There are lots of ways to describe a book. One of those ways is a “timeless classic” But to be able to label a book a “timeless classic,” one must know what a timeless classic is. Many focus on how characters change and what type of message is conveyed throughout the novel. These two pieces of criteria are evidently shown throughout Harper Lee’s novel. “To Kill a Mockingbird” is a sufficient timeless classic because it succeeds in showing a dynamic character which has evident changes throughout the story, and conveys meaningful messages that teach and enlighten the reader.

One evening, Atticus gets Scout to read with her, but she says that she doesn’t want to go back to school, explaining to him how Miss Caroline told her never to read with Atticus ever again. Then Atticus says, “‘First of all,” he said, “if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of [view until] you climb into his skin and walk around in it.’” (Lee 39) Now, one would think how this has anything to do with social awareness, but the phrase “climbing into one’s skin and walking around in it” means learning how to see things from another person’s point of view. If one just assumes how another thinks, the result will not be very good. But if one looks at things from another person’s point of view, the result will be much more satisfactory than guessing thoughts. Scout struggles, with varying degrees of success, to put Atticus’s advice into practice and to live with sensitivity and comprehension toward others. When Atticus gives Jem an air-rifle to go shooting birds, he tells Jem to never kill a mockingbird, as it is a sin. Scout gets confused by this, and goes to ask Miss Maudie. Everyone goes through different changes as they grow up. Maturing, coming of age, and doing the right thing are important themes in Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird. This theme is most often seen in the character Jeremy “Jem” Finch. He portrays this theme when he begins to enter puberty and becomes a young man. Jeremy starts to become more independent, wiser and more able to comprehend adult situations; Jem begins to get a better grasp on things. Other characters that demonstrate this theme are Jean Louise “Scout” Finch, and Arthur “Boo” Radley. Harper Lee shows how Scout comes of age in similar ways to Jem. Scout begins to grow up and become more tolerant of others by “putting herself in another person’s skin”. Boo displays his “coming of age” in a somewhat different way than Jem and Scout. There’s a scene in To Kill A Mockingbird where Boo has the chance to do the right thing by putting himself in harm’s way in order to save lives, and he takes the chance. To Kill A Mockingbird is a book that is overflowing with the theme “coming of age” (whether it is shown through the main character or others). This theme is important to the story because these characters are a small example of the changes that Maycomb needs to undergo. In the beginning of the story, Jem enjoys the childish games of fantasizing about Boo Radley, taking any dare, and . Scout tells the reader that Jem becomes more and more moody as the story progresses, due to his aging. He thinks more; he shows more compassion; and he is appalled by the unfairness that rears its ugly head in his hometown. While Scout recounts the events of her childhood, the reader fails to notice that “To Kill a Mockingbird” is not a story about the narrator (Scout) maturing, it is actually about Jem maturing, and becoming an adult.

To Kill A Mockingbird tells a story about two young kids named Scout and her older brother Jem Finch growing up in their small, racist town of Maycomb, Alabama. As the years go by they learn how their town and a lot of the people in it aren’t as perfect as they may have seemed before. When Jem and Scout’s father Atticus defends a black man in court, the town’s imperfections begin to show. A sour, little man named Bob Ewell even tries to kill Jem and Scout all because of the help Atticus gave to the black man named Tom Robinson. Throughout the novel, Harper Lee illustrates the central theme that it is wrong to judge someone by their appearance on the outside, or belittle someone because they are different.
To Kill a Mockingbird is regarded as a classic also due to the timeless moral values it holds dear. The words of others should not dictate personal values, using educated thought is crucial before acting and finally, statements should not always be acknowledged as truth until you are able to authenticate them for yourself.
As a child grows, many people influence their development as a person. Some people impact more than others, and a select few really leave their mark. Among them, Miss Maudie Atkinson, a woman who proves herself a strong character, prevails as the one who has the greatest impact on Scout Finch, the protagonist of this novel. The attitude of the whole town is that Tom Robinson, because he is black and,".all Negroes lie,.all Negroes are basically immoral beings,.all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women. During the book Scout and Jem are at an age where people around them greatly affect their thoughts, views and ideas about the world. Although Atticus tried to raise them to treat Negroes as equals, people around them affected their views on them. A good example is when Dill questioned the seemingly rude way in which Mr. Gilmer treated Tom Robinson. Scout replied by saying, ".after all he's just a Negro. " (Lee 201). She believes it to be acceptable. This is not something her father put in her head but people in her town. The same also happens in the black community. When Atticus asks Calpurnia to watch his children for him while he is out, Calpurnia accepts and takes the children with her to church, a church for black people. When she arrives with the children, both races have done is shun the other race, which just keeps creating problems. There are many people in the novel who are affected by rumors and misjudging. One is Dolphus Raymond, who is thought to be committing a great sin by having children with a black woman. The town does not look down on him, the town actually feels sorry for him. The town does not know the real story; they base their feelings on misjudging and could never. understand that
Over all, the characters in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee have grown and matured throughout the whole novel. Boo’s maturity development is shown when he faces his fear of being with the outside world, Aunt Alexandra having some difficulties facing prejudice but, becoming more accepting of others, and Scout developing and learning lessons that she could apply to her everyday life. It shows that no matter whom the person is or what their troubles are, they all grow and mature in their own unique ways.
One of the first lessons taught in Mockingbird is the power of understanding other people’s perspectives. Jeremy Atticus Finch (aka Jem) from To Kill a Mockingbird is viewed as a “regular” kid who is immature and innocent to the “real world”. Since Jem is still young, he has not gone out on his own in the world and had to fend for himself. He has not seen the “real world,” therefore Jem does not understand that life is not always fair. This view of the world is clouded by his innocents. Jem, although going through the death of his mother, does not completely understand how life can be. Jem’s eyes finally start to open up to the true, harsh world after witnessing the verdict of “guilty” in the Tom Robinson court case. In seeing this injustice, Jem begins to mature more, his innocents starts slipping away, revealing how to world is.

For instance, when Scout queries Atticus about Maycomb’s prejudice perspective, he tells her, “You never really understand a person until…you climb in their skin and walk around in it.” (Lee 30) Even during the early stages of the novel, it is apparent that Atticus endeavors to instill the values of empathy and tolerance within Jem and Scout by teaching them how to have multiple perspectives on a situation. In addition, Atticus also attempts to enlighten his children about peaceful resolution in society. For example, when Atticus is chosen to defend Tom Robinson, Atticus tells Scout, you might hear some ugly talk about it at school but…you just hold your head high and keep those fists down.”...
