Desdemona is a stunning, youthful, white, Venetian debutante. She is her father's pride and joy, but she refuses to marry any of the rich, handsome Venetian men that her surroundings expects her to spend the rest of her life with. Instead, she elopes with Othello – an older black man, an outsider to Venetian society. Turns out, this is a pretty intrepid move – Desdemona not only defies her father's expectations (that she marry a white man of his choosing), she also thumbs her nose at a society that largely disapproves of interracial marriages. In this way, Desdemona's relationship with Othello speaks to the play's concerns with Sixteenth Century attitudes about sex, gender, and race. Desdemona withholds many attributes to the play Othello by Shakespeare. She leads on a perfect life, as the perfect woman, but will it last forever?

She is loyal and trusting, innocent and pure, and her inner beauty is only matched by her outer experience. Desdemona represents many characteristics throughout the play Othello. The attributes of one such as Desdemona appear to be the perfect qualities that a woman can possess. Yet it is these same seemingly wonderful qualities that turn against their host, blinding them to the realities of society. Her trust in her husband does not allow her to see the beast he has become. Her loyalty to her friends blurs how the relationship may be seen from outside sources. Overall, this “perfect” Desdemona leads herself to her death, yet has no knowledge of doing so while on her life's journey. She leads on the perfect life, but in the end shows to every extent, that not everything can last forever. Not even your own loyalty to a relationship can last forever.

A woman whose intention was never to hurt, Desdemona was the bravest and strongest Venetian (ven-ee-shen) beauty who was loved by all and will forever hold a place in hearts of citizens of Venice. Through the cruel act of jealousy and selfishness, Desdemona was taken by the man she loves, her husband Othello.
The character Desdemona in William Shakespeare’s play Othello holds on to her dignified behavior until the very end, when her life is taken by her jealous husband, is indicative not only of her chaste mind, but also of her virtuous fortitude. Women of that time were largely seen mostly one of two extremes – either virtuous or licentious. Desdemona’s strength as a virtuous woman are clearly illustrated in two pivotal scenes in Shakespeare’s play: in her poise when confronted with her husband’s collapse of his gentlemanly facade; and in the dignified way she faces her own demise head-on, feeble on affirmations, yet overflowing with grace.
Othello is a play that asks us to examine the position of women in society. This play explores issues such as clandestine marriage, accusations of adultery, and it includes three different social classes of women. As the details of her recent marriage to Othello unfold, Desdemona appears to be a woman driven by emotions. She marries a man because he has shared his stories of grand adventure. In order to do so, she elopes from her loving father’s house in the middle of the night. These seem like actions of emotion stemming from her love – or possibly infatuation – for Othello. Contradictory to this, when asked to speak about her willingness to enter the marriage, she responds with a very clear and sensible reason for staying with Othello:
Othello is a man of romantic nature. He fell in love with the beautiful Desdemona. He was accused of stealing her away from her father. Othello was of a different race and did not fit in with her family. Othello makes a plea for Desdemona and tells his story which wooed her to begin with. Othello tells of the love that her father showed him since his boyish days. This was like a match made in heaven that overcame many obstacles which got in their way. Othello could not understand why he was good enough to work and fight alongside of her father, but was not good enough for his daughter.
Within Shakespeare’s Othello there is an analysis into the context of the female. Brabantio’s rhyming couplet “Look to her, Moor, If thou hast eyes to see/ She has deceived her father, and may thee,” demonstrates his domineering and patronising attitude, as the Elizabethan era was a patriarchal society and the role of the female was to be ‘obedient’ to their father or husband. Brabantio also endeavours into placing a seed of doubt in Othello’s mind as a result of his jealousy. Consequentially Brabantio objectifies Desdemona when he states, “Where has thou stow’d my daughter?” exemplifying how he deems her as a possession, which can be stolen like any other. Othello prolongs this objectification through asserting that he “won his daughter” portraying Desdemona as a prize to be won, and a possession to be owned and argued over by husband and father. The true test of strength in a person is marriage. Throughout the play Othello, Desdemona is regarded as a strong, independent woman with a sharp tongue and the ability to stand up for herself. She defies the stereotypical mold of a wife during the 17th century, and is not merely an obedient servant of Othello, but a strong life partner with her own ideas and personality. Her passionate, yet rushed relationship to the Moor, Othello, gives readers the opportunity to discover whether or not Desdemona’s strength allows her to achieve her superobjective in the entire play: to maintain a happy, loving relationship with her husband, or if her strength becomes a hindrance.

In Greek, Desdemona means ‘the unfortunate’, perhaps reflecting an ideology that she is not meant to be liked, merely pitied for her misfortune as a tragic victim (commonly defined as someone who dies due to the faults of others). Throughout Othello, Desdemona is presented as pure and innocent – in regards to this, Auden’s comment is unusual as Desdemona is seldom criticised; indeed many critics are complementary, giving her titles such as ‘gentle Desdemona’.
Othello portrays a man out of his element: he is of a different race than his companions and is not in his homeland. Therefore, he has no family with him. Desdemona becomes his family through marriage. She explains this transition with, “But here’s my husband,/And so much duty as my mother stowed/To you, preferring you before her father,/ So much I challenge that I may profess/Due to the Moor my Lord” (1.3.184-188). Desdemona describes the process by which her mother became her father’s family to show how she now has allegiance to Othello over her father. Since she is his only family in a strange world, Othello should trust his wife. Early in the play he even says, “My life upon her faith” (1.3.293), meaning that his own well-being rests upon her honestly. When he doubts her, he betrays their bond of love; he kills her, bringing tragedy to the society. Then, to return order, he kills himself. In many of his plays, Shakespeare demonstrates ideas of gender and racial stereotypes. Othello, a play in which characters are judged based on sex and appearance, is an example of these stereotypes. Othello’s non-white ethnic background provides a platform for racial conflict. The characters of Desdemona and Emilia allow for sexism and gender conflict. These themes of Othello are closely related because of the similar prejudice and stereotypes. The sexism and racism in Othello allow for racist tones and ethnic conflicts.
“She loved me for the dangers I had past/ And I loved her that she did pity them” (1.3.166-167). Othello sees her as this innocent, inexperienced woman that shows compassion towards him, when he believes that he doesn’t deserve it. Desdemona’s perception of herself is that she’s a loving and faithful wife, and she even wonders how any wife could cheat on her husband, reaffirming her naiveté. “It is Desdemona’s absent sense of strangeness that gives Iago his destructive opportunity” (Hollindale).
In Othello, the evil villain Iago, tricks Othello into thinking his wife is having an affair with someone else. Iago hates Othello with a passion simply because he over looked him in a promotion and chose someone else instead. Othello becomes so enthralled in his jealousy that he ends up killing his wife, Desdemona. Desdemona was pure and she always remained firm in her loyalty and devotion to Othello. Even when she knew she was about to die she remained strong, “I never did offend you in my life; never loved Cassio but with such general warranty of heaven as I might love” (Othello). Iago’s wife, Emilie, died as well by the hands of her husband. She told Othello the truth about what her husband did and that Desdemona was innocent. Because of this, her husband killed her.
