What defines a real man? Elbert Hubbard, an American writer and philosopher, once said, “The stronger a man is, the more gentle he can afford to be” (Good Reads). In other words, a true man sets an example to others through his actions with gentleness, strength, and character. David Malter, from The Chosen, by Chaim Potok, set an example to his son as how a real man would act. Faced with difficulties, David steadfastly persevered and displayed patience and care to his son. In The Chosen, David Malter demonstrated diligence, wisdom, and love.
First, David displayed a strong work habit in his job. Employed as a college professor, David worked strenuously at his position. Although he faced his own and his son’s health difficulties, David continued to work persistently without complaint. After spending the whole night writing an article, David taught a class during the day, attended a meeting shortly afterward, and rushed to see his son in the hospital right after (Potok 92). Throughout different areas of Reuven’s life, David supportively guided him with his knowledge and experience. For instance, when Reuven responded to Danny’s actions with anger and hate, David patiently chided him and encouraged him to demonstrate love. He told Reuven, “when a person comes to talk to you, you should be patient and listen. Especially if he has hurt you in any way” (68). In the same way, David, with his mature insight, urged Reuven to befriend Danny. David quietly explained to Reuven, “I am not talking only about liking him. I am telling you to make him your friend and to let him make you his friend” (79). Ultimately, David’s insight turned out accurate and Reuven and Danny became close friends.
