is now older, fatter and his knee is an pain. Eddie finds a diner and observes all of the customers within, who seemed to all originate from different decades. Eddie, observing the diners patrons, sees his father through one of the windows. Eddie then tries to grasp his father's attention, however he is unable to. The tale flashes back to Eddie’s 24th birthday within the hospital. Joe, Marguerite, Mickey Shea, Eddies father and mother all come to visit him. They all celebrate Eddies birthday by singing to him, except for his father. Meanwhile, Eddies father is not even close with the rest and is not paying attention to him at all. The story then takes place back to the settings of the mountains, where Eddie is outside the dinner from where he sees his father and he meets with an old woman. The old woman guides Eddie away and describes the story of how she met her husband, their engagement and how her husband created an amusement park for her. The amusement park is called “Ruby Pier,” and is named after the old woman’s name: Ruby. Posterior of the war, Eddie struggles through serious distress and nightmares on the night of his 34th birthday. Eddie arrives at home from his occupational job as a taxi driver, and Marguerite surprises Eddie with some food to eat after coming home. Then the baker, who lives downstairs of Eddies apartment, comes to eddies apartment to inform him that something terrible has occurred to Eddies father. Ruby fills Eddie in of the pier catching on fire, how her husband becomes wounded, and how they moved the from Ruby Pier. Ruby notifies Eddie that her presence here in heaven; is to inform Eddie, why his father passed away. Eddie then remembers the passing of his father and following
